This and That * Hope all who celebrate Thanksgiving had a wonderful time spent with family and friends.
* The Girl Child went to the Black Friday sales this morning. At 4:49, while I was doing some serious sleeping, she texted. Scared me to death. Why did she text at that unholy hour, you ask... because she spotted John Travolta at the mall. Jesus. She's a freak.
* The Boy Child had to work today - so no shopping for him. Instead, he gave the Girl a list and his debit card. He gave his sister his fucking debit card. When she was going to a mall. The boy is an idiot. Honestly.
* It's chilly here in the Sunshine State tonight. Lovely thing, that. Right along with the Criminal Minds marathon on A&E.
* And, on a Criminal Minds note, this week's episode killed me. Dead. *pets the CM team* |

D: D: D: ...Look, Captain Jack Harkness, intergalactic manwhore, has done some pretty awful things in his long life. BUT SINCE WHEN DOES HE RAPE PEOPLE? Is there some part of relevant Whoniverse canon that I am totally missing? If so, could someone please tell me what it is, so that I can KEEP MISSING IT? (I mean, aside from that thing with Owen in the first episode of Torchwood. That scene is made of ick. And if you agree, don't google for discussion on it, because half the forum threads are full of guys going "lol, that was funny, you guys are taking it too seriously, I wish I had that stuff." I guess this is the Axe/Lynx demographic.) ...Okay, skimming the fic, the author seems to have gotten the Time Agency mixed up with the Rape Agency, and Jack ("Seth") has had some kind of horrible personality transplant and should be on every Sexual Offenders list ever. 0_o Never mind. I did see the Rape/Non-Con warning, but I saw that it was a Big Bang fic (and therefore long) and assumed it had something to do with the plot/character arc. And that was depressing, so I leave you with this cheering fanart. Current Mood: disgusted |

Misc. notes ♣ I was barely around today because after getting into the inner city to sign some contracts, and then therapy, I felt utterly exhausted. I don't feel that well either and more or less went straight to bed. (It's a mix of having the sniffles, mental/emotional issues, and RL stuff that causes stress ... I'm tired a lot.) But on the good side, the contracts ARE signed and my work starts on December 1st. It's now official! And although I'm nervous (duh), I'm also looking forward to it a lot. The temp agency is a really good one that cares more about its employers than others I've worked with, and of course I'm excited to meet my ex-colleagues again! They asked for me specifically, which does good things to my self-esteem. And from January onwards, I'm gonna have more money to plan with, which is desperately needed because I can tell there are going to be some extra costs in the future. (Wardrobe, fixing the toilet, cooking and baking utensils, a better binder... that sort of thing.) ♣ Do you remember when people started migrating to IJ and created community asylum duplicates, triplicates, et cetera? And how that annoyed me so much that I even included a sentence in my IJ Beginner's Guide about it? - Looks like it's starting on Dreamwidth, too. "I know there already exist communities for [topic], but they're all dead, so I created a new one!" Which... might end up dead? Great. Seriously, I DO think that DW has the potential to eventually have a level of activity which is not rivaling LJ but close enough. And currently there's definitely enough activity on my Subscription List when it comes to personal journals (quite similar to IJ, actually; on both sides, I don't feel "starved" in that regard). But community-wise? We're so not there yet. Much less for community duplicates. ♣ Thinking about participating in Wishlist communities. I'm also secretly hoping that people on my friendslist/reading list will, in case they have wishes I can grant. But funny enough, when faced with the task, suddenly I have difficulties thinking of wishes. Currently my list has one (1) item and then I got stuck. (For the curious, it's a Spongebob mousepad. I like Spongebob, although strictly speaking Squidward is my favourite.) |

Idealizing Fantasy Bodies
You know, I have to say I completely disagree with just about everything written here. One of the things the author fails (er, I think) to mention is that the changes in female avatar body-shapes between alpha and release were actually done in response to feedback from female players. Interrogating the text from the wrong perspective, indeed.

Sailor Moon Transformation
For the record, my superhero costume is my Professor Snape coat and my Lex Luthor black leather gloves. I think that says pretty much all you need to know about me, really.

Um, WTF? HPFandom.net... account suspended... any information to be had?Per darlinggirl1263 on LJ: The account was suspended for "excessive CPU usage". The mod is working to get things back up and running. We'll just have to wait it out. ETA: Had a couple of people asking for an older fic - meaning the ones I have not tagged here on IJ yet - so, I figured I'd just link you my LJ tags.Jesus. I gotta make myself get those old tags done. I mean, it has only been two and one-half years, right? *hates that kind of stuff* |

An offline friend of line is in trouble. Deep trouble. Sunday morning, I was crying about it (as well as my own manifold problems). No, I don't think it was just the menopause.
After the initial flailing and some talking with someone else, my mind cleared and I thought of one or two ideas. I'll say more later.
Gums are still sore, but probably still healing. Still playing World of Warcraft.
My therapist gave me a gift last Thursday: a cognitive-behavioral therapy workbook, with exercises. He told me to do the first chapter. It teaches stress-coping and relief strategies. Gods, do I need that just now.

