Owl/RP: Dinner?
When: January 12-13, 2000
Character/Pairing: Theo, Pansy, Millie
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: Pansy and Theo owl Millie about going to dinner sometime. Dinner the next night, with Terence Higgs along, as well.

Dear Millie,

It was so good to see you again after so long! It's nice to see that you're doing so well for yourself. Theo and I are really looking forward to going to dinner with you so we can catch up properly.

I am sorry that it has taken us a couple days to get back to you about going, but it's been slightly more troublesome to work out a babysitter than Theo anticipated. However, we've worked it out and would love to go tomorrow evening, if that's acceptable.

Please check your schedule and let us know as soon as possible so that we can set a reservation.

Your friends,
Theo and Pansy

Dear Pansy,

Tomorrow evening is fine. I look forward to catching up to you two as well--it has been so long. Sorry about the inconvenience of finding a babysitter, but I'm glad you found one.

Owl the details of time and place, and I'll be there with Terence.

Your friend,

Millicent

Dear Millicent,

Excellent! Oh, not to worry on the babysitter front. We've worked it all out.

I do hope that you and Terence like Thai food. Theo says that he knows of an excellent restaurant called The Blue Garden just on the outskirts of London that he's been wanting to go out to again for ages. Please let us know if Thai won't work for either of you. Otherwise, we'll just plan to meet at 5:30, if that's all right?

Always,
Pansy

Dear Pansy,

Thai is great. I think I know where that is, so we'll be there at 5:30. See you then!

Til then,

Millicent

Theo was a little nervous about dinner with Millicent. Not that he didn't trust her--he did. The war had forged that trust, the way they'd depended on each other for support through the hard times. And she'd already proved she wasn't about to make a bid for him or needle Pansy into jealousy. If she'd wanted to do that, she probably would have already. It was just the fact that he was having dinner with his girlfriend and a woman he'd had an affair with in school.

He should probably tell Pansy that, sooner or later. Just so if she found out she wouldn't think Theo was keeping it a secret.

Yeah, maybe he'd do that later. Not before dinner, certainly.

He looped an arm around Pansy. THey'd already settled Peter with Mary, an older woman who worked at Flourish and Blotts. In her fifties, comfortably plump and having raised her first family and probably thinking about her second (if she could have more children), she never minded watching Peter while at the store. She treated him like a grandchild almost.

"Ready to go?" he asked his lovely lover. They apparated to the restaurant. It was a nice place, but not too fancy. Casual enough they could chat easily but not too casual so that Terence didn't feel left out.

Millicent and Terence arrived separately but close together in time. They hadn't been there five minutes before Theo and Pansy arrived. Millicent smiled at both of them. "Good to see you," she greeted them.

Pansy was surprisingly excited about going to dinner with Millicent. After Millie had left, she'd finished putting books on the shelves with Peter while thinking things over. She realized that she hadn't been as friendly as she probably should have been. What happened when they were children shouldn't matter. After all, Pansy was hardly exactly the same as she'd been at Hogwarts, much less as she'd been as a young girl. And, it seemed that Millie had gone through a transformation since leaving Hogwarts.

It was only fair that she put away old judgments and get to know who Millie was now. It wasn't like Pansy had a huge circle of friends anymore. It might be quite nice to have a girl friend.

"I am," Pansy answered Theo. When they arrived at the restaurant, Pansy smiled as she looked around, quickly spotting Millie and Terence. She greeted Millie with a hug that was warmer, friendly than the one a couple days ago. "Hello, Millie. Terence, it's lovely to see you again," she said politely, holding her hand out to him. He took it, squeezed it lightly before letting it fall again.

"How have you been?" she asked Millie.

Millicent wasn't quite sure what to expect from this dinner. Her traveling over the past year and a half had helped a lot of the hurt and betrayal she'd felt from Theo at the end of the war, healing some of it at least, and she was lonely. She wanted to make friends, hopefully friends that would last. She was lonely.

Despite some of the problems they'd had in their youth, Millicent wanted to be friends with Pansy. If they both made the effort, she rather thought they could do it--if they put aside the snide comments of the past.

She was surprised at the warmer welcome Pansy gave her, but she returned the hug with the same warmth and a smile. She gave Theo a hug as well while Pansy and Terence shook hands. Most everyone knew Terence--that was his thing, knowing people and putting them in contact with each other. Theo shook his hand firmly. "Good to see you, Terence," he greeted the other man. "How are things going?"

The two men briefly talked inconsequential business as their 'dates' took their arms. It would probably be further discussed later, but social niceties demanded a few words now.

