Who: Heidi and Nathan Petrelli
What:Coping, sandwiches, the works
When:August 27 before this post
Where:The kitchen
Status:In Progress
Rating:Shouldn't be too high

It had been a rough couple of days for Heidi. The whole mess with the Scourge had everyone on edge, and after learning what happened to Claire and Dean, suddenly she was more afraid than ever for anyone out on patrol. When you added the intergroup fighting, the arguements and disagreements and hurt feelings that led to one of her daughters wanting to move out. Heidi was decidedly against ABC leaving, both because of the threat, and because she didn't want to lose the closeness, the feeling of family, they all had here.

In a brooding sort of mood, she went to the kitchen to try to find something to eat, only to see Nathan standing at the counter working on a sandwich. Technically it was safe, as there was nothing combustible or poisonous near him, but Nathan Petrelli wasn't known for his kitchen expertise. "Step away slowly, Petrelli, before anyone gets hurt."

Caution about Nathan in the kitchen was far from unfounded, but it was definitely a good thing in this situation despite only making a sandwich, as he was distracted and, admittedly, frustrated. By the Scourge situation, by the in-fighting that had lead to Claire being on the very of moving out, by Faith and her actions, attitude and choices following the one choice he had agreed with – getting the information they needed. Ever since Peter had been relieved of his duty, Nathan had questioned where his continued place was and the answer that was starting to form wasn't one he wanted to accept.

When Heidi walked in, she was a welcome diversion from his thoughts – but then she always was. Hands up, a smile almost playing about his lips, Nathan took two steps back from the counter.

"Do I need to keep my hands where you can see them?" he asked, cheeky the only way to describe his manner.

"Oh yes." Heidi said, a firm, commanding sort of tone clear in her voice. She walked up behind Nathan, and put a hand on his lower back. "You're a very dangerous person, and I've been warned about letting you in here alone." She lowered her voice to a brief, teasing whisper. "Don't make me frisk you."

She walked around him, seizing the sandwich and taking a large bite out of it. There were some foods even Nathan Petrelli couldn't ruin, and thankfully a sandwich was one of them, but to try to lighten the mood, and to bring a wider smile to Nathan's frustrated face, Heidi stumbled, falling against him. "Just as I thought."

Catching her easily, Nathan spun her so she was facing him, that almost-smile having grown into a brief chuckle. Her gift – maybe even her superpower of sorts – was knowing when to give what, whether it was teasing to counter strain or force of determination to bolster another's own or the calm in conflict, and she did it well.

"Is mouth-to-mouth resuscitation going to be necessary here?"

Not that this couldn't end with that innuendo leading them upstairs, but right now Nathan's mind was split too many ways to properly appreciate the bedrooms charms of his very lovely wife.

The brief chuckle was more than Heidi had hoped for, but even so she knew that not everything could be solved with kisses or other forms of sexual satisfaction. They needed to come up with some sort of game plan to deal with all of this...though selfishly she wished she could keep that smile and laughter there for much longer.

"Maybe." She said softly, leaning up to brush her lips briefly over his before she pulled back and put the sandwich back on the plate. "So what's going on down here, Nathan? Is there a reason you're down here threatening all of us with your cooking skills?"

"Something to do with my hands while I go over all of this again," Nathan said as he leaned against the counter. And it was an 'again' because he had been over some of it with her before, but it hadn't lead him to anything he could call any kind of good decision.

"What am I still doing here, Heidi?" he asked, sighing heavily. "Anything that I can't still do from somewhere else in the city?"

There were other concerns, other points, but that was one that Nathan was the mostly deeply stuck on. What was the point of staying while another daughter, one without another support network out there in the city, left this hotel? Even more, what was the point of staying despite that if he served no on-site purpose?
