Ingrid was in no condition to block out his thoughts. Normally, she did her best to keep from listening in on her friends and family, but right now she just didn't have that ability. She was hungover, she was embarrassed, she had no idea how she was supposed to make things right. She knew Charles was angry and she didn't blame him.
He didn't have to speak his questions out loud and by some miracle she was able to wait until he did speak before she answered him. She didn't really want to add reading his mind to the lists of reasons he should despise her.
"I didn't know until after the accident," she told him. "After.. I didn't want.. I didn't want you to hurt the way I was hurting."
