Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:children, hera, june marris, melpomene, melpomene smith, nicodemus aiolos, npc, pelops

Who: Nick, Melpomene, and anyone else who wants to attend
What: Halloween/Charity Ball
Where: The Aiolos ranch grounds
When: Saturday night on Hallow's Eve, beginning at 8:00 PM
Warnings: None thus far. Tag yourself!

Staring up to the moon, Nick smiled a bit. It was nice and bright, perfect for the occasion. Maybe it came with age, but celebrating the holidays was almost as fun as an adult as they were when he had been a kid.

He was standing in his room, fixing up the last bit of his costume; instead of being one of the five freaking billion vampires out on the lawn, he was going as a gentleman zombie, complete with a bite-riddled top hat and cane. Very sexy.

He adjusted his tie and prepared to go down to his guests when his vision suddenly exploded with white light. Whoa. The next sensation he was aware of was his knees hitting the floor with a rather sharp thud. Whoa, and now, ow. His vision cleared quickly, leaving him dizzy and a little sick.

...That wasn't good...

"Maybe I should toss that pumpkin booze out," he mused, "thought it tasted funny..." Right-o, first on the order then, as he got back up and headed down the stairs without much of a fuss.

During the day, Mel had helped with organizing the caterers and other party set ups, with tables being arranged for auction items, and speakers for DJs. There was the space for the dance floor, and other places for the bar. An area for kids with two inflatables, and all the horses kept far enough away that the ruckus wouldn't disturb them. Parking for cars, treats for anyone who showed up and all the other odds and ends that she and Nick got to run around and tend to because the staff for one reason or another didn't have the answers. She'd been tempted more than once to grab Shadow, Helen and her car keys to hide out at the theater until the party started.

But now that everything was under control, and the host was heading down in costume to the party proper, Mel was getting her daughter and self ready for their own entrance. The little girl appeared to be amused by all the feathers on her outfit, and played with the beak. The muse was simply glad that she'd had enough practice with her daughter now that she was able to get the face paint on without her immediately wiping it off. She smirked at the image her daughter made, an adorable and perfect... chicken head. Most would probably call her a chicken, but the joke was that she was only the head. Mel was the rest of the chicken.

A chicken, with her head cut off.

The fake vertebrae in the back of her hear french twist with the red hair spray, face paint and costuming, she expected it to speak for itself. It was only Shadow she hadn't known how to dress, if at all.

Turning to the dog, she eyed him for a moment as Helen grabbed a loose feather and began to play with it. She arched an eyebrow. "We should make you a wolf for the night. I'd say fox that gets into the chicken coup, but wolf seems better..." How to dye his fur safely though...

A crash was heard, probably from the area of the auction tables. "Uh oh," Helen said very seriously, then glanced to her mother.

"Let's go see what the damage is. We'll have to dress our wolf up later." She sweep her daughter up into her arms, and began to head in the direction of the sound. How many things would go wrong this year?

Shadow, at least for now, would keep to himself that he could just will his fur whatever color she wanted to dye him. And for now, as he rose to his paws and followed behind Mel and Helen to see what the trouble was, he would keep to himself his amusement of her wanting to dress him up like a wolf.

The logic made sense to Mel, and brought her some amusement of her own. She'd tend to that after the current problem.

Stepping into one of the side rooms on the main floor, the room with the tables and auction items, she stopped to stare at the scene before her. A table was completely toppled over, the basket goods scattered, and a mask set Mel had made was partly broken. A man and woman were arguing over who was to blame about the upset, and the volume of their words was getting louder and louder.

Mel simply set her daughter on the floor, then told her to take Shadow over to them. Really, who could yell with an adorable child trying to show off her dog to them?

The pair paused in their argument to stare at the child who eagerly tugged over the canine, just long enough for one short man in a top hat to walk over and ask what was the fuss all about. The two adults grumbled something but didn't seem too keen to admit fault either way to the owner of the party.

Nick shook his head at the retreating pair and bent down to pick up the remnants of the masks.

"We should make them clean it up," Mel mentioned as she came forward, patting Helen and smiling at her. She'd done exactly what she was told to do. The girl seemed ready to run off with the dog, and Shadow lead her away from the mess, though not completely out of the room. Nodding at that, Mel then turned to look at destruction. "I'm not going to be able to save these before the bidding starts."

"And chase off all the money they're willing to spend?" Nick said with a shrug as he swept up the pastries with the help of an employee. "At least now maybe they'll get into a nice fat bidding war. Sorry about the masks, though..."

He paused to shiver, rubbing at his upper arm. "Damn, it's cold tonight."

She frowned slightly, watching as he rubbed his arm. It wasn't that cold. "I might have some others around. Or could offer a customized one." The muse shrugged, not overly concerned about such a matter.

Goosebumps were visible , and he shivered again at the touch of her hand; her fingertips were like ice. Maybe he was getting a cold, wouldn't that be wonderful. "Okay. But if they start something again, we'll kick them out." He turned his attention to the toddler staring up at them, and smiled. "Even with bones and blood, she's still the cutest one here."

Now Mel was watching him carefully, and gently stroked his cheek. This wasn't right. She frowned, and drew his attention back to her. Helen was with Shadow. She could wait for a few moments. "What's wrong?"

"What kind of sick?" she persisted. If he was going to get the rest of the party sick, she was sending him to bed. If it was really some kind of booze... Well, booze normally didn't cause ailments the same way bad juice could.

"It's my official job to worry." She was a mother, and a muse of tragedy. She reached out, offering to take Helen, her head as it were. "I'll set someone to watching you if I have to."

"We were interrupted. I thought about making him a fox or wolf." She shrugged and took Helen, adjusting a strap and some of the feathers. There wasn't really much gore to the younger's costume. Mel saved that mostly for herself.

"Nick?" Mel reached out for him once more, cupping his face to feel his skin as she watched him. With Helen in and she wouldn't be able to really catch him, but maybe she could keep him from something that might result in his skull being smashed on the floor. "{What's wrong?}"

"{I think}... [I need to sit] {down}," he said quietly, his free hand taking a firm grip on her arm to stay steady as he slowly sank down onto his rear, not seeming to think of the guest noticing all around them.

Thankfully there weren't too many guests in the room just yet, and Mel glanced about them to try and find a staff member she knew and trusted. No such luck. Lowering herself some, she set Helen to stand on the ground, with Shadow on her other side, as mother peered father. She was frowning as she watched his face, keeping close and waiting to see what would happen. "{What's wrong? Do you need to go to the hospital?}"

"[We should get you to your bed,]" she mentioned to him, shifting to sit at his side, an arm around his shoulders to try to keep him steady. She'd yell for help if he passed out. Though who would be best to get was still unclear.

"I don't think so either." She kissed his forehead, and murmured that she would be right back. Disappearing from the room, she put Helen in a play pen with some of her toys and Shadow to help keep an eye on her before returning to Nick. She frowned as she looked over him. "What do you think it wrong?"

The party had started and seemed to be going well enough, when June Marris decided to make her own appearance. Partly it was to bring a promised auction item -- one month of marriage counseling -- in its formal form, and partly to see what else was being auctioned.

For now though, she was wandering about the ball in her own period dress, and a simple blue mask. A glass of wine rested in her hand as she considered the couples she saw. It wouldn't hurt business in the least to give them a taste of her abilities...