Theo opened the restaurant door, bowing slightly and indicating they go inside. Millie and Terence went first, and he and Pansy followed. A flashbulb went off somewhere in front, and he heard the giggle the heralded Twittering, the bint.

Millie looked back at them with a vaguely questioning look. "Ignore her," he told his little group. "She's just a rag reporter looking for juicy gossip. We don't have any."

"Oh, but Mr Nott..." the reporter, all syrupy voice and blonde (fake?) hair started.

"No comment, Ms Twittering. Please leave us to dine in peace," he said firmly. He noticed Terence looking askance at the reporter, remember Terence's Hufflepuff girlfriend was a reporter, and bit back a smirk; how awkward.

They were ushered (apologetically for the press) to their table and seated with all haste. The waiter looked rather embarrassed by their inconvenience.

"I never knew the press to be quite so... invasive," Millie commented as they sat.

"More so lately," Theo told her. "With all the political unrest and pureblood propaganda."

Pansy took Theo's arm and moved with him as they followed Millie and Terence inside. She raised a derisive eyebrow at the twit reporter. The witch was the worst sort of gossip reporters, and Pansy felt almost sorry for Terence as she realized that his girlfriend was also a gossip columnist. She wouldn't deny that she'd be interested in seeing those fireworks when the scoop comes out. She'd probably be furious to discover through a gossip column that Theo had gone out on what looked very much like a double date with another woman.

As they all took their seat, Pansy noticed Twittering slipping outside and was surprised the woman hadn't made more of a scene. She returned her attention back to her group and smiled sympathetically at Theo's answer to Millie's comment. "Unfortunately, it's true. And some of them seem willing to find stories where there simply isn't one."

A waiter approached them politely, offering to take their drink orders. Only after they'd told him and he left did she pick up her menu to peruse it. She found her favorite dish easily and set the menu aside. Smiling across the table at Millie, she asked, "So have you been able to settle back in yet? Or is it still a bit surreal to be home?"

Terence rather hoped he'd be home in time to catch Kat before Twittering told her that he'd been out with Millicent. He wasn't cheating, he really wasn't--simply doing Millicent a favor. But Twittering had a way with twisting things in the worst of ways, unlike Kat who let whatever she found speak for itself--for good or ill.

"How rude," Millie said with a sniff. It occurred to her that Theo had probably had his hands full of that with his son's very existence, and felt a twinge of guilt over it. But she wouldn't have been able to do anything if she'd stayed, she reminded herself. "The law... oh, nevermind." She huffed out a sigh. Already what she'd seen was not reassuring in the least. She'd already had to go register since arriving back in country.

"Mm, not really," Millie admitted. "It's strange, being back at home again. Papa and Mems," Pansy and Theo would know that that was how she usually addressed her 'mother,' and perhaps that it was the same address she and her siblings used for their 'aunt.' "Have been good, but after being on my own for so long it's a little awkward being under house rules again." Not that she acted out at home, but she was used to a certain measure of independence and not having to inform anyone of her comings and goings.

"I can't imagine living with my parents again," Terence said with a faint shrug. Personally, Theo couldn't imagine it either. His mother had been exacting and his father relatively distant.

Pansy listened, nodding sympathetically as Millie voiced the awkwardness of being back home after living out on her own. Pansy couldn't really relate. Though her mother didn't have much to do with Pansy's life anymore, by Pansy's choice, it didn't change the fact that she still lived at home with her. It made her feel woefully dependent, knowing that Millie and Theo had branched out from their families, yet she hadn't.

Come to think of it, what had she done since leaving Hogwarts? Nothing. She decided to stop those thoughts in their tracks, though. There was no reason to get caught up in the fact that she was unaccomplished. That didn't really matter, not when she had an amazing boyfriend, the sweetest little brother, and hobbies to keep her occupied. Besides, there wasn't much opportunity for her in this new world.

"I'm sure that in time you will all adjust to your return," Pansy said encouragingly. "So, I'm dreadfully curious. What's the most exciting place you traveled to?"

In a way, Theo had branched out--having one's own child to care for made one remarkably independent and dependent at the same time. Take finding a babysitter for tonight, for instance... And with mother in France and father in jail, well... he was the head of the family now, for all intents and purposes.

And now he had Pansy, which made all of it a little easier. He reached over and squeezed her hand, a casual gesture of affection.

"Thanks. I will, I know. I just wish I had my own place." Millie gestured negligently with her hand, dismissing the desire as unimportant. Millie perused the menu with one eye, knowing she'd probably go back to her first choice when the waiter returned.

