It wasn't that she was angry with Tom, Jenny thought, shoving her dirty clothes into the laundry hamper, then thrusting on her pajamas. She just needed some time away from him. The incessant calls and texts were annoying, especially when she was couped up in the house during this strange power outage with the schools closed.
He was so infuriating sometimes. But still so sweet.
He'd told her he didn't blame her for rejecting his proposal, in one of those text messages. Saying that ever since then, Jenny had been different. They all had. Audrey called her foolish when she dialed her old friend to tell her about the proposal and her subsequent rejection. Ever practical, Audrey had pointed out that Jenny would see Julian for maybe eight hours a day. Why not have Tom, too, to take care of her through the remaining sixteen.
Dee had been more sympathetic. Telling her to do what makes her happy, even if it meant upsetting something that Jenny had known all her life.
The problem wasn't her own confusion, Jenny pondered, the problem was that there was no real solution to what she wanted. And that was the most frustrating thing of all. Closing her eyes, she pulled the warm covers up around her, a smile curling the bare corners of her mouth.