ON BDSM Part III Okay, so we've covered SSC, RACK and consent along with Negotiation. Now we're going to look at – hopefully – just what power exchange is, contracts and limits. I say hopefully because I have no idea how long this post will be as I've just begun writing it. ( Let's start with Contracts. )Whew. Think I'm gonna stop there as I've probably given way too much information. I ended up covering things I hadn't intended to because they apply, so limits will be in another post. Again, questions, comments and discussion are welcome. Also, the_minx_17 has done a post on Vanilla, Kink and Lifestyle. |

Vanilla and Kinky and Lifestyle! Oh, my! To be honest, I hadn't intended on posting anymore about BDSM. Not outside of fic, anyway. But someone asked the difference between kinky sex and Lifestyle. And the answers to this are endless. Especially if you try to use nothing but serious, technical type jargon. Good thing we all know I'm not so great with sticking to the technical, huh? So, let's look at this like a bowl of ice cream. ( Because, really, who doesn't like ice cream? ) |

Miami Vice fics This week I thought I'd share my Miami Vice fics. They're based on the tv series, not the movie. You might wonder why I write fanfics based on an old tv series. The answer is DVD:s. A couple of years ago I found some cheap DVD:s at the supermarket and decided to buy four of them (at a very good price). Two of them contained a couple of episodes of Miami Vice. Right away, I was hooked. I really need to see the rest of those episodes. Current Mood: sleepy |

TWoP Update I did hear back from the mods, which I didn't expect. Basically, the problem was my tone. Oh, and the mod who actually suspended me and deleted my posts didn't read far enough back--or ahead--to notice that the thread had been and continued to be way off-topic.
I honestly didn't realize that TWoP had a long history of being faily. It's a shame, because I really liked the SGU snark, as well as the recaps of Flash Forward. Oh, well. |

So last week I posted about the Archive Of Our Own, which if you missed it is being called AO3 because AOOO sounds like a basset hound. But I didn't really post as a reader. It didn't occur to me because I had just spent several days uploading all of my fanfiction there. (Well, that I still like. I actually do have two Greek mythology fics that I haven't posted there, but the second one is a sequel to the first, which was written in high school and has some gender issues I'm really not proud of.) Anyway, after all that posting, I had kind of expected people to read my fic, but I hadn't actually gotten around to reading their fic. And omg you guys, AO3 is great for fic-reading. At least for me. ( AO3 as a reader. )Anyway. Having said all that, Chapter Seven of Between Here and Now and Forever is posted on: The Archive Of Our OwnFanFiction.NetSkyhawkeLiveJournalIn honor of this, ( more YouTube music links! ) |

Podfic progress I had to start again, because the stand mike wasn't working. It'd be fine if I had a desk, but with it on my lap in the back bedroom, I get echoes, and it picks up the ambient noise every time I shift position.
So I started...and realized quickly that the mike that connects to the jack on my laptop apparently picks up the broadcasts from the Catholic radio station whose tower is about a block away. While there's a certain irony in having the Catholic station ruining my attempt to record the NC-17 slash, I'm getting down to the wire here, and this is not helping.
Fortunately, I don't pick the station up after sundown, which still gives me a fair chunk of recording time. I've also ordered a USB headset mike that should get here on Wednesday. I kind of wish there were an adapter so I could use the jack mike at work, because my headset is crap. |

Daily life: Trying to figure out ways to improve my wordage "Look, I do know this: stories matter. "Sometimes they come to me in the middle of the night, I wake up and I know there was once a person with a name, a history, a life -- and sometimes they died a hundred years ago and sometimes they haven't been born yet, but they're so real, they're right there, like I can touch them. I write them, when I can, and grieve them often, in ways I've learned to be smart enough not to talk about. "At times that bothers me, the silence I feel obligated to that comes with storytelling. It bothers me when I write, which is one manner of inhabiting a character, and it bothers me when I act, which is another. But I've learned to live with it because stories, and the people they are about, are, in the telling, more important than me. "I'm just a translator, a medium, a canvass and a liar. Their stories matter so much that in the telling of them, all I can wish is to disappear. "And I love them so much, the people I tell into being. "Which means that when it comes to the business of awards my gut says, honor them. Not me. Not writers. Characters. Stories. Honor them." -- RM( Background to my entries )( Writing: Man, oh, man, I'm offline for a month, and the entire e-publishing world changes )( Simplicity and Writing: My time online; plus, the Prison City stuff I found )( Writing: For your amusement, the Nautical Telegraph Code )( Writing: The Lambda Literary Awards discussions in the blogosphere )( Simplicity: Getting back on track )( Writing: Squee! Writing life: A celebration of thirty years of The Three Lands I pressed my Muse hard and persuaded him to finish writing Law Links (The Three Lands) today, November 8. I began writing that novel fourteen years ago, almost to the day: November 15, 1995. By coincidence, this year happens to be the thirtieth anniversary of the original draft of the first Three Lands story I wrote, Blood Vow. In honor of that, I thought I'd show three versions each of two scenes from the novel, so that you can see how my writing has ceased being absolutely dreadful progressed. ( The first appearance of the Chara in 'Blood Vow,' just after my 16th birthday. Spoilers for Part One of 'Blood Vow.' Warning for bad teenage humor. )( The same scene re-written one year later )( The final version of that scene, age 45 )( The first appearance of Lord Carle, in a passing reference, as part of a flashback )( The second appearance of Lord Carle. Warning for a horrible simile. )( The final version of that scene, age 45 )( Journal entries about 'Blood Vow,' 1979-1995, with major spoilers ) |

