Nineteen. She was turning nineteen in just under three months and she was still a…a…virgin. Belinda Prescott was the eldest sister and the only one who still hadn't gone all the way. Granted, she was mere minutes older than Hope and Allie but she was still the eldest if you asked her. Minutes counted! And then there was Tessa! Her seventeen year old sister had lost that card a long time ago. They never teased her or made fun of her but Bee couldn't help feeling like they belonged to some club that she didn't. In fact, it seemed like everyone one did but her! 'Not for much longer,' Bee thought, dragging a brush through her chunky layers. Each stroke of the brush reflected the light differently, sometimes looking black but others looking blue. Her hair was black but it was the kind of black that had a midnight blue undertone to it. It was New Year's Eve and there were mere hours left before a new year would begin. Belinda had big plans for the coming year! She was going to stop dwelling on the past and focus on the future. And what a bright, bright future that was going to be, at least if you asked her. This was going to be the year she replaced Kenny Sawyer; both as her bandmate and her soul mate. It was time to move on and she vowed that starting at midnight, she'd never let him enter her thoughts again. He had broken her heart so completely that she still hadn't taped all the pieces back together yet. But she was going to. She had thought he was the one. He had seemed like her match in every way. They shared a passion for music, a love of concerts and just seemed to click in every way. She'd planned to turn in her V card last year on her eighteenth birthday; planned to take that leap with Kenny. That was until he broke up with her just days before, not even bothering to give her a reason. She needed to rid him from her thoughts. It was time to stop moping, to stop having hope that he would chose her again. She dropped the brush down onto the bathroom counter with a frustrated sigh. As if her brain was an etch-a-sketch, Belinda shook her head hard to make those thoughts disappear. Her bangs, her long layers bounced from side to side. She ran her finger through her hair to adjust the way it landed. Leaning against the counter, Belinda appraised her appearance. Her hair was perfect. It hung straight, over her shoulders and framed her face. Her long bangs were blown off to the side, partially covering her left eye. Thick charcoal eye liner outlined her eyes. Her long eye lashes were heavily coated with mascara for a full look. The dark make-up made her cerulean blue eyes stand out against her light skin. Times likes this, when she was lost in her thoughts and contemplating her past, she felt like a stranger. Sometimes she didn't always recognize the girl staring back at her. A loud banging rattled the bathroom door, chased the ghost of her insecurities away. "Are you almost done in there!" her sister, Allie, yelled through the door. "We have parties to go to, too!" Belinda rolled her eyes. She hadn't been in the bathroom that long at all. Forty-five minutes was a good time considering she had to shower, do her hair and her make-up. "Oh shut up!" Bee bellowed back. "It gave you plenty of time to rifle through my closet for the good clothes!" she teased, grinning despite her somber thoughts seconds ago. "Two more minutes! And that's it!" Allie warned, though she didn't sound menacing at all. "Or you'll what? Blow down the door?" Bee challenged, sticking her tongue out at the closed door. She heard Allie's footsteps growing softer as she moved away from the door. One last look at the mirror confirmed she looked like her same old self but she vowed midnight would bring out a new Bee this year. *** It didn't matter that it was just some college party using the new year as an excuse to get drunk with her favorite people and a ton of other strangers. Bee was dressed as though she was walking down the red carpet rather than the moldy carpet of the frat house hosting this insanity. She was wearing a black chiffon baby doll dress. Each layer of chiffon material was cut differently and black sequins adorned every part of the top of the dress. A small pearl necklace hung around her neck, while matching ones were in her ears. Her black opened toed sandals gave her an additional two to three inches of height. Belinda couldn't have looked more out place at this party if she'd tried. She looked like an old hollywood starlet instead of the eighteen year old scene wannabe rockstar she usually did. Go big or go home. Wasn't that the saying?, she wondered. Her gaze bounced around to the other party goers, taking in what they were wearing. Jeans, mini-skirts, short skanky dresses. Before she could second guess her choice she spotted a friend beckoning her over. "Hey you," she said, greeting Brody