Who: Dukat & Dr. Tony Hill
What: Dukat goes to visit the Appleton and Dr. Hill
When: Late Afternoon-Early Evening
Where: The theater
Rating: TBD but low

Dukat had heard of the Appleton investigations through the odd couple, the humorous Shawn Spenser and his partner Detective Creegan but it just happened he wasn’t there to visit them though he would give anything if they could find his way back home. No, he was there to meet his friend, if you could call their acquisition and Dukat’s view of his species’ superiority as truly friendship. Dukat, however, did see him as one of his few friends and as close as Cardassian as he could get that wasn’t Garak.

The Cardassian had opted to wear his uniform to see his ‘friend’ at the organization housed in a theater. The gul walked into the building, his pale eyes scanning his surroundings with a mix of wariness and curiosity as he moved further in. “Dr. Hill?” he called in his best booming tone that was only heightened by the acoustics of the structure “Are you here?” he added with an arched eyeridge.

Tony had been up in his place within the theater. He had previously thought it was a maintenance shop but the more he had looked around the more he had realized that it was, in fact, a projector room. Whatever its former life had been, though, didn't matter now. Its purpose was now to house the odd doctor and what little he had brought with him.

The bit of money he was bringing in from his work with local schools was enough to supply him with the funds necessary to buy a few book cases, a desk and chair, and a bed. At some point he would also purchase a computer but he hadn't found one yet that he liked.

To say he was startled to hear his name being called in such a way would have been an understatement. He peered out one of the squares in the wall meant for lights to shine down on the stage far below and tried to figure where the voice was coming from. And then it dawned on him why the voice seemed familiar and he chuckled.

"Give me a moment," he hollered back and proceeded to descend to the lower level through the maze of employee stairwells.

The gul lifted his head, catching the familiar voice of the doctor above him though he didn’t see him. He let his lips curve into a grin, hollering back in his direction “Take your time.” He found himself studying this former bastion of human culture with his pale blue orbs, admiring the alien architecture that met his gaze as he moved his attention up to the ornate ceiling. Gently he let his arms move behind him, adding to his attire to give him a military-like appearance.

“I must say this place has a certain Bajoran flavor to it…though being that we are nearly four hundreds before Human and Bajoran relations I would say it merely a coincidence” he remarked more to himself then actually Tony about the building though he said it loud enough for him to hear. Once he had found his way to him the Cardassian turned about to face him, keeping up that commanding posture while he was smirking at the doctor “I’m not disturbing you am I?” he asked putting on his best expression of concern though it was difficult to judge if he really felt any of the emotion he had on his ashen face.

Tony puzzled over the gul's assessment of his new home. He had never heard of 'Bajoran' and had no idea what kind of flavor it would have. Oh well...

It took a bit of work but Tony finally came into view. He glanced back over his shoulder and smirked to himself. He decided that given how long it had taken him to descend to the main level that he should hope there was never a fire in the place which required him to make a speedy exit.

"Not at all. I was just working on some paperwork but it can wait." He extended a hand to Dukat. "To what do I owe the visit?" Tony asked with a pleasant smile.

“Ah paperwork…not something I miss” Dukat graciously took the hand into his own in a surprisingly warm handshake, placing a hand over the gesture to secure the shake like they were very good friends. Gently he withdrew his hands from Tony’s, offering him an innocent look though innocence and Dukat didn’t quite exist in the same dimension “Oh do I need a reason to visit a friend?”

The gul had all the grace of a predatory cobra slithering through the grass, waiting for that right moment to strike as he moved around the human but he didn’t attack. There was something fascinatingly dark about him though his manner seemed cordial. He gave a contrasting nature; he was disarming and unnerving at one time, and that deep beguiling voice didn’t help to clear up that disparity of his “I thought we could talk…it has a occurred to me that we haven’t had that much time to talk and friends are so rare to come by…so here I am”

Tony nodded, scratching the back of his head. "I've noticed this as well. I find acquaintances are much easier to come by as a general rule, though, even before coming here." He paused. "Some things never change." The doctor shrugged after his grime assessment. "Such is life."

He studied Dukat. He was not frightened of him but he was also wary enough of this place now that he didn't quite trust anything. However, he kept those feelings from reading his face.