Fic: Russian Roulette Title: Russian Roulette Author: x-tricks Fandom: Torchwood, Jack/Ianto Notes: this is part of the fucked-up universe that Falling belongs to. People are very screwed up here and doing unhealthy things. This story follows Falling. It also fulfills the 'gun play' square on my kink_bingo card. Disclaimer: These imaginary characters, performing fantasy acts, belong to legal entities and not me - I'm real. More or less. ( Russian Roulette ) |

Today we're going to look at some other terms – negotiation, limits, contracts - break those down, and hopefully provide those reading with a better understanding of what those terms mean. ( Let's talk about Negotiation first. )Questions? Comments? Feel free to discuss. Those in the community, your comments are not only welcomed, but valued. On BDSM, Part III |

Six Impossible Things (Seth’s Morning List Remix) [The O.C., Seth/Ryan, 100 Words, PG-13] 1. Only sesame seed bagels left, and no cream cheese. My life, ladies and gentlemen. 2. Ate a bowl of Oreos for breakfast. 3. There’s a coffee ring stain on my X-men. I know I accidentally burned down Dad’s office, but a man’s comics are sacred. 4. Ryan kissed me to shut me up. Twice. (!!!) 5. Did a Samuel L. Jackson impression under my breath. Was sharing my bucket of popcorn, extra butter, with Ryan, when our shoulders bumped together. It was nice; not Summer-in-a-Wonder-Woman-outfit nice, but getting there. 6. Make out Share kisses with Ryan at the poolhouse. Remix of theswearingkind's Sam Jackson Ain't Got Nothing on These Two (f-locked) for remixthedrabble. I haven't actually watched the episode on which #3 is based. One day I'll probably finish watching the O.C. Maybe. If only for more of Seth Cohen's wordvomit. [ LJ | IJ | DW ] Current Mood: *shuffle shuffle* |

An update on my surgery I'd been fearing the worst, but I went back to the oral surgeon on Thursday. He was pleased and even seemed surprised at how well the gum graft was doing. He snipped away a dangling thread from the stitches on the roof of my mouth; I think the remaining stitches dropped out later that afternoon.
I'll see him again in two weeks.
Lately, I could almost swear I can sometimes feel sensation within the transplant, although reason says that is impossible. There is no way there could be nerves there yet, although by now the blood vessels from the tissue around the graft must be growing into it. Sometimes I feel an itch around the edges for a few moments, but it goes away quickly. Other times, there's pain on one side or the other along a canine tooth. More often, though, it just feels like a piece of drying meat across the lower part of my incisors.
Afterward, I celebrated by having a mushroom burger and a chocolate shake at a restaurant called the Red Robin at a nearby mall. It's been a while since I went to a restaurant. Maybe not the smartest thing to do, but it made me happy.
It's strange how much this surgery seems to have knocked me out. Part of it may also be what has happened in World of Warcraft, but that's better left for another post. The surgery itself knocked me on my ass for two days, during which I mostly slept.
I still haven't actually dared to look at the graft.
I think there's a scar on the roof of my mouth -- a scar that's supersensitive. Hopefully it will go away in time.

Television Without Pity--But Racism is Dandy! Okay, I should have known better. But I was enjoying the SGU thread on TWoP, with all of the lovely snark. And I appreciated the fact that most of the posters seemed to get why having sex in someone else's body was skeevy, and why it's problematic that the black guy in SGU is yet another Angry Black Man. On BDSM, Part I So, the_minx_17 and I have been talking for the last couple days about making a specific post. Minx put hers up already – you can find it here - and now I'm putting up mine. Hello, my name is Irana, and I am a Top. This means that within the BDSM community/The Scene/Lifestyle, I am what many refer to as a Dominant. This post will hopefully not only explain why I read very little BDSM, D/s, lifestyle themed fics, but also will allow those of you reading who are not a part of the community some knowledge. Because really, some of the stuff out there being called lifestyle fic is offensive. Please note, my specific issue is with fic labeled as portraying a lifestyle - as in BDSM 24/7 - relationship. Some of those fics have no actual basis in reality as they do not acknowledge RACK/SSC at all and it drives me batshit insane. What are those two things you ask? ( Let me explain. )I have a lot more to say, so I'm going to stop here for a bit. Got questions? Ask. Really. Next topics will be limits, total power exchange and negotiation. Edit: Part II of this discussion/meta is here. It covers Negotiation, so if there are questions about consent, SSC or RACK, please leave those here. |
