It was strange how this area of New Jersey was so familiar to her when she'd never been here before. She knew the exact turnings she was supposed to take, which was useful considering she couldn't exactly program 'Gotham City' into her GPS. It was still a little weird to know that if she took the next turn then she should be able to see Gotham for the first time. If it even existed. It was stupid to think that a fictional city would suddenly show up out of thin air and Sarah knew that she was setting herself up for some serious disappointment, but the radio signals had all come from this area and they were either from Gotham or were made to sound like they were from the city. It was a lot of trouble to go to for a laugh, and she couldn't shake the feeling that something was going on. She just didn't know what. At least not yet. After the turning everything began to make sense. An insane, I must Be Dreaming, kind of sense. There was a sight that she thought would be there, but never really expected to see. It was real. Gotham was real and right there. "Oh fuck." James could not understand why he couldn't be the person driving. Yes, it wasn't his car and yes, his car driving was a bit on the sketchy side, but they were off on a grand Titansesque adventure and he couldn't drive. Trying to put the niggling annoyance out of his mind, he tried to focus on something much more exciting. Transmissions and white noise indicating the arrival of a city was pretty exciting. When that city was Gotham, it made his heart rate began to rise steadily. This was his home. No, this was Jason's home, but it felt like home and it felt like tingling all over and then Sarah swore and he had to make sure they hadn't started doing it and he just managed to have a delusion. Out there, he could see the bridge. He could see the vague outlines of Arkham. He could even see the fucking awful outline of the funhouse on Amusement Mile. "Shit!" Sarah's hands tightened around the steering wheel and she had to force herself to take a few deep breaths. "Am I dreaming?" She asked, glancing out of the corner of her eye to look at James. "Because if I am, this isn't as weird as if I'm awake." She kept driving though, focused on getting into the city as quickly as possible without getting pulled over. "Um. So. Where do you want to go first?" Leaning over, James gave his wife a sharp pinch on her arm to see if she responded. If she squealed, she was probably awake. If she wasn't awake, he was a figment of her imagination and the real him couldn't be held accountable. "So, you awake?" "Ow!" Sarah squealed, and leaned over to hit his thigh. Okay, so she wasn't dreaming and that meant Gotham was here and she couldn't wipe the grin off her face if she wanted to. This was just... amazing. "Manor first?" She asked. They were definitely awake. That worked out! That meant that Gotham was there. That meant they could go anywhere. They could go to Babs' house and look at her bra's. They could go Stephs and look at her bra's. Oh, check it out, he did feel more excited about that. It was good to know he and his inner murderous vigilante were starting to sync up. "Manor," James breathed, with a stab of excitement hitting him in the gut. The cave, the car, his room....Jason's room. Not his room. Oh, whatever, it's Wayne Manor. "Step on it, Girl Wonder!" Sarah sped up, trying to get into the city as soon as possible. "Stepping on it!" She insisted. It didn't take them long to arrive in Gotham. The streets were empty and dark, which wasn't exactly weird for Gotham but it wasn't normal either. Considering the city had just shown up out of nowhere maybe normal was asking for too much. The one good thing about the place being deserted? She could drive as fast as she liked to get to the manor. "This is... wow." James couldn't argue with that sentament. Darkness lit by neon and street lamps and dead silence filled their road, but it didn't matter because his heart was absolutely in his throat. This was their city and it was right here. He kind of wanted to stroke the sides of the houses as they sped through the suburbs towards old Gotham. She must have been taking the Kane bridge to go out towards the Manor in Bristol. There was a tight feeling to his stomach to know they could take a left and there would be Crime Alley and Leslies clinic and...it was an overload. "We should just....hurry, before I get overstimulated." Not something he ever expected to say to the little woman. "Overstimulated?" Sarah smirked. "I didn't think that was possible, babe." There was so much to see and do, so many places she wanted to go to that if she thought about it instead of focusing on driving she'd probably be a little overstimulated too. Instead she tried to become a little single minded and focused on getting to Bristol as quickly as possible. Thank god there was no traffic, or it'd feel like forever before they got there. "I'm taking the cave entrance. Let's just hope Steph's codes work." She said as they crossed the bridge into the nice part of Gotham. "If they don't, I think I remember where to avoid." There was a good good chance that Tim had gone ahead and changed them as he'd promised, the little freak and oh fucking hell, was it ever hard to get out of Jason's headspace in this city. James cleared his throat and just stared