What came out of his mouth next surprised him. The thought hadn't even occured to him before he said it. "I wouldn't trust me if I was them," he said, eyeing the glass of wine in front of him but making no move to pick it up. "Then again, I would have seen someone like me as a problem and gotten rid of them as soon as I could have." It didn't matter who he hung out with, he still wasn't going to be a "good" guy, which settled just fine with him.
"I've been so many things in the past few years, I can't keep them straight. And they all fit, enough that know I feel like I'm a study in them all at the same time." He looked up at her. "I was riding high when we were together. You never made me unhappy, Eve." It was an honest sentiment. She'd done what he'd needed to bring his plan into effect, she'd been his eyes and ears inside of the firm until end game.
Which was why he was going to try and pay her back by finding a way to give her her freedom. "Have to admit, it was funny watching them give the Senior Partners a headache," he said after a moment, breaking the silence.
