( For a moment, he is free and wild, a line of light, twisting and jolting through the air. He is shifting, taking form, losing it again, perhaps lost at what he is supposed to be. She struggles to rein him back in, catching him by the tail, trying to force him back into position, and he turns in on himself, stabbing at her, shaping himself into… a dragon? a bear? Something with teeth. He snaps at her, lunging and withdrawing, like an angry dog. )

( Her face is very beautiful: the perfect, moon-round shape seen in old ink paintings. Her hair is smooth and black, shining even in this dim light, lifting from her body in tendrils, pulled by some unseen wind. Her mouth is a small, overripe plum, raw against the white of her face. Her eyes are the wings of ravens. Her lips draw back over yellowed fangs, each as long and thin as a young woman’s pinky, and she pushes off of her rock with her slender arms, the nails making a click-clack sound. She hits the water, winding towards them… )
