The year is 2045 on an Earth not entirely like our own. Technology has taken huge leaps in some arenas of science, and magic is quite real. Just two decades ago the world was on the brink of World War III, with Russia using powerful weapons of magic and advanced technology to attack its neighbors and their allies.

A certain group of Russians managed to build a very unique machine that they were able to use to summon "Legendaries" -- men and women, human and nonhuman, all with extraordinary ability. Often these individuals came not only from other realities, but from entirely unheard of worlds. This technology had not been fully perfected, and tended to give strange results if parameters were not specific enough.

At first, these Legendaries fought for Russia, but eventually uncovered information showing that it was actually Russia that had started the war and discovered signs that Russia was only using them to further the national cause. The Legendaries held a rebellion, and many opted to fight alongside the militaries on the other side.

Russia lost the war, and while NATO was able to confiscate the Rasputin Machine, they were unable to completely dismantle it; since that time, it's been known to summon more individuals from other places seemingly of its own will.

As for the Legendaries, they had no place to go. The machine could not bring them home again, so most gained employment under a special organization based in San Fransisco that was funded by the American government, dealing with problems the machine caused, pockets of Russian rebellion, and other things "normal people" were simply not equipped to deal with.

Ten years have passed since the war's end, and over that time peace came back to the world again. The public perception held that the Legendaries were no longer needed. Since the war, they've settled down into perfectly normal lives with perfectly normal jobs and in some cases even perfectly normal families, but every now and then...

Well, who can say what happens next?
