Damien was in his office at work. He was pleased with the renovations. It looked as good as it had before, not much outward difference. But there was lead inside all barriers in the room. All four walls, the ceiling, floor, even the double wooden doors had lead inside. The section outside the windows had cameras hidden inside. Nanotechnology was truly wonderful. But he had little time to be happy. Even here, there was a mild stench of lavender. Not as much as there was at home. But still a little hint of it. Enough for him to take notice every few minutes. He was also a bit paranoid as he spoke on the phone to people, as he typed on his computer. It was almost like someone was watching him. Or was about to say something in his ear. But it did not happen. Still didn't help him much, though.
He sighed yet again, looking up from his papers. There was a voice. A young voice. "Boy, you sure are hitting the bottom of the barrel now. Giving up so easily?" He stared. But saw no one. It spoke again, "Can't even see what is right in front of you. How can you expect to protect your own.. when you are like that? Hmm, doofus?"
Damien paused, tensing up with nervousness. "Mark? Marky, is.. is it you? I'm.. I.." There was a banging sound, but nothing vibrated, there wasn't a dent in anything. Not his desk, wall, or monitor. It said, "Guess again!" In about a minute, as Damien looked up in shock, he saw the form of what was supposed to be his future son in a possible timeline. Jakob Thorn.
Except, he wasn't wearing his usual colors of blue, red, green, white, or whatever he put on that day. He was dressed in all black, in simple jeans and shirt. And there was this other thing. Something about the eyes. The way he was looking at the CEO. Almost like he knew a secret, and there was a slight hardness to the stare amidst amusement. He spoke again. "I mean, pool halls? Seriously?" He shook his head. "And here I thought you wanted to save me, to save your only son. I can only wonder what Delia or Alexander would think if they saw you again."
"I know, I know.. it.. but it's complicated," Damien said quickly. "I was shown what happened, he did tell me a couple things. But not enough. I only saw the event itself. You don't get it, I need more! There is a goddamn file on my drive at home. Triple-encrypted. I sure as fuck didn't add it there, and I am the only one who used it."
"Excuses, excuses," the boy said. "You should do it yourself. And before you fill me with more BS, of course you didn't train for it in school, you don't have a degree. But you're Damien. You can do anything. Make anything happen. You can make it open itself to you. Like you can do with people. Which you haven't done lately."
"OR," Damien said, his voice rising, "I could make it worse! I could corrupt the file. Or the computer will fry up like last time because maybe I wasn't careful enough or used too much of my power." He paused, as though seeing something else that escaped him previously. "What's with the clothes? Why.. it's just, you never wore it all.."
The boy laughed. "Maybe I realized who I am. Who we are. You lied to me. But given who your father is, can't say I'm too surprised about it. Guess it's just one more way for you to fuck it all up. Marion was right about you from the beginning. But of course.. no one in your family ever lasts very long around you.. do they?"
Damien gasped, blinked a few times. "What is this. What.. who are.." He was quite uncomfortable. He suspiciously stared at him. Grabbed his keys off the desk and then tossed it at the child. The keys went right through him. "I knew it! You're just an illusion, another spirit! Why are.. why did you come?"
"You know." Jakob stared. "But if I was flesh.. damn. Guess you're not above hurting anyone, even your own. Like all the others." He laughed. "You actually believed in my last words. You believed it.."
"And I meant mine!" Damien shouted at him, standing up now. "You can't hurt me. I just proved it."
The young one shook his head. "Wish I could say the same for me. But we both know, right? We know what we are and what we will have to do. After all.. I am my father's son. Just like you." He added, smiling with mock glee as he clapped his hands together, "Ohh, Daddy, I want to be just like you when I grow up!!"
Damien squinted, a pause between them. Of course this was his son. Father's son, since he was born to him.. or might be. "Don't say that. You really don't want to be exactly like me. I don't even know what I'm going to be." He did, in some part. But not lately. He had been so sure before.
The boy sighed, shaking his head a few times. He saw the chair and climbed up on it, now standing eye level with Damien. Or maybe he was floating, but using the chair to make it seem visually convincing. "You're not hearing me. Still not getting it? Damn, you are slow. I guess Bart was right, after all, usually is." Seeing the glare then, he smirked at the victory. "Oh! Bet you want to hurt him for that mouth. Like choking the life from him. From everyone who crosses you. Like you want to hurt me.. come on, make me shut up. Do it.. you know you wanna admit it.."
Damien stared. "I.. I.." His gaze hardened. "Fuck, what do you want from me?? Why are you doing this? Please tell me."
"I will." Jakob grinned, looking happy that he was now as tall as the man. "It's like I said: I am my father's son. But as I also said, you're not hearing me, so let me clarify it further. I am my grandfather's grandson."
"You.. you.." Damien looked down, not wanting to even look at him now. This couldn't be him. It was like the opposite of what he had remembered about this child. The complete opposite. It was worse than anything he had seen. He felt anger well up in him. He opened his eyes, reaching to grab him by the shirt and hold him up closer. "I'll show you-" His hands went through him. Then the young boy was gone, though there was a hint of laughter in the air. And then there was silence.
He looked down at his hands. They were shaking uncontrollably. The words, everything this particular being had aid.. it was repeating in his mind again and again. He slowly made his way back and literally fell back in his seat. He just stared at the wall. It would seem as though he struggled with something, like there was something he wanted to speak.. but no words came. He instead heaved back with sigh, staring up blankly. He should probably do something. Call someone, maybe check a file from his cabinet. But he didn't. He just sat in silence, shoving his shaking fingers deep into his pockets.
