Possibly the most surreal few days of Faith's life. This whole futures thing was a whole new level of weird, even for LA. She had to admit that hearing about a future where she had a son was only a little bit less scary than the ones where she died. Though she'd figured one thing out, Michael clearly existed in more than one timeline if the comments from the other children were anything to go by. Faith honestly wasn't sure if that made things more terrifying or somewhat comforting.

Still, he was here and that meant he needed protecting, regardless of what might or might not happen in the future. There were still the ever present dangers of LA, not to mention Sylar's arrival. Faith was worried about Claire and how she was dealing, though she tried not to let it show through, keeping her focus on Michael.

"Your dad won't be long," she offered a smile to Michael as she opened the fridge on a quest for some kind of soda. "He's just on his way back and he may even be less cranky when he comes back."

She wasn't sure how or why, but she felt a flare of protectiveness towards the kid, more than she normally felt for the people around her. Maybe it was a maternal instinct she'd never thought she'd had before. And though it felt weird to refer to Sam as a dad, she just wasn't sure how else to call him.

Finally finding some lemonade, she poured out a couple of glasses and was about to hand one to Michael when she hesitated with a faint frown. "Wait, do you even like lemonade?"

Michael was seated at the kitchen table, practically perched on the edge of his seat as he swung his legs back and forth nervously and watched his mother at work. It was extraordinarily astounding seeing her this way. So much younger, clearly without a doubt about how to properly handle him, and yet she was also the same person all at once. He twisted his mouth to the side and blew a puff of air up to blow his bangs out of his eyes, hands nervously wringing together along the top of the table. He didn't know what he was doing here. He wasn't really even supposed to be here. Jeez, if Mom hadn't have been kidnapped in the future right now, she'd be searching the city high and low for him. He actually preferred her panic to the situation she was in now.

"I like lemonade," Michael verified, smiling up at her in amusement. "Tea is okay, sometimes you let me sneak coffee, and I think that orange soda is way underrated."

He took the glass from her and drank down a swig to press the point. "Thanks, M -" He cut himself off in time. Michael still didn't know if that was appropriate or not. He called her it over the boards, but in person it was sort of confusing. "How come you're less cranky than he is?"

Faith wasn't entirely sure if 12 year olds were supposed to sneak coffee, but she supposed there were far worse things out there and Michael didn't look like he was some kinda hyperactive kid as a result. In fact he looked almost uncannily like his father, especially the eyes. She was willing to bet that her older self ended up giving in a lot when those puppy eyes were turned on her.

"Good," she commented to the confirmation of lemonade approval and smirked slightly, feeling tea was a little less than 'okay'. He'd possibly gotten that from her.

She noticed the cut off when he spoke and she could almost guess what he'd been about to call her. Mom. It was weird and terrifying and kinda nice too, to be called that over the boards. But she was still aware she really was not his mother, not the one who had lectured him or hugged him. She was just the younger version of that woman.

"It's been a difficult year in general for him," she replied after a while, deciding she might as well go for some honesty. "And he was getting settled again and now you're here. It's confused him and you probably know how he likes to cover his confused with appearing cranky." And god, she hoped that didn't come across like Sam was angry with Michael or anything. "I promise, it's nothing you've done, sweetheart." She shrugged with half a smile. "And me, I figure no matter how strange it is, none of this is your fault. So it's up to me to look after you."

"Oh." Michael poked at his glass, a gesture that clearly indicated that he was merely looking for something to do with his hands. "I guess I sorta thought you'd both be really weird about it. Me being here." He shrugged. "Dad's fitting the bill - I can always predict what he's gonna do - but you're...less so? That's usually not how it's supposed to be." Michael knew his parents. Now he was thrown and baffled. They were younger, they were different. Dad had reacted badly. Michael had seen him do that a few times before at home, so that wasn't all too shocking. Except he was usually a lot better about it. Michael didn't even think that he and his father to be had endured a full length conversation since he'd gotten here. But Mom...well, he had expected bad stuff too. Not because she was like that in the future, but because he figured she'd be just as freaked about it as Dad was. That didn't seem to be coming off as strongly.

He actually preferred it that way.

"I'm glad you're looking out for me," Michael said, poking at his glass yet again, "but I don't want you to feel like you've gotta. I can go hang out with Ben and the others if it's too weird. We could maybe get a motel room and stay up and watch TV all night. It'd be all right."

