Who: Bruce and Terry
What: They have a Christmas tree!
When: Early evening
Where: Wayne Manor
Rating: TBA
The manor hadn’t seen a real, honest to God Christmas tree in a long time. Alfred wouldn’t have gone through the trouble of seeing one brought in and erected in its traditional spot when nobody would be around to appreciate it and Bruce, as a teenager, had always looked at the festive lights and the decorations with a nagging sense of emptiness. The Holidays had reminded him of his mother descending graceful as air down the stairs in a gown and jewels, smelling of perfume that turned her child giddy and excited for Christmas. It reminded him of his father in a tux, sneaking him small gifts when his wife’s attention was elsewhere. Being bothered by memories that were thin as vapors, unable to be grasped, had discouraged and alienated him.
Having Terry around gave him reason to not be taunted by flashbacks of things that he would never get back. Terry was young and separated from Gotham and from his family and Bruce was set on not seeing him grieve for the things left behind anymore than he absolutely had to. Taking care of him was his greatest aspiration. Bruce had spent many of his holidays missing the dead. Terry could reduce himself to that too, but he wasn’t keen on watching it happen and it wouldn’t if he had anything to say about it.
The tree filled the room with the aroma of pine. Bruce stood back to watch Dante timidly sniff at the foreign but familiar object that had been dropped down into his house unexpectedly. Pressing himself in too close, the scent that met him made the younger dog sneeze and Ace groaned quietly on the floor. He wasn’t as curious but Bruce thought that he might decide to inspect the tree once they were all away and not looking. On the arm of one of the chairs sat the cat, swinging her tail back and forth, eyeing the wall and seeming unimpressed until she stood, stretched and took a leap in the direction of the tree.
As if she’d done it a million times before, she stood on her hind legs to swat at the branches. He narrowed his eyes at her in warning. “Don’t even think about climbing that.”
