This was wrong, very wrong. The young woman of a grey age between budding sixteen and twenty years old walked by herself, staring like a deer caught by highlights the strange buildings of the vicinity. The structures she couldn’t recognize as anything she had ever spotted in István or the Empire. They were twisted, narrow and completely unaesthetic. And the smog in the air was displeasing. She coughed twice, adjusting her sensitive nose to the stench of Los Angeles atmosphere.
At least it was nighttime as it was when she and Esther left the hotel holding hands. As soon they walked together by the door, she had felt vertigo and in heartbeat, she found herself completely elsewhere: it didn’t look like István and she couldn’t find Esther nowhere she looked.
Shahrzad had to admit that whatever was placed in her Aqua Vitae must have been exceptionally strong to have her Methuselah senses disoriented. But she found herself worry and angry at the idea that Esther could be in danger and a captive of that corrupted bishop just like her family!
I won’t allow myself to be weak again! she thought, gnashing her fangs and continued her path across the small alleys. It was then when she heard a loud cry. She didn’t understand the language, but a scream for help carried dread and desperation that was beyond any idiomatic barrier.
The Countess rushed in the scene. The source was a young woman, younger than Esther, surrounded by two men. Or what she thought were men… There was something on their faces that was completely monstrous! There was another man, no more than a boy, lying dead on the floor with punctured wounds into his flesh.
“Enough! Leave her alone!” she exclaimed aloud in Hungarian, pushing her way to shield the trembling girl. The two things seemed surprised for a moment then leered at her too, Shahrzad took this second to ready herself for battle. She didn’t know what they were saying, they spoke a language she hadn’t learned in her life, nor what was the nature of the creatures circling closer, but she looked at the teenager shaking behind her and knew she couldn’t walk out from this.
When one leaped at her, Shahrzad knocked him out with a swift kick on the gut.
