Entry tags:ben braeden, claire bennet (future), dean winchester, mirta gev, sam anders

WHO: OPEN to anyone who is a friend of Mirta & Sam, female OR male, since this isn't a "girly baby shower".
WHERE: the Lux
WHEN: Monday, October 23, 2006; afternoon [backdated]
WHAT: Non-traditional baby shower for soon-to-arrive baby!Ailyn.
RATING: TBD
STATUS: thread; in-progress
NOTES: Mini-threads, please and thank you, especially if your character is gifting something to Mirta/Sam/the baby, that way threads don't drag!

"I dunno, Claire, this still looks girly," he said dubiously as he dug through one of the boxes he'd been instructed to bring in, looking for the decorations Claire had asked him to pass to his dad, who was perched on a ladder on the stage. "Are you sure this isn't gonna be a chick fest?"

Actually, it didn't seem to be very girly, given that what decorations there were, like tablecloths, paperware and whatnot, all had a distinct weapon-like – or actually weapon reproduction – feel to it, but it was still a baby shower. Ben had heard the horrors that baby showers involved, like blindfold taste-testing of baby food or wrapping toilet-paper around the pregnant woman or other crazy weird things like that. Claire seemed to be avoiding most of that, however, in favor of using a lot of Mandalorian stuff, including the actual language.

"Aliit ori'shya tal'din." Ben stumbled over the foreign words, as he had several times the past few weeks when wandering through the dining room at the house to see what she or she and Ailyn had been up to. "What's it mean again?"

"Family is more than bloodline," Claire answered as she pulled back out of the largest box. A lot of the decorations were more Mandolorian than anything else, true, but Claire had thought the sentiment was appropriate for celebrating Ailyn, given that her future family was comprised of more than just blood relatives. Really, it was a sentiment most of those brought to Los Angeles, or born here later, had learned or would learn over their time.

"And I swear it won't be," she said when she turned back to face the stage, noticed the dubious look on his face and recalled his complaint moments ago. "It's just a party, like a birthday or holiday or something, only this is about a baby and a new family that's being made."

It hadn't taken long to rearrange this end of the ground-level bar to make use of the stage and a few tables that weren't booths, which was good, because they didn't have long. There was more space upstairs in the restaurant, but this wasn't going to be a fancy party at all, and there were fewer tables and surfaces in the downstairs dance club. Plus, the stage would be there if anyone decided to be silly.

"We don't have much time left, guys, so let's hurry up," she said, snapping out a tablecloth so she could place the cake, cookies, miniature pies – yes, with Dean and Ben in mind – and other desserts on it and move on to the main food table. She'd even, with Ailyn and Mary's help and a good deal of trial and error, managed to create a few desserts (and other food, to go with the rest of the 'lunch buffet' type fare) that were Earth-ingredients best formation of foods Mirta and Sam would have known from home. Claire was especially proud of the uj'alayi, even if the syrup was still maple syrup at its base.

The small tiered cake, however, was the part she was most fond of, in terms of food, as aspects of the artwork she'd had made for one of the presents (Sam's patch and the circular Ke barjurir gar'ade jagyc'ade kot'la a dalyc'ade kotla'shya.) had also proven to be a great design for the cake when used as separate (the saying iced around the round tiers) and combined (the whole design on the top tier of the cake) elements. Aspects like these – the cake, decorations and so on – had been "shower standard" ones that she had kept, but altered so this was more party than Earth-tradition baby shower.

Rather than set aside some group opening thing, Claire just encouraged everyone to pass their own gifts to Mirta and Sam whenever. Some would likely be opened later, like the gifts from people not there (John and Mary, for example), but the others could be done now. It was why Claire slid into a seat next to Mirta and Sam with two boxes in hand.

"Mirta can open this one, which is from all of us," she said, passing Mirta the large box, a present from Claire, Dean and Ben, that contained a plush purple blanket with the artwork Claire was so proud of – that replica of Sam's patch with Ke barjurir gar'ade jagyc'ade kot'la a dalyc'ade kotla'shya. worked in a circle around it – embroidered on it in a dark, almost black, purple thread. "And you can open this, which is from me," she said, passing a smaller box to Sam. Ailyn really had been a fountain of information that Claire likely would have had to get from Mirta in a sneaky way otherwise, which had lead to Claire snatching up another saying to run with in gift form.

As gifts went, it wasn't hugely expensive, but it was classic Clare in the form of a t-shirt with the saying Gar taldin ni jaonyc; gar sa buir, ori'wadaas'la. printed on it. 'Nobody cares who your father was, only the father you'll be.' She kind of hoped Sam wouldn't recognize all of the words so Mirta could be the one to translate it for him.