"Most exciting? Hmmm." She pondered for a moment, twirling a lock of hair with one finger. "I really liked Russia, though I don't know if it was the most exciting, per se. But the Serafims concert I went to was fabulous." Free tickets, too, courtesy of her brother's wife. Awesome. The Serafims were an up and rising wizarding band who might end up called the Weird Sisters of their generation.

"But as a place? Mm. Burma was beautiful, India was exotic. America was... different. I don't really know if I could choose just one place, to be honest. They all have their different perks."

Theo's hand squeezing hers was such a comfort. Whatever she had or hadn't achieved since leaving Hogwarts didn't matter so much, because she had Theo. She'd fallen in love, and what could possibly surpass that? Maybe she'd start to look into other things she might do, but it wasn't a necessity, so she wouldn't worry about it.

Pansy's eyes lit up at the mention of the Serafims. "Oh, they're wicked!" Her eyes narrowed slightly. "Wait a minute. Isn't Abel's wife—Zoe, right?—in the Serafims?" Pansy remembered Millie telling them about her brother getting married to a singer, but she hadn't recognized the name of the band back then. They were significantly more popular now, though, and it seemed like it might have been the same.

Smiling, Pansy said, "Oh, come now, there must have been some place that really stuck out to you."

"Aren't they just?" Millie replied. Wicked cool band, totally. One didn't even have to be a teenager to appreciate them. "Mm, yes. Zoya, Zoe, da, she is one of the main singers." Millie smirked, appreciating that fact and her brother for somehow having the balls to score himself such a hot and awesome wife. She formed a circled with thumb and forefinger and winked through it, one of Zoya's trademarks this year. Oh, and her hair was often bright pink.

"I don't know how Abel didn't it, the conservative lug, but she is very cool. Their daughter, Sable, is, hm, two and a half almost?" And Zoya looked possibly hotter now than before, if public consensus and Abel's opinion were to be believed.

Terence blinked slowly. "Your sister-in-law, huh? Very interesting," he said, looking at Millie speculatively. Millie wasn't completely certain she was pleased or wary because of it.

"That is great," Theo said. Though you might have a hard time getting him to admit it, he liked the Serafims too. It wasn't that long ago they really should have been going to concerts and having a good time. Hell, they weren't that old now, really.

"Mmm. Well... I was only there a couple days, but New Zealand has to be the most beautiful place in the entire world," Millie admitted. "It is just... lovely." She felt lame, trying to describe it, but if there was anywhere she would go to stay longer, it was probably there.

The waiter came over and everyone gave their orders. Though so many things tempted Millie, who truly did love food, she ordered only a modest dish and planned on getting up early to work off any weight it might add.

Pansy managed to contain her excitement, something she'd had a hard time learning growing up. She'd always been far more open with her feelings than the other girls in Slytherin, but she'd found a way to use it to her advantage, and over time she'd managed to learn how to contain herself.

"Oh, that's excellent! She's not much older than Peter, than," Pansy said with a fond smile. Only a moment later did she realize what she'd said in what company at what venue. Keeping her friendly smile on her face, she continued the conversation before anyone could comment on her flub. "Do Able and Sable go on tour with her, then?"

Pansy raised an eyebrow at the way Terence was looking at Millie, hoping that he wasn't thinking of making Twittering's potential scoop truth rather than fabrication. Though Millie knew he had a girlfriend, so she rather hoped she wouldn't go there.

"Oh, I've never been that far," Pansy admitted. "I do hope you took plenty of pictures. I'd love to see the places you went sometime." She was distracted by the arrival of their waiter and went ahead and placed her order. "You must have met so many interesting people abroad...?" Pansy prompted after the waiter left again.

If Millie were honest, she could squee about it all day long. But she hated to be made fun of, and tried not to admit to it when she could unless she knew it were completely mutual. Besides, they were in public.

Ah, Pansy, ever saying things before completely thinking them through. Millie swallowed her extra-wide grin and briefly caught Theo's eye to find that he looked just about how she felt--immensely amused. Millie touched her lips briefly, as if pushing her thoughts back. Terence, of course, missed most of the inside-byplay. If anything, he wouldn't think the comment very untoward--arranged marriages from birth weren't unknown even now.

"Some of the time," Millie said. "Other times, they stay here or on the continent. Zoya manages to be home a lot--international floo makes it very convenient most of the time." One corner of her mouth lifted in a wicked smirk. "She's actually at home with Sable currently. You should come visit soon."

