Notes: audreysmagic posted a challenge on her LJ for a comment fic with the prompt. I decided to toe-dip into DSM fandom, and see what I could do. Totally not betaed since I wrote it so quickly.
"He was sleeping there, so peaceful and cozy....and I looked at him...and I think that was the first time I've ever seriously considered owning a gun." Lisa George paused to take a bite of salad. "It was bad enough that his father worked for the Darlings, and we know how well that worked out for Nick’s childhood and mental health, but now Karen is calling him all the time. And the fact his secretary put the wedding march as Karen's ring tone is annoying. I married Nick because of the person he was. And it's all changing now that he earns so much now. Apparently most of his old clients have gone elsewhere at this point. The divas take up all his time. You would think he had the sense to say no."
Her best friend Janet munched on some raw broccoli in an effort to not say anything. Lisa George was an amazing person and mom, but bitching about Nick at every lunch date had gotten old three months ago. Now it was downright eye-twitch inducing. Everyone knew Nick had been over Karen forever, but Karen had always been a few fries short of a Happy Meal. The latest state of affairs with fiancée number four - or was it five? – and how it had affected Lisa’s marriage had inspired the idea of gluing her ears closed.
Lisa tossed a roll at her. "Janet, are you listening?"
Clearly, this wasn't going to be a nice, happy lunch. Again. She really needed to make more friends around town. "Yes, Lisa. And as I said a million other times, you don't have anything to worry about. Nick's not going to cheat on you. You know that."
Scowling at her fork, Lisa shot back with, "Well, you didn't catch them kissing, now did you?"
Okay, that piqued her interest, Janet had to admit. "Wait, when was this?"
"At the Darling anniversary party. I was looking for Nick after Pat asked me to find him, and I walked in midway." Shrugging her shoulders, she sighed. "And that was right before Brian's little boy came to visit."
"So, why do you stay with him?"
"Because I love him."
"Then I say tough it out a little while longer. Look, he's trying to find out who killed his father. Any of the loonies have a motive. After he finds out, it'll get back to normal." She really didn't understand the big deal. Ten million a year seemed like enough reasons to stick around.
"And you've never had the Darlings be the third person in your marriage either." Lisa pushed her salad aside. "I'm not hungry. Just ready to go do some retail therapy. Might as well put a dent into his money supply."
As the waiter grabbed their cards, they chatted about the sales and what they'd like to buy. By the end of day, they'd spent at least two grand on a new wardrobe for Lisa. She was hoping that some of the skimpier items would remind him of what he was missing at home. And before the Darling invasion, they had been discussing another baby. It's not like he couldn't afford one now. Of course, what was the point having one without a father around?
Janet just wanted a day off of friend duty so maybe she could find husband number three. Her four-year-old Z-3 just wasn't fashionable anymore. And alimony was about six months from running out. Time to start husband shopping. There was a cute baseball player interested a party last month. Maybe he'd work. He made enough in the major leagues, and a new Porsche would be nice.
And Nick? Well, he was off trying to bribe a judge to keep Jeremy out of jail for assaulting an officer while under the influence of alcohol.