"I guess even future me's unpredictable huh?" Faith smiled slightly before she pulled out the chair next to Michael, sitting down and pulling her left knee up to lean her chin on. "I'm feeling weird about it, don't get me wrong. I admit I got no idea what I'm doing here," she smirked almost ruefully. "But we'll figure something out and the most important thing is making sure you're okay." He was just a kid and the last thing Faith wanted to do was make him feel unwanted, even by past versions of his parents. No kid should ever have to feel like that. And if that meant mentally filing her freakout into 'deal with later' then she would.

"Besides, you seem like a really cool kid, it makes the weird easier," she flashed a quick grin before sipping at her lemonade.

"And you get the idea of a motel out of your head. I'm looking out for you because I want to, because you're family even if it is in the future. Even if you want to watch TV all night, you do not get to do it in some motel which isn't safe," she nodded firmly. "And besides, even if your dad and I didn't think so, just imagine for a moment what your grandfather would do if you suggested that to him."

John Winchester would freak out at the idea of his grandson camping in some motel room, when there was a home here for him. Faith knew it and had to hide her smirk at the idea of his reaction behind her glass. She glanced quickly at the kitchen clock, wondering how long it would be until Sam came home, hopefully with ice cream and maybe some reassurances himself that Michael wasn't a problem for him.

Sam was not entirely convinced that this was a good idea. He had taken his time milling around the frozen foods isle of the convenience store, pretending to be stuck on deciding between ice creams until he figured that it was high time to get a move on and meet up with the duo waiting back at home already. He was going to feel awkward and ridiculous the entire time, Sam already knew it, but he had promised himself that he was going to stiffen up and be an adult about all this. The kid needed help. He had been sort of scarce with playing the good guy lately, but as Sam was always speaking out and doing things on behalf of his family he knew that it certainly wasn't going to stop now. The kid was sort of family.

Sort of. Ha. He was his child. Would be. Possibly. The thought made his head hurt.

Toting a large paper grocery bag under his arm, Sam fumbled his way into the kitchen. He tried not to look too put off at the sight of Faith and Michael sitting at the kitchen table together. He could see bits and pieces of himself and the woman he had fallen in love with assembled onto that boy and it scared the living hell out of him.

"Got the ice cream," Sam announced, moving away from the spot he seemed to have momentarily frozen in at the door and over to the counter to unload the snacks and various household items that he had also stopped to pick up in case they were needed. "Uh...one is called 'Birthday Cake', while the other is the traditional chocolate and vanilla mix." Sam shoved his hands into his pockets and turned to look at the pair. Michael, in turn, shifted in his seat to eye him warily. Sam cleared his throat and shuffled from one foot to the other uncomfortably.

"I also got sprinkles and cones and ice cream stuff." Yes, listing his purchases was much easier than actually talking to the boy normally.

Faith tried not to be too noticeable when she breathed a sigh of relief when Sam turned up. Even though the meeting suggestion had been his idea, there was a small part of her wondering if he had chickened out and gone to hide at Jack's or something. Grateful that he was there, she flashed a quick grin in his direction.

"Hey," she got up from her chair and moved to help him put away the stuff, brushing a brief kiss over his cheek as she did.

"They actually make an ice cream flavor called 'Birthday Cake'?" She looked bemused at the idea as she glanced at the tub before she hesitated, turning back to look at Michael. "Wait, when's your birthday?" She just hoped it hadn't passed in the last couple of days. It wouldn't quite make her the worst potential mother ever, but it would make her a strong candidate.

"And you," she pointed at Sam. "Tell him that there is no way in hell he's staying at a motel. At all. He can stay where he's safe."

Sam leaned into the kiss at his cheek lightly, eyes briefly falling shut at the simple gesture. A little courage. He needed it. The tubs of ice cream hit the counter, along with a carton of milk, the rest of the ice cream supplies, cheese, yogurt - in short, a dozen various items from the dairy section he had been cooped into as he'd tried to procrastinate the past half hour. They probably didn't even need half of it, but it all had been fascinating enough at the time for Sam to stuff it into his cart as he wandered aimlessly.

"I guess so," was the simple reply to her ice cream related question. Sam swung the fridge open and started stuffing the items onto the shelves, still quite happy with the momentary distraction.

As Sam worked, Michael slid out of his chair and moved over to examine the ice cream cautiously. He still didn't appear to be so sure about his father, but he came off comfortable enough to stand side by side with Faith at the counter. "July." Michael squinted up at Faith with an amused smile. "I won't give you the day, 'cause that's always supposed to be a surprise."

Sam almost muttered something from the fridge, but he kept his mouth shut. Manners. This kid was real. He wasn't a demon trying to infiltrate their home. That much had been proven the second he had gotten through the front door.