out the window at the eerie streets. It was really creepy for there to be no sirens, no guns and traffic on the streets. It was as if Gotham had lost it's core. At least they were making record time - when was the last time you could get out to Bristol in only twenty minutes? "Let's hope we're in the right era." "I don't even want to think about having to break into this place." Sarah said. That would probably not go well for her, she was still having a little trouble after being shot last month and she wasn't sure she had the ability to fight her way through one of Bruce's security systems. There was no reason to worry though, entering her code at the entrance of the Batcave didn't lead to anything going completely insane and the doors opened, allowing her to drive in. This was just amazing. The whole cave was here for them to explore, all the cars, bikes, the computer and even the costumes standing in their glass cases. "Oh... oh... wow." Sarah said, speechless. "Dying would be easier," Especially in Gotham, but considering Steph did kind of die in Gotham, James thought it best not to bring that part up. Apparently, he didn't need to worry. The vague feeling of nausea gave way to excitement in the pit of his stomach. This was beautiful. There was no other word for it. This was where everything happened. That was the levels, the levels that hadn't been here when Jason was growing up but... "Hey, Girl Wonder," He called over, waving at her to get her attention. "What's with the Terry costume case?" Sarah got out of the car and headed over to them, pressing her fingers gently against the cold glass. It felt solid and real, not surprising but she wanted to check. "Maybe it's a mesh up? Sarah offered as an explanation. "Different eras in one place? I don't know." There were so many questions that they wouldn't have the answers to, it would take hours to list them all. She tried not to look at Jason's case, and instead turned to James. "What do you want to explore first?" She asked with a smile. "The cars? The actual manor?" "Well, we got Abe. Terry didn't have Abe," James pointed out, pointing over to the far corner where the giant penny lived. He felt like jumping up and down but that wouldn't be very hardcore, stoic batfamily kid now, would it? Unlike Sarah, he wandered straight over to the case. It felt sort of wrong to put his hand on it, like Alfred was going to swoop out from the back of the dark areas and scold him and make him clean his prints off of it. Then he decided fuck that, it's his case with his costume. He'll touch it if he wants to touch it! "I never fitted in that, did I?" He murmured to himself, before becoming aware Sarah had spoken. "Huh?" Sarah frowned and walked over to him, "You okay?" She asked, putting an arm around his waist anyway. "It's, um, small." She'd never thought about how young Jason must have been when he was killed, it was difficult enough thinking about Steph like that sometimes. "Look, we should probably go somewhere else. Look at something else." "Yeah, especially in the panties," James said, laughing a little uncomfortably. She had a point, though. They should probably go somewhere else. What could they do - go check out the main city by using the computer? Check out the costumes? Take a spin in the batmobile? Join the bat high club? Go upstairs and snoop in the rooms? That sounded a hell of a lot more fun. "Do you want to go snoop in the rooms?" He wondered if they kind find anything interesting. Sarah grinned, thank god he wasn't about to go all Tim at the case! "I kinda want to snoop around Tim's room, is that wrong?" How many opportunities would she get to poke around her sorta-ex's bedroom? "And yours! I want to see Jason's stuff and maybe after we can drive by Steph's on the way home?" Yeah, poking around their former lives would be a lot more fun than staring at costumes in cases. Timmy's room. The possibilities there were endless. Knowing the little stalker freak, James reckoned he probably had some of Stephs clothing in there to dissect or smell or take pictures of at CSI angles. The thought bothered him more than he'd like. He had no ties to her beyond the friend of a friend, though she had been Robin so maybe they were just longpants removed. Maybe he did have some claim to jealousy. Or was it Tim he was jealous of? Maybe he wasn't even jealous so much as he missed that there was a part of him that didn't know a part of his wife? This psychobabble had got to stop. Besides, the draw of going and riffling through the articles of another life filled him with a childlike excitement. "We should go get some of our things we don't want Kyle to see," He told her, realising the porn might still be there. That would be awkward. "We can do whatever we want, babe." Sarah said, and leaned in to kiss his cheek. "Take stuff Kyle won't notice, jump on the beds, fuck in the library. Is there a library?" Steph had never been invited over for tea at the Wayne's, and her grand tour was pretty limited to the cave and a couple of rooms in the manor. It'd be great to poke around the inner Bruce Sanctum, and get to know the parts of the Batfamily that she'd never been able to see up close and personal before. "The Batworld is our oyster." She joked, and headed up to the manor and out of the Batcave. "Come on, Boy Wonder!" |
