Lyle had stepped out of the kitchen after having snagged a mini-box of raisins. He loved getting snacks. He was about to go back to his room, when he once again noticed that unusual man standing near the window. He didn't seem to be moving a muscle. He was a big guy, too. Lyle hoped he'd never piss off a guy of that build. He walked over to him, tentatively. "Umm.. excuse me.."
The machine only turned his head, staring at him with blank eyes. His face serious as it always seemed. He spoke in his neutral, Austrian tone, "Yes?"
Lyle paused, noticing that only the man's head had turned. Most people swerve or at least turn their shoulder as well. "Well.. uhh, what are you doing? Or looking at?"
"Scanning this particular area of the perimeter," he said in reply. "Compiling data of the surroundings and of anyone visible near the building." He was always scanning. Passing cars, pedestrians, lamp posts, people.. everything. Once he was done near this window, he'd probably take a walk around the outside of the hotel. "In the event that I conclude there a tactical thread, that information is passed on to the Hyperion hierarchy."
"Huh.. okay," Lyle said with a slow nod. "Wait, but you are compiling data? How can you do it without a laptop? Or at least a notebook and pen?"
The machine replied, "There is no need. All data received goes to my CPU, which categorizes into several subfiles according to the nature of the scanned object."
"Into your CPU..." Lyle paused, staring at him. The man didn't look like a computer. Or even a robot. They just didn't make things like those. Not yet, anyway. "So you're some kind of robot? Android?"
He would shake his head if he were human. "Negative. Cybernetic organism, or cyborg for short term. Living tissue over a metal endoskeleton. Programmed by Skynet to terminate John Connor, the leader of the human resistance that will lead the humans to victory in 2029."
"Holy.. err, what? You kinda lost me after cyborg." He'd heard of John from the boards, but the rest was a bit crazy. "So why didn't you kill him yet? And what is this Skynet thing, and.. Resistance? LIke in a war?"
He replied, "I was reprogrammed by John's Tech Comm brigade. The nuclear war was started by a supercomputer Skynet, built by humans as a military defense database, but became self-aware and started a war to eliminate all humans. It has sent terminators back to erase his existence."
Lyle stared in that confused way yet again. Time travel. But that was fiction. Oh wait, no it wasn't. There was a couple he had heard of that stayed at this hotel. But machines.. from the future. Sounded like a movie. Maybe he should look into it. "So.. you were sent back too."
T-850 answered, "Affirmative. Some if us were also sent to protect. However, there was a slight miscalculation and I was instead sent here to this parallel version of the city. It is different than the pre-Judgment Day Los Angeles in my files. But John Connor is here also. He must survive. Any beast or demon that would prematurely halt his existence or health must be terminated."
"Uhh.. right..." Lyle nodded, turning. "Yeah. Um, I'm.. I am just gonna go now.." Shaking his head, he left the machine, who had resumed his scouting out the window. Lyle pulled the Gameboy from his pocket and went to sit on one of the couches in the lobby, also pulling out the raisin box. "Now, let's see what I can play....
