Lisa Garland sighed, putting away some things. It had been a somewhat hard day, and the argument with Alessa from last night still lingered in her mind. She couldn't believe Alessa had talked to her so crudely and with such hatred. She never expected the little girl she took care of in Alchemilla to talk to her with such contempt. She sat on the bed, feeling apathetic beyond words.
The girl had sent her a text message earlier. It seemed like she had gone out and gotten drunk. Lisa wasn't sure whether to respond, so she stayed away from her phone.
She looked down at the magical necklace Alessa had given her. She remembered her thoughts about it. It probably wouldn't work, but Alessa seemed to think it would protect her.
And so it had. It had kept Valtiel away from her, and she hadn't seen the angel at any time in the city. She didn't even know whether he was still in the city or not. She hadn't seen him on the boards in some time. But whether he had gone away or was just keeping his distance, Alessa's warding necklace had done its job.
But that was back then, when she and Alessa were getting along. Now...Lisa wasn't sure what was going on. She was almost certain the girl would never speak to her again. Sometimes she wondered if Alessa was capable of seeing past her own pain. Lisa hadn't been honest with Alessa about some things, but Alessa's memory was more stable than hers. It was ironic. She had all the pieces, and yet she couldn't see why Dahlia's presence here would cause Lisa pain. And that brought her some dubious feelings about the necklace Alessa had given her.
She didn't need Alessa's help. She had always looked after herself just fine. Opening the top drawer of her dresser, she put the necklace behind some clothing at the back of the drawer. Turning off the main light, she crawled into bed, facing the nearby window looking out into L.A.
She lay on the bed for several minutes in the dark, not staring at anything in particular. She kept thinking of what Alessa said, how upset she was. Maybe she was out of line. But then she thought about the things Xander said. She was sure she had creeped him out with all that Hell talk, but he made some good points. Lisa had to stand up to Alessa and show her she wasn't some doormat to be pushed around. Her thoughts turned suddenly towards the necklace.
Putting it away wasn't enough. She got out of bed, turned on the night lamp and retrieved the necklace from the drawer. She rushed over to the window. Opening the window, she threw the necklace out into the city with all her strength. Afterward, she closed the window and put the curtains back the way they were.
There. Now she had no tie to the girl. If Valtiel wanted to come after her, fine. She would deal with him on her own. He wasn't all-powerful here, that much she was learning.
Maybe this would get Alessa's attention the next time they talked.
