Amy ran as fast as she could from the ballroom, lifting her buttercup-yellow gown so she wouldn't trip. Bernice Sutherland was dead. Amy had watched her burn right before her eyes. She had tried to help her, tried to throw a tablecloth over her to extinguish the flames, but Bernice just kept running. Running and screaming as her skin started to turn black as charcoal. It was one of the most horrible things Amy had ever seen, and if David Hathaway hadn't saved her, her fate would have been the same. She hoped he was okay.
When the smoke had cleared, her eyes when wide. This was not New Orleans, or any other city she'd ever seen before. The buildings were so tall! She walked foward slowly, looking around in awe. Where was she?
Before she could ponder further, her foot hit something. She looked down to find Cousin Angelica's cards.
She put a hand over her mouth. The cards. Two people had died, and she had turned up the death card three times. There was going to be one more death...but was that a death in New Orleans, or wherever it was she'd found herself? She had to know. So she picked up the cards and started to shuffle, though it felt like her hands were doing the shuffling for her. She found herself in front of a strange gray bin, laying out the cards. And every one of them were death.
But that couldn't be right. There was only one death card in the tarot. How were they all death?
She heard noise and jumped, startled. "Hello?" No answer. "Cousin Angelica?"
Just then it hit her. The cards were speaking to her. They were all death because they were telling her future. The last death would be hers.
She gathered the cards in one quick swipe of her hand and started to run for her life all over again.