"Yeah." Sam pushed the refrigerator door shut and finally forced himself to give Michael a glance that lasted more than point five seconds. "It's best that you stay here. There's space, food, protection. Plenty of people to keep you company." Sam folded his arms over his chest and nodded firmly. "You're better off here, Michael."

Michael, in turn, shot Faith an uncertain look. "You sure?"

Faith blinked at the huge amount of food Sam had bought, picking up a strawberry yogurt with an almost quizzical expression. She couldn't even remember the last time she'd eaten yogurt. For that matter she wasn't exactly sure if she liked the stuff all that much. Still, she glanced at Sam, guessing it had all been some sort of delaying tactic. She couldn't even say she blamed him for that.

"July, huh?" Well that was one relief straight away. Faith wasn't sure how long the kids would be staying in LA, but at least it gave her the best part of a year if he did end up staying. If. A big if. And she wasn't sure any more how she felt about the idea of the kids all being sent back, as much as she knew they had to be eventually. "Maybe I should start placing bets on which day."

It may have taken days, but finally Sam gave Michael a proper look and Faith relaxed as he backed her up on the motel thing. She gave Sam a grateful look before she focused on her son. "Of course we're sure. This is where your family is, it's where you belong. Besides, you go off to a motel, even with Ben, I'm gonna be worried about you all the time. At least here I know you're protected and actually getting decent food thanks to your grandmother. I bet Ben would let you get away with eating vending machine food all the time."

"That and playing ding dong ditch with the neighbors," Michael agreed. Ben was without a doubt one of the most awesome people in the world ever, but that didn't mean he was the most responsible in some ways. That didn't bother Michael; he liked it when Ben let him get away with stuff that most adults, his parents included, would not. It was thrilling. "I'd be worried about you guys all the time too, so it might be a good idea for me to stick around. But only if you're sure it's okay." Michael offered Sam another cautious look. He still wasn't so sure about where he was in all this.

"Ice cream," Sam started, "what flavor?" Ben voted on the cake. Sam turned to ask Faith the same question, only briefly interrupting her before she could answer afterward to, quite simply, give Michael a more stern expression. "We want you to stay. There's plenty of room. Now why don't you sit down while we get this ice cream together?"

Faith smirked, remembering playing ding dong ditch herself when she was his age before she reminded herself that just maybe she was supposed to be at least trying to be a good influence to the kid. "Exactly, I mean Ben is great, but staying here would be better for you. Besides, he should be staying here too," she shook her head with a soft smile. "I already told you, we're supposed to be the ones to worry about you, not the other way around."

She didn't miss the cautious look from Michael to Sam. It was hard, as much as she knew Sam was trying, and he really was, there was still a part of her wishing he could be more relaxed, try to make Michael feel better about the whole situation in all it's madness. Even if that was asking the impossible and she knew that.

As she agreed with the cake flavor choice, she leaned over, officially to grab a scoop from the drawer, but also so she could lean against Sam for a moment, kissing his cheek again. "Just breathe, you're doing fine," she whispered before she found what she'd been looking for and handed it to him. Ice cream, all of them. It almost felt like a family thing to do.

Offering him an encouraging smile, she moved back, sitting at the kitchen table as she grinned at Michael. "See, even he agrees. So that's settled. You're here as long as you need to be."

Sam scratched at the back of his neck and drew in an uneven breath. He could do this. He wouldn't freak out. He'd be an adult; an adult who was used to crazy supernatural, back to the future/present crap like this and he could - why did that kid look so much like them? Sam visibly flinched as Michael shot him a wide eyed, uncertain look. This was not normal. Or right. And it certainly wasn't what Sam had signed up for. Didn't the Powers or Wolfram & Hart or whoever know that he wasn't cut out for this parental stuff? Wasn't that why they took Heather away?

He forced a smile at the pair of them, appreciating the kiss that Faith delivered briefly before he set to work at preparing the ice cream.

"And I told you that family is 'sposed to take care of each other," Michael pointed out enthusiastically. It appeared to be a perspective he felt strongly on, merely judging from the determined look plastered across his tiny face. "Ben prolly thinks that he'd make the world explode if he stayed with us. He's weird like that." Weird, but awesome. Something in which Michael could never deny.

Michael still seemed to be a bit hesitant about his father, but he nodded at Faith's statement all the same. He'd come around, just like the others said. Dad just needed time. In fact, Michael was pretty sure that his mother did as well.