Millie didn't go for people who were attached. Definitely wasn't her thing. Terence was just convenient for the night.

"I have pictures, yes. You should come see them sometime. I'd love to show you some of the things I've picked up." Not to mention a few of the things she'd saved from two years ago from the estate sales.

"Very interesting, very crazy, occasionally strange and often amusing," Millicent agreed, resisting the urge to nibble on the breadsticks that were just delivered. Food was her weak point. Still was. Always would be, especially when anxious, adn she was mildly anxious being the center of attention. "There was this little man, littler than Professor Flitwick, in Portugal. You would think he was madder than a hatter but he remembers every thing he's ever read and can recite you entire chapters if you don't mind listening to his opinions on the subject matter and writing.

"Then there ws this ancient old woman in India. She looked like some sort of shriveled up root, but wizards came to her from all over to have her bless their, ah, fertility. Apparently she is over two hundred, and she had at least twenty children of her own. Just count down the generations and imagine how much family she has now!"

Pansy brushed the embarrassment off. No, it wasn't exactly a politically correct topic, but neither should Theo be made to feel ashamed of Peter. Peter was a wonderful little boy, and it was true that he was close in age to Millie's niece.

"Oh, that must be so nice for them." She couldn't imagine having a family and being away from them for periods of time like Zoya did, but that's why it was Zoya's life, not hers. "That would be nice. I'd love to see the pictures from your travels."

Pansy listened politely, a friendly and interested smile on her face. "Oh, wow, that would definitely be a very large family," she agreed. She wanted children, but she could not imagine having twenty. Their food came after a few more minutes of casual talk.

Terence chuckled. "Bless their... fertility," he repeated softly, obviously amused. He had to say, the social interactions tonight seemed worth the trip out. Watchign two old school 'chums' interact was always interesting.

Once food was delivered, everyone settled into eating, talking about the food and general small talk. Millicent picked at it just a little--just enough for someone observant like Terrence to notice--though she seemed to enjoy it. He filed away the knowledge like he did everything else.

They had barely gotten into the meal when there was a minor disruption at the entrance, and Terence glanced that way with interest and felt a tightening of fear in his gut, though it didn't reflect on his face.

If he wasn't mistaken, those rude men coming in were Aurors. Gods, he hoped they weren't coming for him. No one could know what he'd done, could they? He'd been very careful in covering his tracks.

Millie stirred with unease beside him, though there was nothing she could have done wrong. Theo looked mildly curious as they came toward him, but he obviously felt he had nothing to fear.

Curiosity morphed into consternation as the two men stopped directly behind and beside his chair, forcing Theo to crane his neck at an awkward angle.

"Gentlemen, might I help you?" he asked congenially enough, just a hint of the bother he was feeling showing through--purposefully.

"Theodore Nott, get up. You need to come with us," the older one said coarsely. "We need to ask you some questions."

"Questions?" Theo replied. "I don't know how I can help you, but I'd be happy to try. But is coming to the Ministry truly necessary? We're in the middle of dinner."

"Now." His chair was jerked roughly back a couple of inches.

Now Theo's anger started clouding his face, even as Terence inwardly rejoiced that it wasn't him--and he got to watch the show.

Pansy noticed the looks on Terence and Millie's faces before she heard the disturbance at the entrance behind her. She shifted, turning slightly in her chair so that she could see the men -Aurors?- approaching their table.

Pansy felt her hackles raise as they rudely spoke to Theo and then pulled his chair back a bit. "Excuse me, but as Theodore explained, we are in the middle of the meal. Whatever it is can wait fifteen minutes," she said, politely enough, though her eyes sparked with reigned in fury.

One of the Aurors sneered at her, eying her disdainfully. "Well, in that case, Parkinson, you all can join us at the Ministry." His voice was low and gruff, his eyes daring her to cause a scene. The way things were in their world, she wouldn't be surprised if doing so would land her a stay in Azkaban.

Pansy turned to the waiter who was hovering nearby, watching the action along with most of the patrons. "Excuse me, could we please get our dinner to go, as it seems these men," she sneered the word, "aren't willing to allow us the few minutes it would take to finish our meal."

"Yes, of course, Miss," the waiter said, hurrying away to get the to go boxes. He returned quickly and with a few flicks of his wand, had each of their meals packed and ready for transport. Pansy thanked him politely as their check was settled discretely.

Pansy smiled at Theo as he helped her put her cloak back on, Terence and Millie following suite. "Please," Pansy said simperingly to the Aurors, "do lead the way."
