Jakob was laying on a chair, with the young Damien holding him. They'd watched movies earlier. Damien had been talking to him afterward.. then it was like talking to himself, because the boy drifted off to sleep. And Damien didn't move him. They just stayed here, himself sleeping, as his youthful father watched him, held him. But then his eyes slowly opened. He felt something. He looked up at him immediately. "Dad?? What.."
Damien was very concerned. "You're okay... I'm still here. What's wrong? I know you don't get sick.. so what is..."
Jakob sat up with him in the seat. "I.. I think..." It then became clear to him now. "It's time. I'm really going back."
"No." Damien looked surprised. He knew this was coming. And yet he didn't want it. Too soon, always feels too soon.. and he'd just gotten to know him, he wanted more. He held tightly. "No.. no, they can't! Not now!!"
Jakob simply nodded, looking at him, concerned, and his eyes felt water. "I know. I know, but there's nothing.. it's.. it's just how it is. I wish I'd come sooner." He could hear the protest, the emotion in his father's voice. "I don't.. it'll be okay." He felt at peace. "It will all be okay.."
The other man, the older one, came in. He had an odd smile. "Yes.. it will be. Jake. Jake, I'm sorry I wasn't there in time." He stared at his young self then. "You make sure. You help him. Save him! Change his fate. I can't, it's too late in my time. Either keep your family safe or don't have one at all. Remember.. I'm you."
Damien looked up at him. He wished he could feel something about himself going away. But the man had been a sort of jerk most of the time, hadn't contacted him when he arrived, played stupid games. He'd shared the future, but it was not how he wanted, not so fast. The man was cold, distant. He'd accepted Jakob here, but had not tried to be as close. Damien shook his head, covering his son's ears. "I'll do whatever it takes. I will.. but I will never be like you."
The older man just stood there. Then he nodded, and gave a shrug. "I guess we'll just have to wait and see about that."
Damien removed his hands. "Yes, we will."
Jakob gasped. "It's closer! It is, I'm.. I need to send a last message." He saw the laptop on the coffee table.
The older Damien, he went over to Jakob and set a hand on his shoulder.
Damien put a hand on it, quickly making it go to the boards. "Hurry.. I won't go."
Jakob typed fast, frantically, typing fast as the machine was on his lap. He could feel it even more. He knew there wasn't much left. He swiftly turned to the young Damien. "I'm going. I know you don't want me to. But I'll be okay." Though in the back of his mind, deep in the subconscious, he hoped it would be. "I love you, Dad. Both of you."
Damien held him close, close in an embrace, savoring each feeling for as long as possible. He noticed his other self's hand on the boy too. "I love you too.. more than anything. Maybe if I'm still hugging, I'll go with you?"
The other Damien shook his head. He knew this. "No. Isn't how it works.. only us. Only ourselves, our clothes, whatever we carry."
"Damn.." Damien still held the boy, cradling him close. "Remember what I taught you. The Powers could return you to the house instead of.. where you were, maybe a day after. But if not? If you're faced with that thing. Use your gift if you need to, fight, fight hard, unleash more than you ever did. Someday, you'll have a choice.. know this much, that you have a choice of which side you go. Destroy that thing.. or run. If you show up in the sewer, hide out until the next day. I'll do what I can to make sure myself or a patrol is there for you."
"I will, Dad. I promise," Jakob said softly. "It will be fine. I'll see you. I liked being here with you.." He stopped, feeling it. He quickly sent the post, feeling the tug, the pull from time. "Now. Ohh, it's definitely now.."
Damien held on. "I know. I know, son. Never forget that I love you and will do anything-" He stopped feeling emptiness a few seconds later. It was just him in the chair. Him, and him alone. He looked up then. His older self was gone. His son Jakob was gone. Damien was alone in once again. He sighed, standing up, looking at the laptop post, looking at the chair, at the new photos on the table. He felt that feeling again, that tightness in his chest. He looked at his hands, that held his son a moment ago. He was at a loss now. He liked this here. He had a hint of what the future, a possible future, held for him. And he knew this was temporary.. though it didn't change how he felt about wanting to keep him. He sighed, pacing around the room. He had to think about what to do next.. he had to remain calm.
