"We're going through this stuff like it's going out of style," John announced, the tray with a fresh bowl of popcorn preceding him through the den doorway. On appearances, it was a normal sort of night, then squirreled away in the den, him having to make a new batch of popcorn halfway through, but it wasn't actually normal. These last few days – nearly this last week – hadn't been easy. The latter part had been full of the kinds of things that didn't even happen in the movies, they were just that crazy, and his eventual coping mechanism was to make things as normal as possible until he could finally really deal with all of it. After dropping the tray onto the coffeetable, he turned to look at Ruby. "You're looking a little peaked," he said, and while the statement was critical, his tone was anything but that. He was worried, more worried about her that he'd ever been, and because he couldn't do anything to make this better for her, it was just that much worse. She was his daughter, it was his job to protect her. He didn't care what anyone said to the contrary, she was his daughter. He knew his own heart, goddammit. "Here, why don't you cover up more?" Though phrased as a question, John was already tucking a blanket around her shoulders, fitting the material around her tightly, when the headache-like pain hit like he'd been smacked in the head. Releasing the blanket with a groan, he grabbed his head. |
