18-year-old Takaki Yuya is pretty much straight off the boat (or plane, anyway) from Osaka, Japan. An only child, he has come to LA on a student visa to attend UCLA, majoring in Communication Studies in hopes of one day breaking into advertising.
Takaki lives on-campus, in the dorms, so his bills are minimal: food, pocket money, etc. His parents pay his tuition and book fees, though he wishes to be as independent as possible, and save them money. To that end, his first order of business after getting settled in was to find a job. His father owns a fairly popular nightclub back in Osaka, so Takaki turned to the only thing he knew he could do, given his poor English: bartending.
After several attempts, he was able to find a job bartending at a small nightclub not too far from his dorm. His boss isn't the most honest man in the world, hiring Takaki despite him not being legally of age to bartend in California, not really caring since he could get cheap labor and pay in cash.
Takaki's English might not be that great, though he can manage in most situations, but his smile and personality make up for it. His pay may be low, but he makes up with that in tips, often bringing home $50-$100 a night in tips alone.
Takaki has no pets, since they aren't allowed in the dorms. In his spare time, he can be found lounging in his dorm room or somewhere around campus, studying for his ESL class in hopes of improving his English.
