Peter was quiet. Still. Silent in mind, body, and presence. No more than a statue, sitting on the edge of the roof. A gargoyle. Make me a stone. Where had those words come from? He seemed to have heard them once, but the source was fuzzy.
Things weren't working. Nothing was working. Oh, his powers were functioning, that was for damn sure. But his healing abilities were all but worthless. They weren't saving anyone. He'd even tried some of his blood to heal Faith, but the Slayer had remained as she was. A corpse.
It was wrong. It was all wrong. But rather than work up the will to feel righteous and furious anger, all the will had stalled in him at one simple realization: he'd failed. He was the Champion, the one chosen by the Powers That Be to protect this city. A job he'd never wanted, never asked for, but had come to embrace over the past months as his duty. Now, the death toll was rising, and would only continue to rise.
Faith. River Tam. Charlie. Xander. Aaron. Lavender. Sarah. How long would the list go? How long before there were no more dying, and only the dead? And who would be left, once the Horsemen had cleared the stage of everyone else?
Peter Petrelli.
The knowledge that his nieces would likely be with him was no comfort.
