WHO: Claire Squared!
WHERE: shopping mall; streets of L.A.
WHEN: Friday, August 18, 2006; late afternoon/early evening
WHAT: THEIR CERTAIN DOOM. Sort of.
RATING: TBD
STATUS: thread; in-progress!

Outside the Hyperion, Claire leaned against the Rogue and waited for her sister to come out. It wasn't the former issues she'd had with being in the Hyperion – those had become less and less over time, fading entirely with Gabriel's disappearance – that kept her outside, it was her current state of mind over where the lines were falling about solving the Scourge problem. The entire thing left her unhappy, wary and even a little angry, and while she knew that Castiel understood and agreed with many points, that Dean tried to understand it even if he didn't agree, there as one person who understood it best because she was feeling the same way.

Which was why Claire Squared was going shopping now that the work week was over. A chance to vent and a chance to be distracted. The perfect combination. And it was just shopping, so certainly nothing could go wrong with that, right?

The sound of a door clicking shut followed by footsteps heralded the younger Claire's arrival, and then she appeared at the gate that led out to the sidewalk. Tossing her a grin, Claire pulled open the passenger's side door, clearly intending to get in, and tossed her sister the keys.

"Your turn to drive." What, she knew how to share!

Claire needed out. Needed away from all the interrogation talk and everything else she hated about the hotel right now. It was wrong. She knew it was wrong what they were planning, just like what Dad had always done, for the greater good, for her. She'd needed a break and much as Spike's club was an escape there was one person who knew her better than anyone else. Who understand just how she was feeling.

And would let her drive!

She caught the keys and grinned climbing into the car and starting it up. a Rogue. She'd really only gotten to drive hers for a while.

"So aside from the stupid, how are you?"

She remembered her sister saying she needed to tell her something, whatever that was it was still on her mind. And she was gonna get it out of her.

"You know, being slowly driven crazy by Dean." Despite the statement, amused fondness was more than evident as Claire laid her head back against the seat headrest and looked over at her sister.

"I know I died. I know he's never going to be able to accept this piece of what we can do, dying and bouncing right back-" Not all the time, a little voice reminded her. But Alastair had been different. That had taught her the meaning of limits, just like broken syringes had done as well. But it hadn't reversed the nonchalance. "-and that's okay. He shouldn't. Normal people shouldn't blow off death like we can, especially Dean. But he's hugely overprotective and so is everyone else and it's – well, you know. Just ugh. We come back, that's the part I wish people'd remember."

Rolling her eyes, she pointed the detour around some construction out and then switched mental gears. "How're you? Working with Nathan, awesome or a pain?"

"Uh huh, and like you'd change a second of it" she joked, pulling out onto the road and driving toward the first mall they'd decided to hit. The first of many.

"Well, its not easy to see I guess. I mean remember how freaked out Zach would get every time we tried?. They don't get entirely how much we can come back from, and we keep coming back. Like you said, they should never be okay with it, so we have to let them have their freakout and hug us and be scared for us cause thats the normal reaction."

Much as it did drive her crazy. Its why she liked visiting Spike, he didn't seem to care bar what her and her inability to stay dead did to his profits.

"It mostly just shows he loves you. Like a whole lot. So I'd keep that in mind more than anything else"

As for working with Nathan, "Y'know, I like it, I'm getting to know him more than I ever did back home and its good, y'know"

"That's great, it really is," Claire said, and meant it. It wasn't the idea, knowing-your-parent-from-birth situation, and he'd never replace Noah, but it was awesome to get the chance. She still figured that her sister benefited from it more than she did, but Claire also knew that was her own fault, not Nathan's. The wounds of loss were still too fresh for her to react differently.

"This is a good place, even when it's horrible." She sighed softly. "Still, it would help if the horrible didn't start bleeding into the places and people it wasn't supposed to."

"I know you had a whole different thing after Kirby. But in my timeline, he was the one that stopped it, told me things didn't need to be set in stone and damn near killed himself to save the city."

She shook her head slightly "...Its good, getting to know him and Heidi and the boys, its nice. And I miss Dad and Mom and Lyle so much, but best of the situation and all that. Meant I got to know him better than I would have back home and meet you too, I never knew what it was like to have a sister"

SBC was right too, as it happened, that bleading into things,

"No but thats what it does, people get caught up in things. People get caught up in trying to do good and I don't know. I don't like where its all going. I really don't"

"Only because you told him that first," Claire said lightly, the words almost teasing despite the topic not really being entirely tease-worthy. Choices made, choices not made, destiny fulfilled, destiny denied. But there were only so many ways to blame oneself and now really wasn't the time. The comment about not knowing what it was like to have a sister was met with an understanding grin of shared feeling, one that made it clear that she thought the knowing was awesome.

But venting about the recent situation, however, it very much was the time for that.

"I don't like it either." Claire frowned, giving the bumper of the car in front of them a dirty look for no reason other than it was there in her line of sight. "I get that people are scared and desperate, but if they start forgetting what they stand for and doing the 'necessary' evil, they're not going to be the good guys anymore. I mean, it's how the Company got so out of control."