Mirta hadn't been expecting this, Gifts and food and good company just because in a few days she'd spend some time in agony and wind up with possibly the greatest child ever to grace this planet. Kriff, the universe. She sipped at a non alcoholic fruit cocktail someone had handed her and started to unwrap the gift.

When she saw the blanket colour she grinned. "Purple..this must start it" she joked before she unfolded it to see the artwork, so very much Sam and what he had been, what he had known andthen the embroridered words.

Mando'a words. "Train your sons to be strong but your daughters to be stronger" she translated for those who didn't know. "Claire, I don't know what to say, this is beautiful. Something to be treasured, and we will. All three of us"

She gave the other woman a quick hug, nothing too sappy or anything just a show of gratitude before resting the blanket on her lap and turning to see what Sam had gotten.

It all had to make Sam wonder just how sneaky Ailyn had been when she'd been here. Sure, he'd known about the planned baby shower, but some of these details were a surprise even to him. Definitely a surprise he approved of.

He watched Mirta unwrap the blanket, grinning as he saw the color choice before his jaw dropped slightly at the artwork on it. "That's amazing," he slipped one arm around Mirta's shoulders in a half hug as he looked at Claire. "Thank you." Mandalorians had several sayings, but that one had to be one of his favorites. And judging by the teenager who had recently been here, they had definitely lived by it.

He opened his own parcel, feeling actually excited by the whole thing. Baby showers were traditionally for mothers, as best as he could tell, so getting something himself was fun.

"Gar taldin ni jaonyc; gar sa buir, ori'wadaas'la," he read aloud from the t-shirt, his pronunciation considerably better than it had been a few months ago, even if he still lacked the perfect accent that Mirta had. He recognized some of the words, like 'cares' and he was familiar enough with the language to understand the tense changes, past tense for the first part and future tense for the second. But the rest was a mystery to him as he glanced at Mirta with a smirk. "Want to translate for me?"

Mirta stared at the T Shirt for a few moments in some level of awe. Claire had actually gotten that translation. "Alright either you've got a new power to absorb alien language and culture perfectly overnight or there was a future hand in all this" she joked, resting a hand on her stomach.

She grinned at Claire impressed with the choice before turning back to Sam.

"It says...Nobody cares who your father was, only the father you'll be"

Truer words never spoken for the Cylon father of her daughter. And Claire and Dean and Ben had gone to all this trouble for her. She was once again veering dangerously close to soppy. This would have to be remedied.

"Hey boys, you try the uj'alayi yet?" she asked but did grab Sam's hand under the table. That T Shirt said all she wanted to right now.

Dean Winchester wasn't big on baby showers. Until recently he hadn't been big on babies either, or kids. However, meeting Ben had made him see that some kids were pretty cool, and meeting Natalie, and the knowledge of the children to come for him and his friends had actually left him looking forward to babies. Baby showers, however, were mostly for women. They were too pink and frilly and they had weird games that Dean didn't understand. However, even Dean had to admit this one was turning out to be pretty good. There was a lot of good food, and friends and no lame games...all in all it was pretty good.

Dean looked up at Mirta's question, though it took him a minute to answer since his mouth was full of an entire mini pie. "Nnnnyah." Dean said, his mouth only half full now. He took a drink to wash down the rest of the pie and tried again. "Not yet. Is it any good?"

At Dean's question, which had followed closely behind Mirta's that Ben had intended to answer, Ben nodded eagerly and held up the plate with the mostly demolished portion of his uj'alayi. Mostly demolished, but far from small to begin with.

"Ehssmmm," he mumbled, mouth just as full as his father's but with the food in question. Given its sticky base, it was much harder to swallow so he could speak without a full mouth, but he tried valiantly and succeeded after a long swig of his beverage.

"It's awesome," he said, pronunciation far more distinct this time, as he guessed that they probably hadn't understood stuffed face speak very well. "Can I take whatever's left home?"

As the presents were unwrapped and reactions were had, Claire's pleasure with all of this grew. From the hug, which was notable not for being overly sappy or gratuitous, but because it was a rare, privileged gift from then fiercely proud and 'tough' Mando woman, to the way Dean and Ben were clearly enjoying their food (which was normal, yes, but still pleasing), it was just playing out as a wonderful day. She just hoped that the pleasure she was getting from it was being met or matched by other's feelings about the party.

Laughing almost soundlessly at Dean, then outright laughing at Ben, Claire stood up from the table.

"The way you're both going, there won't be any left at all," she said as she began to clear the discarded wrapping paper from the table to make room for either more eating or more gifts.

"Do you want anything?" she asked, the question primarily for the mother-to-be, but also encompassing Sam as her gaze moved from Mirta to Sam. "Mary and John sent over gifts too, but you don't have to open them right now."