Tony took a seat on the edge of a desk and tilted his head to one side just slightly. "What do you want to talk about?"

“True words have never been spoke” he remarked in a soft tone, offering a sympathetic look to the Doctor. The gul felt his eyes studying him, it didn’t bother him because in his mind he commanded power and poise so he should be admired and in a darker part of him, feared. Dukat chose to return the study, allowing his smoky blue eyes to take in the human before him. He was shorter then him though that mainly cause of the thick boots he was wearing, they added a few good inches as otherwise they be nearly eye-to-eye. Tony also shared a body type that was quite similar to the Cardassian’s though Dukat was a bit lankier in shape. He reminded himself once more he certainly would have made a fantastic Cardassia! His gaze lingered on his forehead ‘too bad’ he thought to himself as he dismissed his mad thoughts, turning towards the theater once more.

Hearing his next words he twisted his attention back to Tony, grinning widely “Now that is a good question!” The Cardassian said loudly, gesturing at him with his pointer finger like Tony had found the missing piece of a grand puzzle that Dukat was working on. The gul moved nimbly forward, mimicking Tony’s head tilt as he pulled himself up next to him on the desk that managed to hold both their weights “Oh well people have a tendency to say I talk too much about himself…perhaps we should start with you? You mentioned you were a Doctor?”

Tony's eyebrows rose slightly. "Yes. I am a doctor. Not a medical one- a psychologist."

The doctor wasn't sure what Dukat could want from him. It wasn't like he knew anything of human medicine- let alone alien medicine. And as for psychological problems? Well, he wasn't quite sure if aliens had mental problems similar to humans. Maybe? If they did then that would be interesting.

“A psychologist?” he asked with a curious expression painted upon his lightly gray features that nearly mirrored Tony’s own questioning look. Then finally he spoke once more, the meaning of Tony’s career dawned on him “Ah yes! … A doctor of the mental health variety I assume …”

He shifted some so he was resting more comfortably on the desk edge, allowing his thin ankles to cross each other while he added offhandedly “though I was under the impression they were called psychiatrists and councilors” By his words Cardassians, evidently did have some knowledge of the mental health system though it wasn’t surprising, the Cardassians were a technologically advanced species and came from the future where exchange of information and products of different worlds was common. “Tell me what’s the difference between psychologist and psychiatrists?” he inquired arching his neck slightly, his lips curled into a faint smile.

"Yes, that would be my profession." He paused, trying to think of a way to put the difference. "A psychologist counsels but is not a doctor of medicine. A psychologist cannot prescribe medications. A psychiatrist, however, is a doctor of medicine and can prescribe medications. Generally, a psychologist will refer a person to a psychiatrist if they believe that the patient would benefit from the expertise of a medical doctor in addition to a counselor."

“You would be a kind of…” He moved his hand about as if trying to draw the word from the air “mediator between the patient and the psychiatrist? A diplomat of the mental health system though it’s a referral that you are measuring out…” Quietly he chuckled as he glanced down at his armor, more precisely at the symbol of the Cardassian people of his breastplate.

Finally he spoke again, easing himself back a bit to stretch his back with a sigh following suit. His gaze was once on the Doctor, his neck tilted in such a usual curious manner for him as he openly studied him again, his lips curled lightly into a smirk “I’m sure that must lead you to some dark territory…people telling you their darkest little secrets…”

He leaned towards him to put emphasis on the intimacy of the conversation that only seem to make Dukat more ominous before he broke into a toothy somewhat superior grin “someone like you could be dangerous with all those secrets but I’m sure you have rules … medical ethics and all that” he replied slightly flippant. The gul shifted again so he was now leaning forward, his lanky arms resting over his legs that were now open "I'm sure you would like to know some of my secrets" he said smirking slyly.

"Something like that," Tony replied. "Sometimes, though, all someone really needs is someone to talk to. Someone who is sworn to secrecy. They need someone to just vent to. I do that for the most part in my work- I counsel people and try to help them without resorting to medications."

He blinked, considering the comment. "It does." The doctor didn't know what Dukat was up to- asking something like that. However, he didn't shy away from him as the gul leaned closer. Tony held his ground and his composure without flinching. "I do have rules- ethics. It's a code of conduct that must be followed."

Tony sighed, "I don't want to know things but people always seem to want to tell me things."