with a brilliant smile. It was obvious to pretty much everyone that she adored this boy. Belinda couldn't help it! He was nice and kind, funny, fun to be around. And he was a musician. Musicians were sexy, very sexy if you asked her. His eyes traveled down the length of her body and back up to meet her gaze. "You look incredible." "I know. Your cool points just went up a lot by me coming over here," she responded, a teasing smirk on her lips. "The things you do for me, Bee." He gave her a full smile, the kind that showed his perfect white teeth. The kind that made her stomach do flips. Just because he was her best friend didn't mean his smile didn't awaken the butterflies in her stomach. "What can I say," she returned, lamely. 'Something better than that!' she screamed inside her head. "Dance?" Belinda asked, hoping to not give him a chance to realize how stupid her reply had been. Brody nodded, holding out his arm. Once she slipped her arm through, he led them into the next room. He dropped his arm, catching her hand in his. In one smooth move he had spun her around and back into his arms. He flashed her a debonair smile before bringing her into a traditional slow dance position. That smile dazzled her straight down to her core. How had she missed how smooth he was? Then again, usually they just played video games and other goofy and childish things. Not that either one of them were above that. With her heels she was close to the same height as him but not quiet. He still had at least an inch on her. Belinda didn't mind though, not when she was staring into his pale blue eyes. The music was a much faster beat than either one of them was moving but she didn't care. Swaying to the music with Brody's arms around her slender frame chased away most of the insecurities that had plagued her thoughts a couple of hours ago. "Careful you don't ruin your chances," Bee said, finally finding her voice. She kept her tone light and teasing. "I think there are a ton jealous girls wondering what you are doing over here with me," she informed him. She'd noticed that they'd managed to be the focus of a few girls attention span for the moment. His gaze traveled the corners of the living room. "Funny. I don't see any," he responded. Brody shrugged his shoulders, emphasizing how little he cared about anyone else. He was here, with a really good friend of his. He wasn't about to ditch her for another girl. His brunette hair fell into his eyes and without hesitation Belinda brushed it back. She didn't want anything to obstruct her view of his eyes. **** Her need for fresh air found themselves out back on a deserted patio. The frigid late December temperature kept the other party goers inside but it didn't seem to have much affect on Belinda. Her skin was red and hot from alcohol consumption. She had no idea how long they'd been out here but their conversation seemed to cover a lot of topics. "Do you have a New Year's resolution?" Bee asked in a slurred string of words. It was a random question, as well as a rhetorical one evidently seeing as how she went on to answer it herself. "I do. I want to have sex. For the first time. I'm tired of waiting, you know? Apparently I keep picking the wrong guys. I fall in love with them but apparently…so why should I wait, right? So that's my resolution: To cancel my V-Club membership," she continued in a babble of drunken thoughts. Thoughts that should have probably remained inside her head. "I should make that my resolution," Brody announced, grinning at her. It was a wide, goofy grin that somehow managed to taunt her. Her eyes narrowed slightly. He was trying to steal her resolution! "It's my resolution," Belinda reminded him. It was silly but she felt protective and slightly possessive over the resolution. It was just words, a phrase but she felt as though she owned it. "Besides. You can't resolve to do something you've already done. It's against the rules. If you are going to have a resolution you must obey the rules," she informed it. Bee grabbed her red plastic cup filled with fruit punch and rum, bringing the rim to her lips. She tipped it back and the contents spilled down her throat. Was this five? Or six? Maybe it was seven…, she wondered. At some point she'd lost count of how much she'd had to drink. It was a party and she was having fun so who cared if she'd had twenty! Brody shook his head at her, silently disputing her. "Wrong. You can resolve to do anything you want. Even if we did play by your made up rules…I haven't had sex so it is a perfectly acceptable resolution." His words were slurred, though he was not nearly as drunk as the girl sitting across from him. "Oh…well…still," Bee mumbled, setting her cup back down on the table. He hadn't had sex? That struck her as odd and confusing. She had just assumed he had. No matter. Just because he was