Merlin had been seeing a few ghosts lately. Namely, his mother, his friend who died, as well as Nimueh. And then the Great Dragon! That wasn't fun. It kept going on how he was a promise beaker, that he came here on purpose so he'd get out of freeing the beast. And now.. well, it was not pleasant what he saw. He was just walking outside for a bit. He was surprised to find a familiar face. A young boy with dark hair and bright blue eyes, wearing clothes like the Druids, complete with the green cloak. He knew that face well. "Mordred." It was spoken as a statement, not a question. And quite seriously.
Mordred just stared back at him. Like he knew a big secret and there was nothing he could do to change it. Like staring through his soul. 'Emrys.' Not spoken. It was imparted by thought alone.
"What are you doing here?" Merlin asked, glancing about cautiously.
You promised, Emrys, the boy sent to his mind. I nearly died because of you. So much for your word and honor.
"But.. look, can you talk like a normal person and not like that?" Merlin was getting uncomfortable. "And stop looking at me like that when you do it? Because to be honest, you're acting very creepy. I bet even the other Druids are creeped out by you. They probably all sleep with one eye open, with you around."
Mordred glared at that. Not amused in the slightest. "Fine," he spoke with a sigh. "Now tell me why you are against me.. before I get cross."
"I was told you'd kill Arthur," Merlin explained, "and that you and I are different. And that I should let you die. But.. I did come for you.."
Mordred glared. "You should have let me die, then. But that was your folly, young one. You cannot stop fate, you will fail against destiny. And we are different. But you broke your word. I will not forget that, Emrys."
"Young one?" Merlin scoffed with a smirk. "Funny. Yeah, have you looked in a mirror? You're shorter than me. Maybe you can go climb a tree with the other kids. Ohh, but wait. Can't.. you might scare them off too."
Mordred started to walk closer to him. The wind blew around them more fiercely. "Emrys.. I am not amused.. at all." He was a foot away now.
Merlin had a feeling he was going to regret his jests. So he braced himself, prepared to fight if he had to. He wasn't sure how to handle it. But maybe if he got inside the Welcome Center, he'd be safe. He was certainly contemplating that at the moment. "Look, I'm sorry. But I did come for you! The dragon said we were as different than night and day."
"We are," Mordred said, keeping his gaze on him. "I have just as much power as you.. perhaps more. You should not trust everything a dragon says. They can be... manipulative. You have no idea the true greatness of your power. But I do know mine. You will fail."
"No.. no, I won't. The dragon said mine and Arthur's destinies are united." Merlin shook his head, tensing up as the boy drew closer, the wind picking up more. "I don't know his angle, really. But I do know he was right about that. When Uther falls, or passes. When that happens.. Arthur will be king, then magic can return again..."
Mordred paused, then seemed to.. chuckle? That was new. "The world is not that naive. It won't wait for that. And besides, this is a different world. One that you'll have no place in. As Arthur does not."
