[thread] - jace shore & benji harper
Characters: [info]shore & [info]benjiharper
Setting: The 24-hour Starbucks in Times Square, around midnight.
Summary: Jace is being a bit mopey, and he runs into Benji.
Rating: PG-13?, language probably.

Deep down, Jace knew that he was being absolutely ridiculous. He was a grown man who was on the brink of a temper-tantrum simply because his father, who was also a grown man, had expressed to him the idea that he 'might' ask his girlfriend to be his wife. It wasn't even a certainty - it was just an idea his father had had, that the man still needed to consider before actually acting upon his desire.

So Jace decided to go for a walk to calm himself down a bit, knowing that he just needed some time to digest the information too. That was the adult thing to do, wasn't it? He knew he was overreacting and that even if his father remarried and started a family with Felicia, he, Jace, wasn't going to be shunted to the side. (However, the doubt remained - if only because that had been exactly what had happened to him when his mother remarried and started a family.) It sounded dramatic even to his own ears, though, when he called himself unloveable. "Fuck me, I'm an idiot," he said to himself, as he walked, shaking his head in anger at his own stupidity.

After walking for quite a while, he ended up at the twenty-four hour Starbucks in Times Square. So he went inside and ordered a vanilla bean frappacino, Jace found himself a table in the corner and sat down to drink it. He was alone with his thoughts and his delicious drink, until a shadow fell over the table, and he looked up to see a familiar face. "Well," he said, smiling, "fancy meeting you here."

Oh, what a good day it was. A good day indeed. For one thing, it was the weekend. The Weekends were automatically good days. Not that it meant the same thing that it did when he was a kid, since he still had to work (ahaha, work) on the day. But weekends still carried the stigma of freedom to it. That was enough for Benji to consider it a good day. Of course, the weekend was, for all purposes, over with. Which meant it was Monday. Day off! Therefore he could do basically whatever he wanted and not have to worry about making it to call time.

Of course, one of the downsides to Benji's particular choice of 'extracurricular' activities was that it made him hungry. He hadn't even smoked that much, but he felt the familiar cravings. Which, of course, happened only because he had literally no food in his apartment. Who'd eaten it all? The bastards. So what was a man to do? Hit up one of the many 24-hour restaurants in the great city of New York...City. His wanderings found him standing in front of the Starbucks in Times Square, and all of a sudden a coffee drink with a Rice Krispie Treat sounded pretty damn good. So he stepped inside, ordered his drink, then played with the straws as he waited. He was just going to take it right home with him, but stopped when he saw none other than Claude Hopopokowski...or something sitting at a table. After that, it was obvious what he had to do. Pay him a visit! "Hello hellooo," he said, returning the greeting as he flopped down in an open chair.

Oh Benji. Jace adored Benji, if only because the other always seemed to be in a good mood, and a good mood that was also totally infectious at that. Jace had his suspicions about the 'reasoning' behind Benji's perpetual joy, but who was he to judge? At a time like this, a little weed might actually have done the young man some good. He'd always been more of a 'hugs, not drugs' type of guy, but he wasn't morally opposed either.

"What are you doing here so late, Benji?" Jace asked, as Benji dropped down into the opposite chair. "This place is such a tomb tonight ... not that I'm here all that often anyway." It was true; Jace rarely ever came to this particular Starbucks, nor did he spend a lot of time in other Starbucks stores. He liked coffee, but he didn't really like paying so much for it. Plus, all the modifiers for the drinks were just too confusing. A plain old vanilla bean frappacino was more than enough for him.

TOO LATE NOW, MWAHAHAHAHA. HA.

Truthfully, Benji was pretty much always in a good mood. Whether he'd had a bit to smoke or not. After all, what was there to be upset with? He had a good life. Good friends, a good job, and a mid-to-decent apartment. In New York, that all equaled up to 'good'. Okay, well, maybe his extra 'additives' to his life made it so he was cheerful more often than he would otherwise be. But he was a happy guy! And sure, hugs not drugs. But what if the drugs resulted in more hugs? Wouldn't that be a good thing?

He wasn't invited, and he knew this, but he and Jace were buds, right? So the other man would tell him to bugger off (isn't that what his people said?) if he wasn't wanted. He hadn't said so yet, so Benji made himself comfortable by propping his feet up on another chair. "Doing here?" he asked, looking around as if he'd forgotten where he was. "I dunno. I was just walking around and figured I'd stop in for a snack. They actually have pretty good Rice Krispies. Want a piece?"

Jace really had no problem with Benji being there right now. Anything to keep himself from moping around like a small child whose ice cream had been taken away, right? Benji had the most infectious smile, and Jace really hoped that it would rub off a bit on himself. He really didn't want to be in a funk over the whole situation. He felt very much like a baby, no matter how much his friends insisted that he wasn't acting like one, and he wanted that feeling to go away as soon as humanly possible.