"Ice cream," Sam said, picking up the cones he had created from the counter and hauling them over to table. He handed Faith hers, then offered Michael his own. "There are sprinkles and stuff on the counter, too, if you want them." He didn't feel much like ice cream himself, so he settled into the chair closest to Faith - almost purposefully putting himself on the other side so that he wasn't too close to Michael - and clasped his hands together along the edge of the table. "So."

Michael hated awkward moments like that. Even though the ice cream was nice and temporarily distracting, he kicked at the base of the table with a foot and, after taking a lick, he squinted up at them both and said, "Does that mean I'll be living here with Uncle Dean and Grandpa and Grandma too?"

When Michael looked at her like that, with that determined look as he pointed out how family was supposed to be, Faith felt uncannily like she was looking at a mini version of Sam. The same bloody mindedness that her boyfriend had was currently plastered over her son's face. If she had had any doubts before over his paternity, they vanished in that instant.

"Guess I can't argue with that, huh," she smiled slightly. Families looked out for each other, especially the Winchester family. That was just how it worked. "Ben can be very strange, but I think we'll let him and Dean sort that one out between them," she smirked, not envying Claire trying to get in the middle of that.

She accepted her ice cream from Sam, licking at the cone as she watched the way Sam was, still so wary as he sat next to her. Under the table she shifted her foot until it was pressed against his leg, gently nudging him to try to get him to relax.

"So...." she echoed before she trailed off, really not sure what to say, and incredibly unsure about what Sam actually wanted from this. Luckily Michael opened with the first part, something she could actually mention.

"Yeah, they'll be here. And Claire a lot of the time. I'll be here as much as I can, even if I have to go off and patrol sometimes." She was still planning on being back here at night, sleeping with Sam as long as he wanted her to. She suspected that leaving him alone with Michael for any length of time might be too much of a headtrip for him.

"That's nothing new," Michael commented, flashing Faith a warm smile. "You do that stuff in the future too. Dad does, Uncle Dean does...it's kinda a family thing." Michael sometimes wondered if he was supposed to get into things the way that they did as well. He already had a set mind on making sure that he played his part in keeping his family safe from the monsters that were always giving them a hard time, why not go out and do all the rest? His father always went on and on about how he could be whoever and whatever he wanted to be if he tried hard enough, but Michael wasn't so sure on what he could be if he wasn't like everyone else. "I might when I'm older. Maybe."

Sam tensed at that, casting Faith a dark look. He didn't appear to be a fan of the idea of anyone that claimed to be his future child taking in the mindset of a hunting obligation. He didn't think he'd raise his kid to be that way. Not like the way his father had. He slid his hand under the table, palm coming to a rest at Faith's knee. He gave it a squeeze and bit back every last remark he had about the family business discussion.

"We should talk about what's going on here," he finally decided, believing it was more than a good time to get the ball rolling on the important matters; that being, of course, how all of this was going to work. "Starting with how this staying with us routine is going to work out. You're perfectly welcome to be here, Michael, but you've got to remember that this is a different time and there are things going on that you aren't used to. You have to be really careful about what you say to people, especially in regards to the future."

Faith felt an odd twist of emotions at that idea. On the one hand she couldn't deny that she was proud, way proud at the idea of a kid of hers kicking ass as well as his family could, saving people from the bad guys. But on the other hand, the mere concept terrified her. He could go out and get hurt, get killed by the nasties that went bump in the night. And then there was the part where she wondered if he felt obligated to get into the whole hunting lifestyle. She just hoped that he knew he was free to do anything he wanted.

She didn't miss the look from Sam and her hand slipped under the table to rest on his, her fingers curled around his hand as she needed to feel a connection to the man she loved. Who she apparently had a son with in the future.

"Maybe in the future," she smiled even if her comment was completely noncommittal. "But only if you want to and only after you've done your homework." There, that sounded appropriately motherly. Didn't it?

Sam was right of course, this whole situation was beyond weird. Faith suddenly realized she had no idea what things were like for Michael at home. Were her and Sam even living together? Was it at the house or somewhere else? God, did they get married or were they planning more kids or did they do crazy things like family dinners and-- Faith made herself stop thinking before her scary thoughts became too obvious to everyone else.

"Why don't we start by you telling us a bit about what you're used to," she began cautiously. "I mean stuff like how careful do you have to be with those message board filters in your time and how you all handle going out and whatever. Help us figure out how much different stuff we need to cover."

