Peter could feel the tension that was getting close to the breakdown stage. He cast a glance towards Bennet, who nodded him back to the doors. Taking that cue, Peter carried Toby inside.
So you want to be a hero? he asked, smiling just a bit. Okay. But it's something you have to work at. Something you have to learn. And it takes time, Toby. Time, and patience, and practice. Heroes don't go looking for trouble.
In the kitchen now, Peter set Toby on one of the counters and leaned back a bit to look at the boy. "You have to know just what people want. And the way to learn that, is by watching them, and talking to them."
He smiled a bit and glanced at the bags of groceries. "Why don't we make some soup for Sarah? I'll show you where those buttery crackers are, and we can think of some things to do that might help her feel a bit better."
