Who: Castiel and Ruby (well who else'll talk to her right now!)
What: Tempt... Convincing?
Where: Her apartment
When: 30th July 2006
Rating: TBD
Status: In Progress

Ruby was hungry. It had been days, four or five at least since Castiel had been here though he was still watching everything she said on the internet, angels had that uncanny ability to know when something was going on they didn't much like and Cas seemed to have an extra sense on top of that especially for her. But truth be told she was trying, legitimatly trying, hard and grating as each moment of failure was. And she knew why he was staying away too. She'd tried to get him to come to her, tried to convince him back into her bed but with no ulterior motive beyond wanting him back.

He'd been here and she'd almost kissed him, almost.

But he didn't trust her, even a little and he knew well what she was capable of by way of temptation. So he'd left and hadn't come back. So she'd been playing Donkey Kong for three days straight pausing only to sleep, it was pointless. Irritating. So why was it addictive. In those hours she'd  thought long and hard about what she could do, something real and tangible like Spike and Anya had hinted at, something that Cas could point to and see that she was trying.

And then it came to her. It wasn't something she wanted to do, not entirely, but for him she was willing. And  so, a few moments later, in her own odd little version of praying she called the Angels name.

He needed space from her. Space away from her temptations. Castiel's feelings for Ruby were still complicated, at best. And being that close to her, for too long, it was damaging to him really.

So he spent his time at his favorite haunt, sitting on top of the Hollywood sign. For five days. Not doing anything, just brooding, and using the phone he'd bought, purely for practical purposes, to keep an eye on her use of the internet, and reply as he was needed.

Space. It was what he needed, so that was what he had.

Until she asked for him. Not in a message on the internet, but something more, uttering his name in a prayer. And that was something he couldn't resist, taking a brief moment before he appeared before her in the apartment.

He still took her breath away when he appeared like that, all angelic flutter of wings, he was one of the few who could take her by suprise even when she was expecting him and he'd done it again. It was also true that she wasn't sure if he'd come. If he'd need more time.

"You heard me?" she asked, she wasn't even sure if in calling him like that she was strong enough. But he'd heard her, and that was enough for her.

"How have you been?" she asked awkwardly, sitting down and nodding to him to do the same if she wanted, keeping the space between them since it seemed thats the only way she could keep him around her. "...I wasn't sure if you were gonna come" she confided finally. She wasn't sure if he'd stay either.

"Of course I heard you," Castiel nodded, just a little, as he noted her surprise at his appearance. Sometimes it was nice to know he could still surprise her, that it wasn't all one sided.

"I've been..." he started before he hesitated. "I've been thinking." He sat on a chair, keeping some distance from her. He had to, he just had to. It was too confusing.

"I wasn't sure either," he confessed. "But I'm still here. What can I do for you now that I am."

He sat far from her and if truth be told she was bothered by it, but then she deserved it too didn't she. Not to have him near her.

"Not entirely used to being answered by anyone other than you in this place, and I didn't think you'd come just cause I called"

Thinking, he'd been off somewhere for five days, thinking, just cause of what she'd done the last time he was here, the almost kiss. She knew it was a bad idea. But she couldn't help it, it was him, and she had never stopped loving him through all of this.

"I've been thinking. Its all good talking, promising, but my word doesn't count for much does it. So I need to do something. A gesture, proove that I'm serious about all this. I want you to help me lock myself down, in the body I mean. No possessions, no chances to get close to Sam by taking someone else over"

And sure no exorcisms but that wasn't the main point of all this.

"Its a start isn't it?"

Castiel sat and he listened to her, the words and the implications behind them. What she was saying and what she wasn't saying.

"You want to lock yourself in," he repeated slowly. "On the one hand to prove to them that you can't possess, but on the other..."

He frowned, watching her closely. "It will protect you. Keep you in that body so they can't exorcise you. Can't pull you out of there in any way."

A double edged sword.

"Why are you really asking? To prove to them or protect yourself?"

Nothing got past him did it. Part of the whole Angel thing she supposed. He knew both sides to her arguement just as she'd known he would.

"It will. But they're not allowed send me back anyway are there. Word from above and all. Not to mention, I don't even know for sure locking in would stop Sam. Never tested it. And I figure smiting is smiting. So really all its doing is keeping me in one place. So I can't possess anyone. Sure I could break the mark but you'd know. Because I want you to be the one that does it. But...well, its partly magic isn't it, the symbol. So you have to agree since you've stopped my magic use entirely."

He asked her why she was really asking it.

"Honestly?. I can't say I don't like the idea of being protected, but its also a cage. Its also keeping me locked in here, no demon does this unless they have to Cas, you should know that. Its restricting." She looked over to him, sincere, but then she had faked that so many times before. "What do you think?"

There were other things they could have done, if they wanted. Castiel was smart enough to know that they were thinking of ways to deal with Ruby that didn't involve killing her, plans that would be stopped if she locked herself in.

But wouldn't that be a good thing as far as he was concerned? He couldn't even tell anymore. He couldn't deny that he'd been relieved when the Powers and the Senior Partners had made their ruling.

"I think that they will choose to see it in the worst of ways, choose to see it was a way for you to protect yourself. Yes, I can see the other side of it, but they will not. So, I'm asking you, are you okay with them thinking that?"

Would it bother her? Honestly, she wasn't sure. It would make them trust her even less, not that they trusted her now. And it would make her look like a coward. But she had said what she needed to to them, most of them anyway. Now she just needed to prove herself to Cas.

"...They already hate me, with every reason to, and you'll know the other side. Thats enough I'm not okay with it but I accept it"

She would be as long as he never gave up on her, he never could. Not ever, if he did, that would be it. She needed him to trust her again.

"All I need is you giving me a chance. I can deal with whatever else comes if I can have that"

Castiel sighed, closing his eyes for a moment as he tried to figure things out. It wasn't easy, every action brought doubt these days.

"I'll need to think about it."

They'd know it was him, know that he'd allowed her to do this and if they didn't like it, he would have to answer to them. And he owed them, he really did. He felt caught between two forces and he didn't know any more what the right course of action even was.

She got that, she really did, of course he wasn't just going to let her do something, the motives for which could be good or bad from his point of view, he didn't think he knew her anymore, or maybe he did know her, better than ever and that was the problem.

"I know. Look, Take all the time you need. I just, it seems like something I can do. I need to do something. we can't just stay like...this, not forever."

She knew he'd understand her, this, staying like this, it hurt her. Deservedly of course but even still. Being around him this close so often and not being with him.

"If I'm going to prove myself to you, you need to let me"