"There's always some bad guys out there messing with everyone," Michael explained, "so we're supposed to always filter to family and friends and people that we know aren't gonna try and hurt us. The security on the boards has gotten worse lately on account of you-know-who showing up and doing..." Michael bit his lip and lifted his shoulders into a momentarily gloomy shrug. "You know." Abducting his mother. Terrorizing their home and family. Michael picked at the edge of his half eaten cone and fell into a brief, but notable, silence. Then he looked across the table at the couple before him and added, "It's not so bad. I don't think it's much different than what you guys have got here. Maybe?"

Sam had heard bits and pieces about the Meg situation from others and Michael himself. He wasn't a fan and it showed as soon as his grip upon Faith's knee tightened a little. He felt her own fingers resting on top of his own, which proved to be a momentarily calming factor. He really, really did not like Meg, nor did he appear to be a fan of the idea of her coming along to harm those he loved. Again.

"I can go out in the neighborhood most times by myself, but anywhere else I've usually got to have you or Dad or Uncle Dean or Aunt Claire or Grandpa and Grandma. Ben too, sometimes."

At least he knew to be cautious, that much was a relief at least. Faith wasn't sure how the situation with Ruby was by Michael's time and really, she didn't actually want to ask. Ruby had promised them both that she would stay away from him and that would have to be enough.

"Okay, well that's a good start," she nodded slightly. The whole Meg thing wasn't something she really knew how to deal with. She'd heard a bit from Michael and some details about the bitch from John. She wanted to offer some kind of reassurance to the kid, tell him that future her would be fighting like all hell to get back to her family, but the truth was anything she said would just be hollow, meaningless. Her own fingers tightened around Sam's for a moment, trying to soothe him as much as she could as well.

"I mean there's a few people here you should avoid talking to, like Eve or Harmony or Sylar. A couple of vampires too." Though she was more than prepared to hunt down any of them if they even tried to talk to Michael.

"And I think right now you should always ask one of us to go anywhere with you. I know it probably seems like a total drag, but we don't know if Wolfram and Hart are gonna want to hurt you kids now you're here so we'll have to be extra careful, okay?" She glanced from Michael to Sam, wanting his opinion too, possibly to agree with her, possibly to tell her she was being just paranoid.

"Faith is right," Sam agreed, nodding. "We don't know why you're here or what could happen while you are and I don't wanna take any risks on it. If you want to go out and do something, you ask someone that is capable of taking care of you out there. And I mean honestly someone who can take care of you. If we say Ben, we're talking about the older version, not the young version who'd be likely to get you into even more trouble if he turned out to be your outing partner." Not that Ben was incapable, he was just a kid. So was Michael. Those two things in particular taken into account, it was obvious that he needed an adult to serve as his company out in the open right now.

"Do you think that's who brought us here? 'Cause, I was thinking, why would they? Doesn't it sound more like the Powers are behind all this?" Michael was questioning now. He couldn't help it, they were in a weird situation and that was what he felt like he had to do. "I don't think that the Wolfram & Hart people would wanna encourage some of you about decent futures and that's sorta what they're doing by bringing some of us along, isn't it?"

He looked at Faith, shrugging. "Okay. I'll remember those names for my filters. Eve, Harmony, Sylar."

Faith let out a slight sigh of relief, glad in a way that she wasn't just being paranoid. Sam was backing her up and that could only be a good thing. And pointing out something that she'd missed herself. "Good point, no trying to sneak around the rules by heading out with the mini Ben," she smirked. "I dread to think what the two of you could get up to." She was almost tempted to lay down some rules about Ben not going out alone either, but that was Dean's territory not hers and she suspected the older Winchester brother already had that more than covered.

And then there was the awkward question. How were they here? Why were they here? "I don't know," she answered honestly. "Maybe it was the Powers, to encourage us about some things, warn us about others. It does kinda feel like helping us." Or messing with them, distracting them all. Faith couldn't dismiss that idea either even if she didn't want to say it out loud. "But even so, Wolfram and Hart will try to take advantage now it's happened and that could put you all at risk. So we gotta take care of you."

"And we're gonna," Sam added, "we're going to make sure that nothing happens to you except a safe trip home when the time comes." If that time ever did come around. Sam feared that they'd be stuck in some weird reality where they already had their future child, then they'd end up putting themselves in the situation where said child would end up being born, in which they'd end up with two versions of the same child in the same place. One younger, one older. Also, Sam was creeping himself out with these thoughts about Faith possibly even getting pregnant. That came with the children territory, however. Even if it wasn't something he had thought too extensively into beyond that chat with Faith about being careful.

Oh god, they'd have to resort to magical methods as well. There had to be something that they could use that was stronger than the every day birth control...