a virgin too didn't mean Belinda was going to let him have her resolution. It belonged to her thank you very much. "It's still my resolution! I thought of it first!" He gave her a pleading smile. "I can't borrow it?" he asked, feigned sadness coating his voice. Belinda shook her head, whipping herself with her long hair. "Request denied," she told him before sticking her tongue out at him. This wasn't abnormal for them to be arguing over nonsense. Hanging out with Brody seemed to bring out her inner child, reducing her to responses that of a five year old. "You can borrow it when I'm done with it. Make it your second resolution. You can have more than one you know. But me? I get first dibs." Brody was staring at her, a distant look in his eyes as he attempted to process what Belinda had said. "That makes NO sense," he finally said. "You can't get dibs on a resolution." Bee nodded vigorously. "Can too! It makes perfect sense." Which wasn't a lie. It did make perfect sense to her. "Page seventeen, paragraph 2 of the 'Resolution Makers Handbook'." So it was a completely fictitious book. Somehow it still validated her argument. "You're just drunk. I however am perfectly not." She grinned at him and looked down to grab her cup. Belinda misjudged the position, nearly knocking over the cup. She stopped it before she violated a party foul. You didn't waste alcohol. "You just made that up," Brody countered. "No such book exists. But guess what! It is my resolution! There I said it! It's done and there's nothing you can do about it!" he teased. His smirk seemed to reach his eyes. If she could make up nonexistent rules and books, he could make up stuff too. "FIVE MINUTES UNTIL THE BALL DROPS!" came the distant yell of those inside. "Come on! Inside!" Belinda demanded, forgetting all about the biting reply that had formed to reject his statement. She attempted to slide back her seat. The chair leaned back at an off angle and she panicked. She felt herself start to fall backwards and flailed. Body limbs were waving in all different directions, somehow ending with her chair back on the ground the right way. Brody was standing at her right offering her a hand. She slipped her hand into his, allowing him to pull her to a standing position. The alcohol seemed to hit her hard then, causing her to stagger back a few steps. His arm encircled her waist and she leaned most of her weight onto him hoping he could support her heavy limbs. Her brain seemed to be moving at a super slow rate as they stumbled inside the back door to rejoin the party. **** "10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1!" the room chorused. Cheers and noisemakers erupted around the room to welcome in 2011 with enthusiasm. Belinda turned to Brody and pressed her lips against his. What she'd intended to be a quick kiss for good luck at the stroke of midnight, deepened into something else. She felt his hands in her hair long, black hair, his teeth tugging at her bottom lip. The rest of the party faded out. In the midst of all the craziness of the new year, she didn't hear anything. It was as if nothing else existed but them. "Wow," Bee murmured, breathless when they pulled their lips apart. Though she didn't untangle herself from him and he didn't remove his hand from her hair. "Wow." That was the only word she could come up with at the moment. Brody had turned her brain to mush with a single kiss. But it was one hell of a kiss. **** The pounding in her her head was excruciating. She opened her eyes to see the bright rays of the mid morning sun. Bee whimpered in pain, shutting them again to block out the sunshine and praying that the room would stop spinning. What the… she wondered, realizing there was a person in her bed. She turned her head, resting her chin on the chest of this person. Brody? There he was, asleep and lying next to her. His brunette hair was pointing in several different directions. The covers were exposing his bare chest and a blush warmed her features as she realized he was naked. That they were both naked. The previous nights events came back in a series of flashes that didn't make much sense as they didn't return in sequential order. As she pieced the night together it became clear that they'd had sex. She suspected that was the case since they were both lacking in the clothes department and sharing a bed. That at least explained the soreness she was feeling. She draped an arm across his stomach and rested her cheek on his chest, rising and falling in a steady rhythm. He was warm, very warm. The heat radiating from his body warmed hers. Bee tried to fight her heavy eyelids but the warmer she got, the more futile the it became and within moments sleep enveloped her. *** Brody squinted, pulling his eyes shut tighter. The rays of sunlight pulling him into the land of consciousness but he wasn't