Who: Danny Kane and Bethany Martin.
What: He's proposing to her.
Where: Atlanta Botanical Garden
When: Saturday May 8th, 2027; late afternoon
Rating: PG-13, I think.
Status: Incomplete.

Atlanta didn't have a lot of romantic locations. He would have liked to have done this on the beach where he'd first kissed her, but when you were 16, you couldn't exactly rush off to a beach that was several hours away. This would simply have to do in a pinch.

Danny knew Bethany wouldn't exactly be surprised by what he intended to do today. They'd already discussed the subject, after all, and started making plans. He wanted to do it right, though. Even though she'd already agreed, he wanted to ask her properly. He might be skipping that whole asking her daddy for her hand thing, which he felt bad enough about, but he wasn't going to mess up asking her to be his wife.

He was nervous as hell, even though he knew how she would answer. He just didn't want to screw this up. After all, he only intended to ask this question once in his life. He wanted to make it perfect.

They'd spent the last few hours walking around the garden and enjoying the scenery following a picnic lunch. Danny's hand was in hers as they walked and as they reached a more secluded spot, he halted, pulling her to a stop with him.

"I love you more than anything in this world," he told her. His hand brushed over her cheek as he gazed adoringly into her eyes. "I've loved you since we were children, even if I didn't realize what that meant until the past year. You make me happier than I ever dreamed possible. You complete me in every way."

He took a deep, calming breath before letting go of her hand and dropping to one knee. Pulling the small box from his pocket, he fumbled with it for a second before he finally managed to open it to reveal the ring he'd chosen for her.

"I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Bethany Martin, will you marry me?"

Bethany, of course, was clueless to the fact that Danny intended to propose. After all, they'd skipped that step when they'd started planning their wedding... well, their elopement. She wasn't worried about it, though. She didn't need a pretty ring or a lavish wedding. The only thing she cared about was him... going to bed with him every night... waking up with him every morning. As long as she had him, she had everything that she needed.

Sometimes, a guilty feeling would sink into the pit of her stomach when she thought about how they were lying to their parents, but she would push it away. If they wanted to be together, they had to lie, and there was nothing she wouldn't do to be with him.

They'd spent several hours exploring the garden. There were so many beautiful flowers that she was constantly having to remind herself that she shouldn't pick them. Occasionally, though, she would find one that she simply couldn't resist.

She didn't protest when he pulled her off to the side. Instead, she looked at him expectantly. Her entire face lit up when he told her that he loved her. They'd said it hundreds of thousands of times in the last year, but she was certain that she was never going to get tired of hearing it.

"I love you, too," she answered automatically.

When he continued, her eyes glossed over. It went without saying, but she felt exactly the same way. He made her happier than she could begin to describe... he completed her in every way. Something of a confused expression moved over her features when he dropped down to one knee, but it faded when he pulled a small box out of his pocket. He was... oh...

Her eyes instantly filled with tears, and she began to nod her head. He hadn't actually asked the question that was sure to come, but that didn't seem to matter.

"Yes," she answered. "Of course."

Rather than allowing him to get back to his feet, she dropped to her knees, wrapped her arms around him, and pressed her lips to his.

Danny was ridiculously nervous about this moment. He shouldn't have been. He knew what her answer would be. He couldn't help it, though. He wanted it to be perfect. He wanted it to be a moment she'd remember forever.

When Bethany started to nod her head, his own eyes filled with tears. Knowing she'd say yes didn't lessen the impact of this moment. He'd been trying to make it memorable for her, but Danny knew that he, too, would remember this moment for the rest of his life.

"I love you so much," he murmured as their lips met in a tender kiss. Rather than deepen it, he pulled back after a moment. He didn't want to stop kissing her, but he was more than ready to put the ring on her finger.

"It's not much," he explained, almost embarrassed and definitely a little worried she might not like it. "With the deposit on an apartment and all... I tried to find the prettiest one I could without completely blowing our budget," he babbled at her as slightly shaking hands pulled the ring from it's velvet cushioned box and slipped it onto her left ring finger.

It went without saying, but he had no reason to worry about whether or not this would be memorable for her. With the way they'd decided to get married, she hadn't expected a real proposal. This... the gardens... the speech... the ring... it was great... it was everything she'd ever hoped it would be.

"I love you, too," she echoed.

Any other time, Bethany would have been disappointed when he pulled out of the embrace, but she was just as anxious for him to slide that ring onto her finger.

"It's perfect," she insisted when he tried to explain why he'd gotten the ring he'd gotten. "Really, Danny. I love it. It's... I've never seen anything so beautiful."

She watched as he slid the ring onto her finger. She hadn't been lying. He might think that there wasn't much to it, but she thought it was perfect. Once the ring was in place, her eyes filled with tears a second time. This was it. They were really going to do it. This was the first day of the rest of their lives.

Just because they had already discussed marriage and started making their plans didn't mean that Danny didn't want to make it special for her or ask her properly. Not that it was quite asking properly when they couldn't tell their parents. Danny felt pretty guilty about that, but he knew there was no real way around it if they wanted to do this. And he definitely did.

He grinned brightly when she assured him that the ring was perfect. She deserved something better, he knew, but he also knew it would be his job to take care of her in a couple of months, which meant not spending his entire savings on a ring.

"When I make it into the NFL, I'll get you something nicer," he promised, despite her assurances that it was perfect. He smiled and brushed a hand over her cheek before leaning in to kiss her again.

Like Danny, Bethany felt guilty for hiding this from their parents. She knew that there was no way around it, though. If they didn't hide what they were doing, their parents would keep them from going through with it, and she definitely didn't want that. Logically, she knew that it would be easier if they waited until they were eighteen, but as far as she was concerned, that was a small eternity. She wanted to be married to him now; she didn't want to wait another day, much less another couple of years.

"You won't," she answered with a shake of her head. "I won't wear it if you do. This is it... this is my ring... it's perfect... I'm never taking it off."

She melted into him when he brushed another kiss over her lips. She knew that they couldn't get too carried away, but there was nothing else she wanted to do.

Danny couldn't help smiling at her assertion that the ring was perfect. A part of him still wanted to get her something nicer someday, but he was glad she liked it. He'd been sure she would when he'd picked it out, but then when it'd come time to give it to her, he'd started to second guess himself. After all, his mom's ring was much nicer. So was his Aunt Dari's. Girls expected a really nice ring, right?

"I love you, Bethany Martin," he informed her in between kisses. "Now and always."

Like her, he knew they couldn't get too carried away, but he wanted to take a few moments to kiss her, at least. The girl he loved had just agreed to married him. He couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than this.

It was true that most girls expected to be given a really nice ring when they were proposed to. Bethany wouldn't have tried to deny that, but she happened to think that the ring he'd given her was really nice. After all, she hadn't been exaggerating when she'd told him that she thought it was perfect.

"I love you, Daniel Kane," she answered the few moments her lips weren't pressed to his. "Now and always."

Bethany knew that they couldn't get too carried away, but she didn't think it would hurt if they spend a few moments kissing. They'd just gotten engaged, after all. That was how couples typically celebrated that sort of thing, wasn't it?
