There are the sounds of a small amount of static after Mary answers, then John speaks sounding tired and yes, even apologetic, in that way that says he's sorry but can't say it right now.

"... still angry with me?"

	There is a moment's pause, as Mary tries to decide between yes and no, and finally she speaks, sounding tired and unmistakably sad. "I'm not mad at you, John, I'm just scared about you and the boys...all of the boys." (Reply to this) (Thread)

Mary listens intently to the conversation in the background, trying to figure out what's going on, before she speaks

"I meant what I said, John. Dean is doing a good job with that boy, and no one could do better. It's not Dean's fault for not being sterner, or yours either for that matter. I don't want you turning into some kind of a hardass and shutting us all out to try to give the boys discipline or keep everyone alive or some nonsense like that. It won't make a bit of difference and it will just push us all away."

	More talking in the background, John bringing up both Bobby and Claire's names before the truck door opens, he says something about a half hour and then the truck door closes and he clears his throat. Mary is quiet, listening again to the noise in the background, and when he speaks again Mary sighs, knowing he's right

"I know you didn't, and I'm sorry, I just get a bit like a Mama bear where the boys are concerned. I just know how he is. If you start saying you have to be tougher to make sure this doesn't happen again, Dean's gonna think that's how he needs to parent this boy, and we both know that's not the case. You know how much he looks up to you, John Winchester. "

The sounds of rustling as Mary lays down on John's side of the bed

"I know...but forcing yourself to be the man you were a few years ago won't make us any safer. Nothing's a sure bet, John, and we'd rather live with you being the way you were the last few months than the way I've heard others talk about you on that stupid show. I'm proud of the way you've been acting with the boys, Ben, with everyone since I got here."

Mary makes a frustrated groan, knowing that he's just latching on to the one part of her argument he can find fault with, and she sounds mildly snappish

I was home alone a few times when it was on...can you blame me for being curious about what happened to you and the boys when I was gone?

Mary pauses, and, after she takes a calming breath, she continues in a calmer tone.

You know I'm right though, John, that's why you're focusing on the one thing you can find fault with.

The sound of the truck roaring to life followed by a long not-silence before he speaks again because he knows that she knows she's on to him.

"So maybe I am. But what am I supposed to do, Mary?" An unhappy sound. "Sammy thinks I'm crazy for ever agreeing to that possession, and maybe I am because I sure as hell wouldn't have agreed to it before I died. But I was trying to be a better father, be there for him when he needed it, keep civilians out of it."

The sound of his fists thumping on the steering wheel. "Then when I raised a damn objection to Ruby hop skipping around bodies, I'm still not doing what he thinks I should. I can't win with this kid, except to be the guy he expects me to be and let him argue with me until he's blue in the face. But it kept him alive all these years, alive and not stolen by demons like Ben's had happen to him."

More soft rustling as Mary curls her arms around John's pillow, like she's hugging him

"This is still a lot for Sam to get used to, John, but that doesn't mean he wants you to go back to the way you were. What you did for him, agreeing to be possessed, it showed that you believed in him, and there are probably still going to be times when that foolish boy of ours has to pinch himself to figure out that we're here, and here for him, but that doesn't change that he likes that we are. Just don't change, John. We all love you just as you are."

A small pause.

"Are you headed home?"
