The dog was deceptive. It...he, Dean reminded himself was a cute puppy, but carrying him was harder than it looked. It was clear that the mastiff was going to earn his name in time...Dean could only hope that it was after they had him trained. That was what he promised Mary when she turned a skeptical eye to the size of the baby puppy.
Dean knew the truth though. She could not have told him no, not when she knew the gift was for Ben. It was silly to worry about the birthday so much, to try to think of every possible "good" thing to do on the day, but Dean didn't care. It was the first birthday that Ben would have a father to celebrate with, the first birthday where Dean would be aware that it was his son blowing out the candles. It was worth it, even if this little monster chewed up house and home in the long run. Dean knew Ben would like him.
"Shhh..." Dean said, as though the dog would understand. Unsteadily he lugged the dog through the cracked door, and, after debating over whether to put the puppy on the bed or the floor, sat the dog on the floor. He leaned down once more to adjust the big blue bow on the dog's collar. If everything worked out,the puppy would get lonely and start whimpering right about the time Dean crawled back in bed. He knew Ben would know the truth, the timing would be too much of a coincidence, but Dean had his mind made up that he was going to keep his son guessing as to the dog's origins...at least for a little while.