In all truth, Tony didn't have much interest in the secrets of others. He was always more concerned with trying to understand the motives of those he studied. Understanding motives, reasoning, meant one could spot such traits and treat them- prevent them from mutating into something far more insidious. He was always curious about others but he would never pry into their personal lives.

Though... he might make an exception for one person but it wasn't the one currently sizing him up.

Dukat smirked at Tony; he oddly seemed pleased to see his strength to stand his ground against him and that he held strongly to his views. In his mind he believed he was correct in choosing him as a friend, which considering he was a Cardassian, who were often xenophobic in their views on other species it was quite a feat. Also, he did enjoy a little mental sparring, as it was the Cardassian way to battle for domination of any situation. Being in their minds they were superior it was only logical that they would want to be in charge, even in conversations.

He gently chuckle but an intensity washed over his slim features as he spoke “They recognize your strength. They are drawn to it and they take some level of comfort from it to fill their own weakness. It is a terrible burden to hold such power over others…Power can either make you acclaimed or vilified” His speech ended in a sigh that matched the man’s next to him.

Acclaimed or vilified...

It was strange that those were the words that stuck out the most to him. It was hard to maintain relationships when the other party was always wondering if you were analyzing their every action and word. The truth was that it was a hard ability to turn off. It took a conscious effort to do it. However, it was something that Tony worked to achieve. He had to turn off that part of his mind every once in awhile or else he would collapse under the weight of all that knowledge.

Tony laughed at Dukat's assessment of him. "I'm strong, huh?"

The doctor didn't think of himself as strong. He considered his spirit to be weak at best- crushed and broken at worst. But, he did his best to hide his inner thoughts and feelings. They would do him no favors when dealing with his patients. They relied on him to be strong and detached. For their sake, he played the part. It was hard to let down those walls and let someone see the real Tony. It was doubtful anyone had in a very long time.

Sometimes, Tony wondered if he even knew who the real Tony was any more.

Hearing him laugh, though maybe sardonic in nature, he could help but chuckle seeing the guarded man emit some kind of amusement “I think you’re a lot stronger then you give yourself credit for.” He replied with a shrug of his broad shoulders as the chuckle died away.

Gently he gestured around Tony as if he were indicating something invisible “It takes a lot of power to build those walls that you have around you. Even now you are doing your very best to keep me from penetrating your defenses like we are playing a round of Kotra…or in your species’ case chess… and quite well if I might add. I must admit you rather fascinate me; I haven’t met many humans with the mental fortitude of a Cardassian.” He tilted his head carefully before breaking so delicately into a smile he believed to be charming “You are a credit to your species Tony…” For the first time he used his first name.

"It's all about playing a part- being a good actor. You play the part that needs playing at that particular time," Tony replied in a matter-of-fact fashion.

He raised an eyebrow at the compliment the gul was giving him. "I appreciate that. Thank you."

The use of his first name was not lost on the doctor but he didn't point it out. It just didn't seem proper to do such a thing.

“Yes!” That passion was back in his body language again as he jumped back on his feet like a nimble teenage then his true fifty-something age. He certainly didn’t act or looks like a man well into his middle age, he could have easily passed for someone in his late thirty. The Cardassian moved to stand in front of him; unable to keep that glint of excitement from entering his light azure eyes as he spoke with that strangely charismatic tone in his voice “That is it exactly! Every interaction is a performance but a different one…” Abruptly he lowered himself so they were eye-to-eye as if he was trying to gather some kind of information there then broke that contact as he moved about, appearing to look for a chair.

“You play to others needs then? As you said you help people and what is more helpful then something they can relate to….a kindred spirit if you will” He settled on the chair behind the unused desk, drawing his legs up and crossed them at the ankles, at the same time without missing a beat he continued “Since you been so kind to tell me about yourself, perhaps I should reveal something of me” Dukat leaned back into the chair giving him a curious look that seemed so wily “Tell me, what would you like to know?”

Tony nodded, "Something like that, yes, I play to their needs. People open up to a person who does not come in on the offensive. If you listen to people they will often tell you what their problems are without you even asking a single question. Usually, they have had the answer all along but didn't realize it."

The doctor thought this over. What did he want to know? "Well... What do you think I want to know about you?"

He didn't know what he asked that question- it just was the first thing that popped into his head.