quite ready for that just yet. He heard someone sigh and felt the hot air as it hit his skin. He felt the weight on top of him and was incredibly confused. He opened his eyes to survey his surroundings and the body lying against him. His eyes widened in surprise as he recognized a very naked Belinda was the one lying next to him. Her long, dark hair was all over. Some of it was against his neck and chest while the rest covered the pillow the shared. Concentrating on memories and coherent thoughts was more effort than he wanted to put into anything right this second. His brain felt foggy and disconnected - and even the sound of his heart beating seemed loud. Still he struggled to remember. Bits and pieces flooded his brain. He remembered counting down to the ball dropping, sharing a more than platonic kiss to ring in the new year. The rest were scattered flashes of cab rides and kissing and shedding clothes. All he could hope was that one of them had been smart enough in their drunken haze to use protection. No sooner than the thought popped into his head, it disappeared to pull his focus on the petite girl next to him. A smile danced across his lips and all the way to his eyes at the contented hum that escaped his sleeping companion. His fingers trailed up and down, tracing patterns on her back. Although he had never though of Bee this way or thought he'd end up in bed with her, he couldn't deny that it was a pleasant surprise. Brody just wished he could remember more of the night than what seemed like the highlight real, but they were very good snippets. Using his other hand he brushed the hair that provided a curtain to clearly see her face back behind her ear. She looked so peaceful, so content that he did not want to wake her up just yet. Although he'd been in her room countless times it all seemed new somehow, different. The shades of purple in her plaid covers seemed brighter more alive. The black seemed bolder, providing a starker contrast against the violet hues and their pale skin. A shiver rippled through her body, though he couldn't know for certain if she was cold or the caress of his fingers caused it. Regardless, he pulled the covers up higher to make sure she was comfortable. Belinda grumbled and whimpered as something or someone was rousing her from the depths of sleep. She was having an incredible dream; it wasn't fair that it was slipping through her fingertips like sand and there was nothing she could do about it. She twitched at what felt like a feather trailing up and down her back. All of the nerves on her side were on red alert, pushing out the last remnants of her dream. The goosebumps forming on her body were making it difficult to concentrate on anything else. Her eyelids fluttered open and closed, trying to adjust to the light. When she could stand it, she opened them fully to see Brody staring down at her. "Mmmm, morning," she greeted him with a lazy, relaxed smile. Aside from the hangover, that was one of the best nights sleep she'd gotten in awhile. At first she'd been shocked and uncertain when she'd woken up the first time. Now, though, there wasn't an ounce of surprise or awkwardness. At least on her end. She hoped that this new development wouldn't make things awkward between them. He was one of her best friends and she very much adored him. In fact, Bee dared to hope that he felt as incredible as she did waking up next to him. "Morning sleepyhead," Brody returned, matching her smile. And what a beautiful smile that was. She took his smile as a good sign. Belinda couldn't find any trace of awkwardness or regret in his expression. "I was up first you know!" "Funny, you looked like you were sleeping five minutes ago," he teased her with a grin. He laughed when she stuck her tongue out at him. "Good come back. Work hard on that one?" he grinned wider at her. She scrunched her nose in mock anger and pursed her lips. She was doing her best to keep from smiling while she tried to think of some sort of retort. The longer he grinned at her like that the more she couldn't focus on a response. Instead she stuck out her tongue and rolled over onto her side putting her back to him. Which, in hindsight, was not the smartest idea! "Noooo. Not…that's…not…fair!" she yelled in between fits of giggles and squirmed as he tickled her sides. The more she squirmed, the more it seemed to encourage him. Her stomach muscles hurt from laughing so much! And he wasn't stopping! She could barely breath! Suddenly he stopped torturing her. She fell back into her pillows wearing the goofiest smile on her face. The burn of her oxygen deprived lungs lessened with each glorious breath. "What?" Bee asked when she noticed him staring at her in a way she didn't think he ever had before. "I was just thinking that was some new years resolution." Belinda couldn't agree more. |
