Twirling the stem of the champagne glass, Sarah eyed the model moving down the small catwalk and repressed a sigh. One would think that a private fashion show of pretty clothing would pull a genuine smile out of anyone even the least bit girly, but out of the last five designs, at least two had made Sarah wince inwardly. This was fashion? She wanted to be able to walk down carpets, not bunny hop or slither. Setting the glass down, Sarah cast a glance around before returning her attention to the runway. The designer's shop was empty of anyone besides the models, the designer, her staff, Paige and Sarah herself, and Sarah preferred it that way. It was spot of peace in what would be a busy, noisy day between promotional shooting, script meetings and multiple other things that she could barely recall. Not that she had to recall them, that was one of the reasons why she'd hired Paige long ago, to be her memory when her brain was packed to overload with lines and blocking and other assorted flotsam and jetsam of her profession. Designs number six, seven and eight came along, and were definitely promising, though Sarah thought at least one of the three would suit Paige far better – something to keep in mind after this was over – but the design of number nine was one she could no longer be silent for. "That's ugly," she murmured, lips barely moving to displace the perfected smile of interest and approval, the sound going only far enough to reach her assistant. "That's horrifically ugly, right?" The words were carried on the usual tone, conspiratorial as one would be with a friend, but with that gloss to it that somehow still defined a small, invisible line between employer and employee. It was something Sarah had never consciously been aware of doing, and as no one had ever dared to point it out, it continued. In Sarah's mind, Paige was the closet she might ever come to having a 'close' friend. She was one of the only people Sarah could trust and she would, quite frankly, be entirely lost without the other woman making certain that everything ran smoothly and any bumps in the road were quickly dealt with. |