"Okay." Michael took another bite out of his ice cream cone, still feeling a bit uncertain about things. He was actually pretty sure that he and a young Ben would get into a lot of trouble, so he wasn't going to argue there. But just like the two of them, Michael was confused about the hows and whens of the situation as well. He wanted to stay here, sort of. If only because his parents were safe. It was awkward and weird, but at least they were here. "What about school? What about that stuff?"

Sam looked over at Faith, clearly uncertain on an answer to that one. "We don't know how long you're gonna be here. Enrolling you in school only to have you go missing the next second would be a little...odd looking, don't you think?"

Going home. Michael would be going home at some point which was how things were meant to be. He had an actual mother back in his own time, one who was probably going frantic for her son if Faith knew herself at all. God, there was a future version of her who was a mother. An actual mother with the pregnancy and the labor pains and the weirdness and an infant! One who she apparently hadn't killed by mistake if the 12 year old sitting opposite her was any indication. That Faith deserved to have her son back.

Even if she herself would miss him like crazy.

"We'll keep you safe and then figure out from there," she emphasized. "We'll make sure you get home safely." No crazy attempts to send him back unless they were completely confident it would work. She wasn't risking him, not even to save Sam\s weirdness.

And he was being weird, probably thinking too much about something. Faith squeezed his hand a moment before the school thing came up. And she looked completely confused for a long moment. "I guess maybe Sarah?" She shrugged, having dropped out of education at pretty much Michael's age herself. "She teaches some of the kids, maybe she can help?"

"Sarah is a possibility." Sam didn't know her well. The only time he had really talked to her for an extended period of time was when he had tried to pull Ben out of school while he was dosed on demon blood. Sam fidgeted uncomfortably at the thought. "You should talk to her," Sam advised, shrugging, "since you're gonna be around the Hyperion." It was the safest situation he could think of at the moment for Michael. Ben went to school there, Michael could go with him and he'd be comfortable around the people that he knew. It was a decent plan.

"Aww, but I thought this was sort of, like, a vacation or something?" Micheal had been hoping to skip out on all the school stuff. He had already imagined himself slacking off, hanging out around the Winchester home, playing video games, eating ice cream, messing around with whatever guitar he could get his hands on...

"School is important," Sam told him sternly, "not many kids have had the chance to get explore a quality level of education, so -"

"- so, suck it up, deal with it, and you'll thank me when you're older. I know," Michael finished, rolling his eyes.

Sam sat back in his seat, mouth clamped shut. The kid...knew him pretty well, didn't he? Word for word, even. He suddenly felt even more uncomfortable.

Faith nodded, already planning on talking to Sarah the next time she went back to the Hyperion. Even if she spent most of her time at the Winchester house, at least while Michael was here, she still planned on doing her job and checking in at the Hyperion at least once a day. It wouldn't be too hard to grab a hold of Sarah and chat to her about some school stuff.

And then Michael actually finished one of Sam's sentences.

"Woah," Faith murmured under her breath, her gaze shifting from Sam to Michael and back again. "That was kinda cool." It was obvious that Michael had had this conversation more than once with his parents.

"So if I give you the speech about wishing I'd had those kinds of opportunities when I was your age, will you know all of those too?" She was smirking as she asked, even if under the table her thumb was brushing over Sam's hand, trying to calm him down as he sat back. It was freaky, one of those sudden reminders that this virtual stranger in front of them knew them both better than almost anyone in the world.

"It's just 'cause Dad gets a little predictable with his speeches sometimes," Michael commented, shrugging. Sam stared at him, looking flat out confused. "Don't worry," Michael assured him, smirking. "Mom's are too." He flashed his mother an even wider grin. "Sorry, but it's true. You guys mean well, but sometimes you gotta change it up a little. Be creative."

Sam was thinking of ways to be creative. It involved him hopping up from his chair and running out of the room as quickly as possible. He instead turned his hand over and latched onto Faith's, practically for dear life. The kid was cute and smart and funny, but he was also terrifying and Sam was really clearly very unsure as to what he wanted to do with him.

"You guys give me lots of opportunity," Michael confirmed, "I'm 'sposed to keep an open mind about a lot of things. It's hard, but I do it anyway."

Faith blinked before she laughed. As weird and freaky as it all was, she couldn't deny the funny side. "Well it's hard to be creative when we don't know what our future selves have already covered."

Though it was beyond disconcerting to hear Michael refer to them as Mom and Dad like that, even if he was technically talking about their future selves. As Sam turned his hand over, Faith gripped him back. There was a part of her that felt if she didn't have the tight hold on her hand she'd be convinced she was actually dreaming this whole thing.