He nodded then - the Rice Krispie did look pretty delicious, and he'd considered buying one himself, but he figured the frappacino had more than enough calories to tide him over until the morning. But now that it was right there in front of him ... well, no harm in a bite or two, and Benji was offering after all. It would be rude to refuse. "Sure, mate, I'd love a piece," he said, holding out his hand. "You want a sip of my frap? It's vanilla bean ... definitely the best one."

Moping was bad. Very bad in the Book of Benji. All it did was take all those negative feelings you had and make them fester a bit until they were ten times worse than they'd originally been. He usually ended up talking out his problems with one of his friends. Whether they remembered the conversation or not was never a sure thing. But hey, Benji always felt better.

He broke out into a grin when Jace accepted his offer of the Rice Krispie. Taking a sip of his own drink, he set to work at breaking the treat into pieces. Which was harder than it looked, since the pieces insisted on clinging to one another with marshmallow-y goodness. He finally got it broken apart, all but dropping the piece into Jace's outstretched hand. He smirked, as if this was somehow funny to him, and took a long sip of his own drink again. "Frap? Oh, uh...sure. I've got a chocolate caramel frap. It's gooood."

Jace watched Benji go to work on his marshmallow square, with a small smirk appearing on his lips as the gooey treat finally appeared manageable enough to get into pieces. It was messy, but it still looked completely appetizing. He hadn't realized how hungry he actually was until just that moment. Maybe after this, he'd head out and grab himself something to eat or just go home and make himself something. Normally, he had a policy of not eating after midnight because it was bad for digestion, but he supposed he could make an exception just this once.

After popping the accepted treat into his mouth, chewing and swallowing, Jace took a drink from his own frap, before holding it out for Benji to try, if he wanted. "Chocolate caramel does sound pretty tasty," he added. "Like one of those turtles, you know? The candies?" Jace wasn't very adventurous at Starbucks though. Although, the pumpkin spice drink that they were sampling did look pretty delicious too...

There were rules about not eating after a certain time? Whoops. Benji had surely broken all of them at one time or another. He couldn't help it if he got really hungry. And when he was hungry, he didn't care if it was midnight, two in the morning, or five in the morning. If he was hungry, he was going to eat. It was as simple as that. What was the point of walking around hungry? After all, he did jump around more than enough to burn off those late-night calories, or at least he thought so.

Benji considered Jace's offer of the Frap for a moment before reaching out to accept the cup, all but shoving his own into the other man's now empty hand. Did he ask first? Well no, he didn't. Did he care? Not really. He took a sip from Jace's drink, breaking out into a grin. "That is good. Hoopapakowski, you know how to pick 'em. I'll have to try that next time. Or when I finish this one," he mused, looking at his own cup for a moment, as if contemplating how quickly he could finish it to go and buy another. "Turtles? I love turtles. My dad used to give them to my mom and I'd steal them. She'd just whine about her ass getting big anyway."

Jace took the offered frappacino with a big grin on his face. Laughing a little at Benji's comment before he took a sip, Jace realized he was more than glad that Benji had joined him tonight however accidental it might have been. He was feeling much better already, and he knew that if Benji hadn't come around, he'd probably still be moping into his drink. "Turtles really are delicious - we should get a box of them for backstage Tuesday," he said, as the idea struck him. As if Benji really needed any more sugar ... or any of them really. The Tribe was a pretty hyper group, particularly for a bunch of people playing hippies and stoners.

It was nice though, having such a tight-knit cast like that. Jace simply adored each and every one of them. It was really a lot like having the big family that he'd never had (or felt welcomed in, rather). He felt like he could confide anything in any of them, and they wouldn't judge him or make him feel badly about himself. And perhaps it was kind of nice being the baby of the group. He knew he'd always have them to lean on.

Had Benji known he'd interrupted a self-pity session, he'd have made certain to act a little more...well, perhaps a bit more 'over the top' than was usual. Anything to get a laugh out of his friend, of course. Anything to make his friend feel better if he was feeling in the dumps. As amiable as Benji was, he was just human, and not immune to feeling a bit blue now and again. So yes, he knew that it sucked. Therefore, he was intent on making sure that his friends, if he could help it, didn't get down in the dumps.

He did light up a bit when Jace mentioned getting candies for backstage. "You should! But make sure you get plenty of them. I'll be pretty bummed if they're all eaten before I get to them. Then again, I get to go on and off stage more than most, so I might be able to sneak a few more," he plotted, quite seriously.

Jace snickered, shaking his head as he considered Benji's devious ways. "Or I could get you a box of your very own, plus a box for all of us to share," he offered, equally as seriously. Jace raised his eyebrows appraisingly, as a smirk graced his lips. Although he wasn't exactly rolling in the dough, having a lead role in a popular Broadway show was not without its little perks - and a decent-sized salary was certainly one of them. At the very least, Jace was able to splurge on things every once in a while. (It probably helped that he wasn't supporting anyone but himself, and he lived in a moderately-priced apartment.) Besides, turtles were not even that expensive anyway! And what was a little candy among good friends?
