Summary: Samara discusses family, recent events and her career change with her brother.
"Uncle Benji, can I watch the telly?" Jason asked excitedly the second they stepped out of the floo. Samara brushed some of the ashes off his shoulders before he was running away from her toward his uncle and then proceeded to brush her own clothing off as well. "Of course, mate. There's a match on at noon, you can watch it if you like," Benji replied, picking his nephew up and hugging him tightly before tossing him playfully onto the sofa in front of the television which elicited a giggle from the child. Samara shook her head. "I don't know why you got one of those things. Mother would be furious," Samara regarded the television with a bit of suspicion, watching her son navigate the remote with easy precision - it was obvious Benji had been letting him do this a lot. Samara's brother had taken Muggle Studies in school and their father had been quite cross about the whole thing, but seeing as Benji had been sorted into Gryffindor it had been assumed from the start that he was going to be a bit different than the rest of the family. "Mother is cross when the Minister wears robes she dislikes. I don't pay her much mind." Benji lead his sister to the kitchen island, leaving his nephew to his own devices in front of the television so that they could talk. "Butterbeer, Mara?" "Thank you," Samara said and sat down in a bar stool at the island. "How's work?" "Not bad. There was a possible break in at Lavender Brown's flat yesterday. We had to-" "So you were assigned to that then? I saw it in the Prophet," Samara interrupted him. "Yeah I'm sure you did. What you didn't see was that it was broken into this morning around 2am. We saw a woman fleeing the scene." Samara lowered the butterbeer bottle from her mouth, looking at her brother questioningly. "Woman? You don't really think it's Pandora Zurlo, do you?" "I have to admit I thought Brown was probably off her rocker and we were wasting our time but Macmillan is a stickler for the rules, taking all calls seriously even if they are completely far-fetched. But she does match the description. Well okay, we didn't see her face, but she has the ginger hair - and she was fleeing through the fireplace where Brown said she saw her the first time." Samara frowned at him. This wasn't necessarily good news. Lavender Brown had the dream database which meant that someone was already after it just as she and Eli had suspected. "So what did this witch break in for?" "When the inventory was taken the missing item was the database of nightmares that Brown had been broadcasting on the journals." "Brilliant," Samara replied, sarcasm laced in her voice. "What?" Benji asked, looking at her quizzically. "Mara, you didn't send your dream to her, did you?" Samara gave him a hard look. "You're seriously berating me for that when the DMLE has been asking us to come forward and let them know if we've been having the nightmares?" "That's different-" "It's exactly the same, Benji! If the murderer can get that list, she can get a hold of the DMLE's list too! Anyone who is stupid enough to put their name down on one of those lists is just letting the murderer know that they've got one of these memories and they are in need of being killed already!" Samara covered her mouth instantly, forgetting that Jason was in the other room, but it didn't really matter since he already knew about it all anyhow. "I didn't give my name to Lavender Brown, I just gave a description of my nightmare." Her brother's shoulders slumped a bit, apparently in relief. "The DMLE can offer protection to those who have the nightmares." "There's no way that you can protect that many people. You haven't the manpower nor do you even know how many memories there even are at this time. You're delusional." She and her brother had always been rather frank with one another as beating around the bush wasn't really a Capper family trait. "And I suppose you and Eli have an answer already?" While Benji was never outright rude to Eli, their personalities had always clashed violently and Benji had never been a fan of the way Eli did things, said things or even the way he heard him talk to Samara and Jason. He just didn't understand how things worked between Samara and Eli and while she'd tried to explain it to him before, he had never truly understood. "No, we don't. If someone had an answer I'm sure they'd share with the rest of the wizarding world." This was not true at all, but she knew better than to share their secrets before they were even complete. If they were to find an answer and Benji happened to be having nightmares, well she would deal with it then, but for now he didn't need to know anything. "Yeah, right," he said, not sounding convinced. He knew them better than she thought. "Uncle Benji, have you ever played football?" Jase's voice drifted into the kitchen. Benji laughed. "I've tried it a few times, Jase. We can play sometime if you want. It's not as excited as quidditch, I'm afraid." "Brilliant!" the boy's voice trilled and then he was silent again. Samara took a long drink from her butterbeer before saying, "I'm going back to work, Benji." Benji's brow furrowed. "What? I thought you weren't going back until Jase was eleven. Why now? Did Eli ask you to?" Samara rolled her eyes. "It's nothing to do with Eli," she said, but this was a lie. Eli had been the one to suggest it and though she had found the idea absurd at first, the more she thought on it, the more it sounded like a good idea. She was getting stir crazy in the house every day and though it would pain her to have someone else looking after Jason, she would be alright in the end. "It's not as if I need to work, but I-I want to. I think I need to do it for myself, to keep myself sane." "Mara, is everything alright between you two? You're not going back because you're having problems with Eli are you?" Yep, that was the Capper family - don't worry about asking personal questions because there was no such thing as 'personal.' "Benjamin! No! I told you it has nothing to do with Eli! For Merlin's sake, would you stop harping on my husband? We've been married for seven years now, I would think that you would have learned to deal with it by now! Plus we have a son whom you happen to adore, so stop already!" "Alright, alright! I'm done! So who's going to look after Jase? You're not seriously considering...Mother?" Benji pulled a face like he had just been forced to smell something disgusting. "I wouldn't let her near Jase if she was the last option on earth. She's just been waiting to get her claws into him; I know better than that." "So who then? I'd do it if my schedule allowed. I could still watch him on the few days I do have off if you wanted." Benji was genuine when he said this and Samara was grateful to have him love her son enough to want to help take care of him. "Well, with the extra income - not that we really need it - I am thinking of hiring a nanny. That way Jase doesn't have to leave the house and still gets the personal attentive care I was giving him. And when Eli and I are able to come home we will still be able to see him." Benji was nodding. "Nanny, huh? Well I suppose that could work. Keeps you from having to do the cooking too, yeah?" He grinned at his joke, not knowing that Samara was quite glad about this fact. "I'm going to meet with Astoria soon and see how things are going for her in the Obliviators and see if I can't get in a quite easily and quickly." "Sounds like you're ready then. Well, you were a brilliant Obliviator, Mara, I'm not going to tell you not to do it. It was your calling and you deserve to go back when you feel like it's time so if that's now then I'll help you out however you need." Samara stood up and walked over to her brother, giving him a hug. "Thank you, Benji. I'm so glad we have you to rely on." Benji squeezed her and kissed her on the forehead. "I'll always be here for you and Jase, Mara. You know that." He smiled. "Better go get Jase away from the telly." |