"Well that's good. Because you should," Faith pointed out. "You seem like a really smart kid, you could do anything you wanted with your life."

"What she said." Sam awkwardly shifted in his chair, more than happy to agree with Faith on that statement. They knew little to nothing about their future selves, how was it to be expected that they would know what they had instructed their future child on? Future child. Future child. Sam raised a hand to the side of his head and rubbed at it slowly. Headache. This was giving him a headache.

"Right now I'm okay with going to school - sometimes - and hanging out with Grandpa and Uncle Dean and Ben. I figure I can come up with the rest later." Michael finished off his cone and leaned forward, his smaller figure looking so unusual to the man sitting opposite him. Sam just didn't get it. At all.

"So, uh, about the...name calling. Thing." Sam glanced over at Faith, looking more than unsure of himself on the next statement. He didn't want to offend anyone, but it was a realistic thing to bring up, wasn't it? And it was reasonable too. "Are you okay with being called that?" Because Sam didn't know if he was okay with being Dad. He was Sam. That was his name. He hadn't quite earned that title yet, even though at the same time Sam could understand why Michael was using it. He was used to it. Sam was not. It was confusing.

The ice cream was starting to melt onto Faith's fingers so she distracted herself from the conversation for a moment to lick at the cone, before all of the dessert was melted. It was a good distraction, a way to pause while she tried to process the idea. The idea of their future son who was awesome and terrified her. It was weird to think that at some point she might even become pregnant and have to deal with all of that, even if the result was a really cool kid.

A kid who seemed to be able to compromise in that way that only 12 year olds could, limiting school to 'sometimes' and turning chaperoning into 'hanging out'. Faith smirked slightly behind the ice cream cone before the name thing came up.

What to call them. Because she wasn't 'Mom', not really. She was 24 years old and had never changed a diaper in her life. "I, er..." she flailed slightly, not knowing how to even answer that. "Look," she spoke to Michael directly. "Call me whatever you feel comfortable calling me. I mean, I'm not her, future me or whatever so don't feel like you have to call me Mom, but if calling me Faith is too weird for you too, I can adapt and get used to it." Because he was just a kid and really, Faith would rather feel uncomfortable herself than make him feel too strange.

Sam had sort of been hoping that Faith would have been enthusiastic about the lack of parental titles. Her reluctant agreement to the name left him suddenly feeling like a clown standing in a crowd of mimes - out of place and incredibly foolish. "I'm not really..." He was not a father. He was not a Dad. Could he really take to being called either right now? "If you want, you can call me...that."

Michael watched the both of them, slightly amused at how awkward and uncomfortable they seemed to be at the idea of being dubbed his parents. It was one thing to know that they'd be them in the future, he supposed, but it was another to actually be given those titles by their future child. He kind of wanted to see how often he could say it to Dad now, if only to see what it required to make him explode.

Which was a little mean. But he did make funny faces.

...they both did, actually.

"I'll try not to call you names too often?" Michael could negotiate. Sort of. "'Cause Sam and Faith sounds kinda weird to me."

It was like standing in a whole mass of weird and awkward and not having any clue how to make things make sense for everyone. Faith didn't point out one slightly obvious fact, that even if Michael did call her 'Mom' there was a chance she wouldn't respond as she was so unused to it.

"Or you could always just say 'oi you' when you want our attention," she smirked before giving Michael a faintly amused look, one which said 'go easy on him'. It didn't escape her notice that she'd said those words to Sam earlier too. It was almost like trying to negotiate with two children.

There were so many questions she wanted to ask the kid, but was mildly terrified to. Not just about Meg but his world in general. She guessed that her and Sam were together, but any more than that was a mystery. And maybe that was how it was meant to be.

"We'll figure this out you know," she said, almost abruptly. "Not just the names thing but all of it, this, staying here, funky timeline things, all of it."

Sam didn't appear to be so confident about that statement, but he nodded in agreement nonetheless. "We'll work on it," he informed Michael. "I'll admit that I'm not handling this as well as I'd like to, but I promise I'm gonna be here if you need me." He looked to Faith, more than sure that she held that same particular mindset as him, at the very least. "We'll both be here for you. We are here for you." Their son. Their son. Together. Something that he and Faith had created. With that thought in mind, Sam didn't know who to be more wary of - the possible child that was waiting for them in the future or the woman he was holding hands with. He didn't want to knock her up. How would she slay if she was pregnant? How would she live? How would HE live?

