Ben & Mirta & the ice cream :D

They really shouldn't have made it sound like a challenge. Ben thrived on accepting challenges, either directly worded or implied, and the joking between Claire and Sam had definitely sounded like the latter. Yeah, okay, pregnant women did seem kind of possessive of their favorite foods if his grandma was any indication, but that still hadn't been deterrent enough for Ben Braeden where ice cream was concerned.

Which was why he flopped down next to Mirta and her carefully guarded frozen desert – well, flopped in the figurative sense, in reality it was restrained sitting because he wasn't a douchebag who would crash down next to a woman carrying a baby and scramble her kid's brain. That just wasn't cool.

"Hey, babe," he said, wriggling his shoulders back into the sofa to get comfortable. What, she was! Being pregnant didn't make her less kick ass and hot.

Mirta raised an eyebrow when Ben flopped down next to her. She suspected motive. Small, pre teen motive. She took another bite of the cookie dough ice cream she held in her hand and smirked slightly focusing on the TV in front of them.

"Hi Ben" she said sweetly and took another bite as he pushed back into the sofa, getting comfortable.

"How've you been?"

She knew what the motive was.

Feigning interest in the movie before deciding that even feigned interest in a chick flick was just too much, Ben turned to look at Mirta. Well to look at her and inspect her ice cream flavor. Cookie dough. Yum. The person who had decided cookie dough and ice cream should go together was a genius, just behind the person who had invented pie and burgers.

"Pretty cool," he said, stretching casually. "Except not cool, cause it's California and it's hot. You know, like all day and sometimes at night too."

But ice cream was cool. Definitely.

"How 'bout you?" he asked, gaze dropping for a second to her stomach. In the look was a mixture of curiosity and childish wariness, as if some part of him expected her stomach to start doing some kind of weird contortions.

'Cool' was still a word that confused Mirta. Mostly cause it made no sense. Things that were cool were often warm. Or hot. And thereby how could they be cool. It was silly and annoyed her. But the kid didn't know that.

Course he didn't, he was too busy staring at her ice cream. Her. Icecream.

Kids in Keldabe would have found their own damn icecream, she sulked.

Still, he seemed like a good kid, a good kid that wanted to get his little kid hands all over her ice cream. But a good kid nonetheless. He was Dean's, which explained some of the persistance, and had Claire's influence which explained the rest.

When he looked at her stomach she grinned.

"Wanna feel it kick?" she asked. Its entirely gross, like its about to pop outta there through the skin or something. Sometimes you can see it"

True to her good friend word, not only had Claire brought Dean and Ben after they'd stuffed themselves at Tenel Ka and Jacen's reception, they'd gone out for snacks and such earlier in the day and arrived on Sam and Mirta's doorstep bearing the figurative fruits of their shopping labor. Of importance, at least to her two grumpy boys, was that the 'nicer' clothing worn for the hour they'd spent at the reception had been shed and all three were comfortably clad for an evening of distraction hidden beneath a planned, but still genuine, night of hanging out.

Claire was glad they'd come, as it was the first time in weeks she'd felt any measure of relaxation outside short moments at home. Things were a mess, but tonight they didn't feel like that so much at all.

"This movie is really good," she said, paused briefly to toss popcorn in her mouth, then continued once she'd swallowed. "I'm kinda shocked I've never seen it before."

Of course, the movie wasn't the real entertainment at the moment, it was what was happening elsewhere in the room, concerning Ben, Mirta and ice cream

Sam smirked before he leaned over, grabbing a handful of the popcorn himself. "I clearly haven't been on Earth long enough because I really don't get it," he eyed the screen with a dubious, if amused expression, trying to figure out what was actually going on with the characters on the screen. Something about a guy trying to figure out what to say to a girl, he wasn't exactly sure. But still, it was fun to just chill out with the good company.

And watch his heavily pregnant Mando girlfriend and a pretty awesome kid compete for the ice cream.

Angling his body slightly so neither Mirta or Ben could see, Sam pulled out $50, glancing at the others with a raised eyebrow and playful smirk, silently making the opening bet; that there was no way Ben was getting that ice cream away from Mirta. It may have been wrong to bet on such things, but frak it was amusing.

Pregnant women were notoriously possessive of their food, but as far as Dean was concerned, Mirta had nothing on his son. Ben was a growing boy, but more, he was Dean Winchester's kid, so food (especially sweets) were very dear to him. Ben was gonna get the ice cream, there was no doubt about that.

Dean looked at the offered $50, and drew out a $100 instead. After all, Ben had the will for the ice cream, yes, but he also had Dean Winchester's good looks and a big pair of pouting eyes and a helpless look that would leave Mirta's maternal instincts--anyone's maternal instincts--helpless but to give in. He looked to Claire, wondering whether she'd get in on the bet, and if she did, if she'd make the mistake of voting for Mirta instead of Ben.

Leaning forward, Claire discreetly slipped a $50 out of her pocket and laid it atop Dean's. She knew how strong-willed both sides of this ice cream situation were, but her money was on Ben because she'd been the recipient of that Winchester charm many times... and, of course, there were pregnant hormones at play here.

"What's not to get about the movie?" she asked conversationally, to cover up the silent betting going on. If Mirta caught win of the bet, she was pretty sure shoes would be thrown – either than, or Mirta would take all the money and none of them would be willing to stop her.

Sam raised his eyebrow and his smirk widened before he slipped his hand back into his pocket to bring out the cash to match the bet. It would be a battle of wills alright, and he had every faith in his girlfriend. Hormones had nothing to do with it, no one separated a Mandalorian from her things. Well, no one did it and survived, but even Sam had to admit, there was no way she'd go all bounty hunter on Ben.

"Earth dating rituals," he responded, disguising the way he put the money down by grabbing more money. "I mean why do they make it so complicated? I mean, look at them," he gestured at the screen. "They clearly like each other, so why are they putting all these distractions in the way, like what their friends think and all these rules to make a relationship work," he frowned, the amused confusion still showing through. "If they want to be together, why doesn't one of them just kiss the other already and be done with it?"

"Because it's a chick flick." Dean said. "If they just kissed all through the movie it would lead to more, and then midway through they'd be naked in the middle of the park going at it and that would be called 'porn...' which is more my kind of movie." The corners of Dean's lips turned up. It wasn't really polite conversation, but if Sam was going to make them sound like weirdos with words like 'earth dating rituals,' Dean could play up the freakiness.

"In the real world, Sam, the real EARTH world, dating rituals don't go like that. You go up to a girl you think is hot in a bar, you lay a pick up line on her she's never heard before with your most charming grin, and when you get really daring...then you go in for a kiss. You don't have to play around and sulk for days wondering whether they like you or not, you just have to do it." Feeling all too smug about his knowledge of how the dating world worked, Dean waited for his hunch on Ben's willpower and pouty eyes to pay off.
