WHO: Kyle Hyde (closed; narrative)
WHAT: Kyle watches Samara's mysterious videotape
WHEN: Afternoon
WHERE: Kyle's motel room
RATING: PG-13 for mild profanity and some gross imagery on the tape.
STATUS: COMPLETE
Kyle had to get out of this motel soon. He was running out of money. But the guy running it was a nice sort at least, and had loaned him an old VCR so he could watch Samara's tape. Kyle would have invited the guy to watch the tape with him, but he had no idea what it was. It could be porn for all he knew. He really hoped it wasn't; porn was not his thing.
Grabbing a glass of bourbon mixed with bottled water (he was never trusting the tap water here again), Kyle put the tape in the machine. He had never had a VCR, they were pretty new in his day, but this one seemed simple enough.
First there was a little static, then a white ring on a black background. Was that her movie company logo, or something?
Then he saw some water, that looked like it was boiling, and a chair just sitting there. What the hell kind of movie was this? And it didn't even seem to be in color.
A pretty woman appeared, brushing her hair, and Kyle expected something interesting to happen then. But there were just a bunch more images: a mouth with something long and slimy-looking coming out of it, which was pretty gross, and what looked like a huge bunch of maggots, which wasn't exactly pleasant either.
Then there was a dog's butt, and the woman showed up again and jumped off a cliff. After that he saw more static, which didn't seem to stop. Kyle found the fast forward button and hit it, but that was all there was to the tape. It was only a couple of minutes long. That would explain why Samara was able to make a new one so fast. And it was just as well that it was so short, because he didn't really want to sit through any more of it.
He sat on the bed, sipping his bourbon. As far as he could tell it was some kind of modern art project. No wonder Samara had trouble describing what it was. And now she would want to know what he thought. He couldn't tell her he thought it was pretty weird and pointless, even though he did. Kyle had been reminded on his last job how sensitive artists were, and though he didn't know Samara well he didn't really want to insult her to her face. Well, he'd just have to say it was "symbolic" or some kind of BS like that.
Maybe he'd go see a normal movie tonight, so he wouldn't keep thinking about that mouth and those maggots. Artists were a strange bunch, that was for sure.
