STATUS: In Progress
Katara needed some time to clear her mind and come to terms with all that had happened recently. She was taking the disappearance of both Veronica, and Zuko, extremely hard. She and Veronica were friends - one of the few the young waterbender had made since arriving here - and she had really begun to care for Zuko deeply. With both of them out of the picture she was feeling even more alone than before. In fact, if it weren't for the loyalty she felt toward Angel, she likely would have left the Hyperion by now. It was just too hard to be there, knowing that she may never see those she cared about again.
She had considered contacting Toph to see if the other girl wanted to do something, but had decided against it. Toph was wonderful, a true friend and always good for a laugh, but Katara didn't want to forget about her problems. She wanted to come to terms with them. So after wandering the streets in what would be the early morning hours, she found herself at the beach.
A smile curved her lips as she made her way across the sand and stood at the surf, looking out at the waves as they crashed against the shoreline. When everything else was falling apartn, the one thing Katara could count on was the ocean to stay the same. It was comforting to her, reminding her of home. She missed her home, her friends and family. It made her heart hurt to think about her brother, and Aang, and her father, and everyone else she'd left behind.
Noticing movement out of the corner of her eye, she turned her head and glanced downward. Her smile brightened a bit at the sight of the small, baby crab running in a zigzag across the sand. It was trying to find the water but was having trouble. A closer glance showed the reason. Apparently it had lost an eye, and the other one was barely open - filled with some sort of black goo that Katara couldn't identify.
Dropping into a crouch, she placed her hand against the beach and allowed the crab to scurry into her palm. Slowly, carefully, she brought the creature closer to her and, using her free hand, summoned a small bit of water. Bending with one hand was tricky but she managed to clear the goo away within a few moments and heal the damage to the other, useless eye so the crab could at least see out of it. Then she moved to the water's edge and gently set it back down.
"Go along home now," she urged softly, her brilliant blue eyes filled with sorrow. "This place isn't safe for you. The people here..."
She sighed, her shoulders slumping. "They'll hurt you," she finally managed in a near-whisper. "And they won't think twice about it." She was speaking more about herself now, but she didn't care. After all, there wasn't anyone around to hear her. Right?
