It was a strange thing, the hibernation process used by Nosgoth vampires. Used to develop new abilities essentially, it was almost like a deep sleep that lasted anywhere from a week to several weeks or a month in length. The user was aware he was sleeping however, and capable of jolting himself out of the unconscious state if there was danger. Kain had no idea whether ancient vampires did this. It was simply the way he worked, and he had accepted that he was different from other vampires. While he had adjusted to a stable form some time ago, Kain could trigger the transformation at any time, though it was not something to be done often. It was a form of advanced evolution, and it had served them well in the Empire until the corruption set in from his madness, poisoning the dark gifts they received.
Sometimes the changes were insignificant, almost unworthy of being noticed. Sometimes they were increased stamina or speed, normal things like that. Other times they were incredible gifts that astounded those around them, vampires and humans alike. Because vampires evolved unpredictably, they never knew what they were going to end up with. There was a point at which it stopped functioning, though. Kain knew that at his age, he was likely not going to evolve any more abilities that he didn't learn himself through magic and other means. Janos had remained weak in several areas, after all, and Vorador had never evolved past the state he met him in 30 years after the Pillars' corruption. From then on, he assumed the resting period could be used to rejuvenate oneself, but not to evolve any further. Even so, it was still worth taking a chance on. If he could gain even one more ability during his time here, it would be one more ability he could use against the Elder God.
