She'd tripped an alarm. She never tripped alarms.
The book Lilah had requested was slipped into her bag, but she was in a hurry because even now she could hear the sirens wailing their way towards the building where the penthouse she'd just robbed sat on the top floor. She hadn't left anything behind that could be traced back to her, but that didn't matter to Bela. The point was she'd tripped a silent alarm, and that was simply the sort of thing that was unacceptable in her line of work. It was unacceptable to her own high standards and even with the book tucked safely away she'd failed on some level.
The worst part, perhaps, was not being able to blame anyone but herself. She didn't know who had been responsible for the chocolate, so there was little blame to pass there. She'd tried blaming Sam, but had a hard time justifying that any further when she thought what had happened during their 'outing' and then their conversation the day before. She maintained that it had to be after effects of the chocolate that had loosened her tongue so much. Neither were actually events Bela wanted to think about, but she couldn't exactly just forget what had happened. She'd likely been thinking about it when she'd tripped the damn alarm.
"Stupid, stupid, stupid…" Bela muttered underneath her breath as she hurried away from the building. She was getting away, she wasn't going to be caught, and she knew she'd gotten exactly what Lilah had asked for and then some. There was absolutely no reason for her to be so upset over a tripped alarm. Granted, it likely wasn't the tripped alarm that had her blinking back tears while she waited for a light to change. Two more blocks back to the parking garage and then she was going to sit in her car for a long, long while before dropping off Lilah's package.
