Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:kitty pryde, peter petrelli (future), rogue

Who: Peter, Rogue, and Kitty
What: Old friends, new friends, and a bit of power conflict
Where: Hyperion; Lobby
Rating: PG
Status: COMPLETE

Even if the security system was top of the line, there were still plenty of things that had to be maintained. And Peter was doing his best to update all the new faces that had been appearing, adding information to the recognition software. A good deal of the data could be upgraded from the inside, where he could just put his own memories and thoughts directly into the programming, so it was much easier and more accurate for him to make the updates.

After some time, a notice popped up. Peter tapped it, and the video screen came up, of an unidentified person moving through camera range. Peter saw the girl, and a moment later, saw Kitty Pryde walking beside her.

He withdrew from the computer system, and watched the door, waiting for them to enter, curious at whom Kitty had decided to bring in.

Rogue made her way up to, and through, the front doors of the Hyperion. After staying at the mansion for so long, it wasn't as jaw-dropping as it might be to others. But it was nice, she had to admit. She paused just inside, looking around the spacious lobby and ultimately spotting Peter.

Her eyes widened a bit and she glanced to her friend. Silently she wondered if he had been informed of her arrival, or if they'd beaten the email here. Looking back to the stranger, she waved one gloved hand.

"Hi there," she greeted him. "I'm sorry to barge in on you. My name's Rogue. Kitty said I might be able to stay here?" She offered a slightly nervous smile and glanced to her teammate once more, silently urging her to say something. Anything would do at this point, really.

The Hyperion Hotel was a nice place, but it definitely couldn't hold a candle to the Institute. But, Kitty wasn't going to complain about the accommodations, because if it hadn't been for Peter and them, Kitty would probably still be homeless.

She offered Peter a slight smile, as Rogue went ahead and introduced herself. All the while she was hoping she wasn't overstepping her bounds by bringing her there. "Did you get my e-mail?" she asked, after her teammate had shot her 'will you talk already?!' sort of look. At least, that was how she had interpreted it.

Peter had been smiling a bit, but when the new girl entered, and gave her name, the pleasant smile had slipped from his lips. Peter blinked, and took in the white streaks in the girl's hair, the long gloves, the covered skin. A bit of color seemed to drain from his face.

Then he looked over at Kitty when she spoke. "Email?" then he shook his head, speaking rapidly. "Yeah, I was updating things and glanced at it, hang on, did you say your name is Rogue?"

She wasn't more than ten feet from him by now. Too late to try and get away, get out of range. Too late to try to even consider suppressing that ability.

Her stomach tightened at his tone of voice, her smile hesitating a bit as she slowly nodded. "Yeah, that's me. Rogue." She blinked. "Is there... something the matter?"

It was the most polite way she could think to ask the question, because obviously something was, in fact, the matter. She just didn't know what it could be. She hadn't done anything, as far as she could tell. Neither had Kitty.

Maybe he was just always like this?

She looked to her friend. "Maybe I should come back another time..." she offered quietly. She really didn't want to be an imposition.

Kitty's face fell when she saw Peter's reaction and she gently grabbed her friend by the arm (a gloved portion of it), pulling her back slightly. She knew what was going on... kind of, anyway. And she knew pulling her away probably wouldn't help matters any, but at least she tried!

"Are you going to be okay, Peter?" she asked, trying to keep the panic from rising her voice.

Slowly, Peter nodded. "I'll be fine. Don't really have much of a choice now, in any case." He let out a breath. "I really need to stop working the front desk."

Then he looked at Rogue, and gave her a friendly (if lightly strained) smile. "Hi, Rogue. I'm Peter. I absorb the abilities of others at fifty paces, so I sort of got wind of your ability as you walked in the door. Sorry for freaking out. That was just... a little unexpected."

For a minute, Rogue thought she must have heard him wrong. Absorb the abilities of others just by getting close? With hers, at least she had to touch someone. And it wasn't permanent. Was his?

She was almost afraid to ask, as she realized with startling clarity that he now had her ability. All of the color drained from her face as realization dawned.

"Oh... oh no! I'm sorry!" she apologized, feeling a great swell of sorrow. It was bad enough to never be able to touch someone, but to inflict the same on someone else? That was downright horrible.

She glanced to Kitty, having just now felt the touch on her arm and registered the fact that she'd tried to pull her back, and wondered if the girl had known. If she'd realized what bringing her here would do.

"I should go," she mumbled, turning toward the exit once more. Her gaze dropped downward, guilt making her stomach churn.

"You'll be able to suppress it like the others, won't you?" Kitty asked quickly, still looking horrible about this whole situation. And if she felt this bad, she couldn't even begin to fathom how Rogue had felt about this revelation.

"No, Rogue. Stay," she told her teammate with a wane smile. The damage had been done and there was no way to reverse it. There'd be no point in her leaving the premises. It's not like it would help things.

It was kind of odd feeling so strongly about Rogue as a friend. It wasn't that they hadn't been friendly towards each other in the past, but what with all of the strangeness with Bobby... Well, she just didn't think she'd be able to look Rogue in the eye ever again.

"Hey, hey," Peter said gently, darting around the desk and catching Rogue by the shoulder, making sure to touch cloth and no skin. He already had her ability, yes, but she didn't need all of his.

"It's not your fault," he said. "Not at all. And don't worry." This was directed at both of them now. "Soon as I get a little control over it, I can suppress it. Lock it away with all the others, and it won't bother me again."

And he would get control over it. Five years experience with over five hundred different abilities, he would make damn sure to get control of it.

Rogue had stayed inside the lobby - although just barely - at Kitty's insistance. However, when Peter touched her, she still flinched back from him a bit before slowly looking his way. "Suppress it?" she echoed.

Looking past him, to Kitty, she seemed lost for a second before she turned back to him. "You can't suppress it," she stated quietly. "There's no turning it off. It ain't going away. I... I'm so sorry."

She seemed to somewhat get ahold of herself then, and turned back to her friend. "But, I guess since you both won't let me leave," there was a hint of a smile on her face at that statement, "I might as well get a room." Her smile grew, more sincere and less forced. "And, thanks Kitty. For helping me. I probably forgot to say it in the cafe, but I appreciate it a lot."

Because that's what being mature was about, wasn't it? Forgiving people, moving past mistakes and learning to get along despite differences? These people here were doing something right, something good. She'd already screwed things up just by being here. The least she could do now was help them with their work, and the first step had to be getting past whatever issue she might've once had with Kitty Pryde.

"Hey," she said, smiling a bit more brightly this time, "that's what friends are for, right?"

Cheesy and it might've been a forward assumption, but they weren't exactly in a place where they had friends in abundance. And besides that, Kitty was more than willing to bury the hatchet and try to move on. Hopefully, she'd be able to gain a new (or an old) friend back again?

And besides that, what had happened with Bobby was just as much her fault as it had been his. She had been overstepping her bounds, even though she had never intended to do that in the first place.

"I'll figure out a way," he told Rogue. "I mean it. I've had enough experience with these to figure it out." Maybe he was a bit insistent, but he needed the hope.

Then the conversation, and the thoughts behind their words, began to move back into teenage-girl territory - a subject Peter didn't want to be familiar with. He moved back to the desk and pulled up a room key, tossing it over to Rogue. "Kitty can show you where your room is." He sent a quick message for Max to take over at the desk. "I'm gonna go look for a pair of gloves. Rogue?" He gave her a smile. "Welcome to the Hyperion."

Then he headed up the stairs towards his room.
