Ruby had kept herself busy all day, it had been the only way she figured she wasn’t going to go completely insane waiting on tenderhooks to see if it had been a one off, if it had been the city screwing with everyone like it had been. She hadn’t been able to put rock salt anywhere but she’d found iron. It was something. A weapon against the thing plaguing her and she wondered why she had assumed it wouldn’t work before. She knew the lore as well as anyone. So she'd kept herself busy and had sent Cas out for eggs, She was being very normal. She was actually going to cook when he came back. Ghosts be dammed. She was just gonna get on.
But it wasn’t Azazel when the voice came, No this time it was feminine, teasing, mocking. Cold with the wisdom of ages behind it. But lilting and childlike too. Had they waited for the one time in the whole night and day and next night Cas hadn't been with her, were they that sentient.
“Lilith” she said hand shaking holding the iron bar.
“Put that down,” Lilith told her, stepping forward “We’re just going to have a little chat. You know I can’t hurt you, Azazel would have broken you in two if we’d been able to do that wouldn’t he?” she told her with a giggle. It was true as well, Ruby had reasoned that if she’d been able to be hurt there was no way Azazel would have let her forget the betrayal. But that didn’t mean she wanted to hear what the bitch had to say.
Lilith stepped easily out of the way of the bar when Ruby swung it and shook her head. “You didn’t put any real effort in did you. But thats your problem of late isn’t it. All your efforts and you’re still pining for a sad little human thing as ‘friendship’. What did you expect to happen Ruby, You’d say sorry and all would be forgiven and he’d be confiding again, laughing, joking, taking you out for treats like the little pet you let them all make you into while you were learning to enjoy the life your lies had built?”
“Shut up. Just go...”
“You had them all didn’t you. The big family, the friends, People that treated you like a real live girl. They let you stay in their house, the girlfriend, she trusted you. Called you friend. You had it made, but just like you always do Ruby you let the lies overwhelm everything else. Did you miss it when it started to fall apart, when John said he’d never trust you, when you lost Faith’s backing, she’d betrayed enough people in her time hadn’t she Ruby, you assumed she’d understand, help you maybe? Even the boy...even he walked away. The trust of children’s a beautiful thing. I should know. When did you realise what you were losing everything? Did you realize at all?”What did you expect from them?. And then finally Sam walked away for good. And make no mistake it is for good.
“You’re wrong”
“Right, of course, the precious future you’re clinging to. If you left tomorrow he wouldn’t care. And I’m sure the Angel would get over it, he got used to being second in your affection didn’t he. He could find someone else. Some other demon project. Should we see about Meg?”
“Shut up!”
“Oh we’re just getting started my little whore” she told her stepping closer seemingly unafraid of the iron in Ruby’s hand, Ruby understood why, she could barely keep her grip on it..
“You lost him, and I think Azazel had a point, Castiel’s obviously just keeping you around as a novelty. Or maybe to keep an eye on you. What do you even think he means to you?.”
“Everything” she told her, trying to tighten her grip on the bar.
“You can say that, but even he knows how much you crave any scrap of attention Sam throws your way. Eventually he will tire of it. Or maybe Sam will just give up on you like he wants to, walk away. His life is better without you in it, don’t you see that. He’s happier. He doesn’t want or need you back in his life, he has everything he needs and that will never include a lying disgusting little tramp like you, and this....this scraping for chances, begging. Its beneath even you Ruby and honestly, I didn’t think there was a lot that was beneath you. Now drop the bar.”
Damn her,
The bar fell from her fingers with a clatter and Lilith immediately moved in closer still, the face of the poor woman she’d grabbed for the task twisted into a mocking sneer.
“Tomorrow you’re going to meet us. Alone, Ruby. Because you owe us that. We can’t touch you, we just want to talk. But just to you. If you don’t...well would you like us to pay Sammy a visit. Your angel?, What about the little boy?”
“I’m not doing anything. Because that house’ll be rocksalted all to hell and Cas knows everything about me. There isn’t a thing you can tell him that’ll stop him loving me.”
“Mmm, I don’t think you’ll take that risk. I think you’ll come, on the off chance that Sam will find out and be pleased with you for defending his family. He won’t. And I’m sure there’s something we can tell your Celestial, any of our little stories from when Dean was cracking in hell. I let you watch sometimes remember. I was good to you. Does he know how happy you were the day he broke, how eager to get back to Sammy”
The thought had crossed her mind and she hated Lilith all the more for it. She already knew she’d go, however long they stayed she had to keep these two back from the people they’d hurt. The people she’d helped them hurt.
“Yes”
Lilith raised an eyebrow, and Ruby knew the look, knew it well.
“Yes Boss” she said deferentially and Lilith nodded pleased, stepping back a few paces, regarding the shaking demon with some disdain.
“Just looking at you, You actually could have been someone. I was giving my very life so you could get the glory of freeing Him. But you couldn’t even do that could you. No you had to let yourself be tamed. Frankly its hilarious. Or would be if it hadn’t cost us everything. But seeing you like this, seeing how pathetic you’ve become. Oh Ruby its almost worth it”
No one could make her feel as small as Lilith could. In hell even when she’d given Lilith her body to get to Dean she’d still broken her, Loyal already and she’d broken her again just for kicks. And Ruby had let her because that was the done thing, Because saying no to Lilith was the worst anyone could do. And here she’d done that, she’d stood with the Winchesters cause Sam hadn’t been ready. At least that was the excuse she’d told herself. She’d feared him killing Lilith, its why she hadn’t pushed it when it was to be Dean, She hadn’t known what Sam killing Lilith would have done and she hadn’t been ready to take that risk.
But it had been the catalyst too, Sam had started to ask about training, and they’d begun down a path they’d found the end of half a year before. And since then he had barely acknowledged her but to yell.
“Are those tears” said Lilith moving back in highly amused, “Oh Ruby...really. Maybe that vampire is right and you are obsessed, did we make you that way? Maybe that was the mistake, entrusting the fate of the world to a pit whore. Should have gotten Meg to try again”
“No.”
“To the tears or the obsession or to Meg. You need to be clear”
“I’ll be alone tomorrow. I promise I will be. Just leave everyone else alone. Its me you’re angriest at.”
“Its not going to be easy. The things you have to hear.”
“I know” she said and bowed her head slightly, the action seeming to please Lilith.
“I’ll leave you be for now. But understand me Ruby. It will get worse if you disobey. You should remember how it works.”
Ruby did remember. And she’d take the lesson as given. She’d go. Because she had to. Because even if he never knew, even as much as loosing the friendship still gnawed at her insides every single day, she’d never stop protecting Sam, even from things like this.
"I'll be there"
She looked up and no one was there.
She leaned against the wall eyes dark and furious and scared too.