"I know." Michael did. He knew his parents too well. Dad would be weird, Mom would be weird. They'd be pretty weird together. But they'd get through it. It was looking a lot better than his own time did, which was something that he was both grateful for and nervous about at the same time. He had to get back, for the sake of his family. If only this time traveling business could have happened when there wasn't a psychotic demon running around terrorizing everyone. What was up with that? "I'm not too happy 'bout all this weirdness, but it's okay. I get it, I promise." A lot of weird things happened in their lives. This was just another day. In another time.

"Just work with us here," Sam continued, "if you do that, we'll all be fine. Don't run off, don't do anything crazy, stick to the house unless you're with an adult, and we'll take care of the rest."

Faith squeezed Sam's hand slightly when he admitted that he wasn't handling it all in the best way. Really, she was proud of how well he was handling it. He could have run, hidden out at some bar, gone into complete denial that it was even happening. He was here and he was trying and that was the main thing as far as she was concerned. There were still so many unanswered questions attached to all of this, things she was afraid to know. She could guess that even as a mother she still patrolled but was it the same? Would she turn out like Nikki Wood, putting the calling in front of her own son? She hated the idea of dying in the line of duty like that, leaving Sam and Michael on their own, just as Robin had been left with Nikki's Watcher. She'd seen how much that had messed him up. But then equally the idea of giving up her life, even with all the dangers attached, was terrifying.

And that was before she even went into the fear of being a mother in the first place.

"We're here," she agreed with Sam's statement. "I mean we're family. A weird, time displaced family," she smirked ruefully. "So you need anything, then we're here to help you." She glanced at Sam, almost grinning. "Besides, if we weren't you just know future us would find a way to come back and yell and I do not want to end up having an argument with myself."

"I don't wanna have an argument with future you either," Sam chimed, "for the record. You're already scary enough as it is on your own." A slight smile cracked at that one, something that Michael himself couldn't help but grin at from across the table. That was better. Sort of.

Glancing between Faith and Michael, Sam slowly slid his hand away from Faith's and leaned in to, this time, give her a kiss on the cheek rather than the other way around. He probably would have kissed her right then, but Sam didn't want to violate any levels of potential kid rules as far as the parental kissing went. Safety first. "If anything, I can conclude that we should do all right here. You seem to be fairly cooperative and between Faith, myself, and the rest of the family we'll all deal with this situation accordingly. In the meantime..." Sam pushed his chair back and stood. "There's plenty of ice cream in the freeze. Or there will be, once I get it in there." On that note, he shuffled across the kitchen floor. Sam was actually feeling grateful for the opportunity to momentarily slip away from the table. As cooperative as Michael appeared to be, he still felt awkward about all of this and didn't want to spend more time than he felt able to with the kid. Not until he was ready. Maybe he'd invite him out to play basketball or something later. They must have done something like that together in the future, right? Sports. Father-son bonding. Sam was pretty glad his back had been turned at the thought, because his face twisted into a slight mask of confusion as he stooped down to scoop up the buckets of ice cream. Weird, weird thoughts indeed.

Glad that the conversation about rules and laws of the land or whatever was over, Michael looked back to Faith and smiled a bit. "I was talking to Ben about games earlier. Was he being serious when he said that Guitar Hero was the thing for right now? 'Cause that's a total classic where - I mean, when I'm from. You've got to special order those to even get them!"

Faith was almost sure she'd just been somehow insulted, though she actually felt almost proud at the idea that her scary levels were just that impressive. Impressive enough to get smiles from both of the boys. "Yeah, well, just imagine what two of me ganging up on you would be like," she retorted, though it was softened with a grin of her own.

The kiss made her smile grow wider, though just for once she wasn't tempted to grab Sam for a proper kiss. Maybe it was a sign of maturity or something, but she didn't quite want to traumatize Michael with too much parental kissing. Limits and all that, the poor kid was already having to deal with his parents being too young as it was. She watched Sam move off to deal with sorting out the freezer, trying not to smirk at the faintly formal choices of words like 'conclude' and 'accordingly'. He was trying and she appreciated it, probably more than Sam realized.

Her attention was drawn back to her son when he mentioned the Guitar Hero and she grinned easily, relieved to be on more relaxed grounds. "Oh yeah," she nodded. "We've got Guitar Hero. Though if anyone can beat Ben I'll be impressed. Sometimes I've even seen him playing Castiel and he beats the angel boy every time. Better than me too, although," she did look proud. "I have been known to kick his ass in Tekken." Yes, beating a kid at a Playstation game was something to be proud of in her world.