"Yeah I did but he came through. And thats the Nathan thats here."

It was a hard topic for her sister, she knew it was, Kirby hadn't worked out well for her and things had gotten steadily worse after that. So it was good that the topic changed, but not what it changed into. She didn't like that at all.

"Its familiar right, doing what's needed, whats 'necessary'. Its all kind of twisted up into good intentions and it just gets worse and worse doesn't it. Till there's nothing between them and the bad guys."

She sighed.

"What do you think will come out of this. You don't think they'll go after those poor demons do you? Its Faith, she's gone on about treating them like people for so long. Why would she agree to this?"

"I don't really know why," Claire said with a heavy sigh, rubbing her temple more out of habit than any real headache. "Maybe its just the combination of everything, you know? No Champion, the Scourge being here, all of that."

It was enough to make anyone think extremes, but wasn't the point of being on the good side that they found ways to do things that weren't the extremes, no matter how much they might want to do it the extreme way?

"It just worried me that she was listening to Sam when he's just really... not the best person right now to be suggesting ways to deal with recently murdered half-bloods. Any of the Winchester men, really. And she said she knew that, so I don't know."

Chewing on her lip, Claire turned and looked at her sister again. "So I don't know if they'll go after these demons, but... I know if they try, I can't let them."

"Yeah" she muttered, still a little stunned by how that had happened. She got it, he deserved it. The reward, he'd made up for New York and now they told him he was done. It was gonna take some time, she knew. But he'd be happy again. "Its really not the best time but its still not okay to think like that. Its never gonna be okay with me"

Claire looked down slightly wondering if it was just listening to Sam that was the problem. Sam wasn't the only one saying it by far. But Faith had gone from defending werewolves to being willing to interrogate victims of attack. Would she interrogate humans like that?

"She's wrong. And the problem is it's her call. Thats her job, but maybe thats the problem. Maybe she wants to make everything okay but she can't. We have to think of another way to do this but I'm not gonna let it happen either. If it comes down to you and me protecting him then thats what we'll do"

Claire was sure of it. It was wrong. It was the wrong call. And if Faith made that decision then she'd stop her. Whatever it took.

Claire liked the sound of that. Not the potential of facing down their friends over this, but the idea that they both were on the same side, the same line of thinking, as the other. Maybe the others might see it being because they were both 'Claires', but Claire saw it like sisters on the same side – raised the same way, with the same morals, with different lives at some point that had still made them see the world the way they did.

"I think if they'd be willing to talk to anyone, it'd be you, me and Castiel, because we helped them," she said, because really, it was the only idea she had right now. "I mean, I don't think about it like the owe us or anything, but maybe they would. They might not want to talk, but they'd help us because we helped them."

She shrugged, a little unsure even with that plan. "It has to be better than the other alternative – Faith getting her Slayer on in an interrogation, Jacen picking around in their heads, that stuff. But it means finding them first."

Which was the hard part. Because they were smart, the demons had gone to ground in better places to hide than deserted malls. Maybe they were even already out of the city.

Castiel. The Angel kind of intimidated her, mostly by being an 'angel'. She knew he was like, Dean's Guardian or something but it was still weird thinking of angels and demons and stuff in terms of people they could talk to.

"And there could be actual talking and not hurting y'know. Like we're supposed to do. As for finding them. We could ask Spike. He knows where demons hide out and that kinda thing, right."

It would be perfectly fine if he'd agree to it. But he'd probably agree with Faith and the Jedi. But they were wrong. Utterly wrong. She wished they could see it like she and her sister did.

"We're not wrong are we? They keep trying to tell us the halfbreed and some demons are just normal people so why are they even considering this?"

Claire nodded. Spike seemed dependable enough for the 'rougher' parts of taking care of business, and she hadn't gotten the impression that he ever needed to agreed or disagree about something to be part of it.

As for the rest... "We're not wrong," she said firmly. It wasn't wrong to want to protect these victims. "This, the extent that people think is 'necessary', it's hugely morally wrong. Forget the whole good vs evil thing, I'm not fighting like I do for justice for some, I'm fighting for justice for everybody. For a better place than the one I lived in."

Maybe it wasn't everyone's goal to make this place better than where they'd come from, but it was Claire's no matter how futile some might view or, no matter how futile it might prove to be.

"But you know what?" she continued as they pulled into the parking lot. "We're not gonna figure it out right now, so let's just take an hour or two off of thinking about it and do something that doesn't hinge on morality."

It was shopping, there was no moral code. Shopper's code, sure, but that was totally different.

So include Spike was a plan. At least there was a plan.

And SBC agreed with her, she'd known on some level she would have the same opinion, they'd lived a lot of the same and of course SBC had lived a lot that she hadn't that influenced her judgement on it. "It is, And whatever else I can't be the one that stands by and lets it happen and lets innocents get hurt just to get some info that may or may not be helpful."

Pulling into the parking lot Claire parked up and looked over toward the mall. Shopping. It would make everything better. It always did.

"I think I need shoes. Also a smoothie" she insisted, climbing out of the car.
