It was for his own protection that the symbiote was taking over his life. It curled around him and held fast, and Eddie, standing outside a café, on a street corner, anywhere, would put his hand to his face and feel the tendrils of the suite slithering out against his skin. Over and over again in his head, a whisper in the back of his brain was repeating the same phrase: Protect the human. The human is weak. Protect the other side. From time to time, the voice would get on his nerves and in a rage that never lasted long, Eddie would pick something up and smash it against the nearest wall. He’d hear it shatter to pieces and fall to the ground, and for five minutes, he would feel satisfied.
His satisfaction always went away too soon, and before he knew it, he was back to pacing and clenching his teeth together so tight that his jaws ached from the pressure. Nothing worked. Nothing kept it down, sedated and agreeable.
Change of plans. Felicia was suffering and he’d told her that he’d be there in a few minutes. It never happened. Minutes faded away into hours and hours transformed into a day. Eddie couldn’t risk knocking on her door until he could smother the symbiote and get it to stop; just stop, go away for ten minutes and he would thank it for listening to him.
He went through the night as Venom. Venom perched himself on ledges and swung from buildings, snatching up prey in his clawed hands and carrying them to his preferred perch of choice. He took demons and vampires and the occasional human being who was out of control and therefore unfit to be placed safely within his innocent classification.
Venom faded out during the early hours of the morning, making room for Eddie, who promptly and gratefully crawled up the side of his apartment building and fell asleep. He awoke five hours later and again went out as Venom. That alone was unusual for someone like his other side, who favored a nocturnal schedule.
The controlling urges of Venom lost consciousness for the third time in two days and Eddie decided to take advantage. Parking the Lexus at the curb he jumped out of the car and headed for Felicia’s apartment.
Standing outside of her door, he knocked twice and waited for her to open it.
