Sebastian Wycliffe rides into town.
Who: Sebastian Wycliffe, Isobel Wycliffe, Helene Ellwood - Open to any who are in his way.
Where: Down town New Shelby
When: May 11th, early afternoon
Status: Incomplete
Summary: Sebastian rides into to, looking for his sister.

It had been six months, Sebastian had been trying to strike it rich with several schemes but it didn't really work out as he had planned... yet. He was sure he would get one that got him the money to buy his sister and himself the life he thought they deserved. He had gotten some money, but it was not enough, he wanted... no needed more!

He rode into town ready to talk to Isobel when he realized he wasn't really sure where she was staying at the moment. He dismounted his horse right in the middle of the busiest looking part of New Shelby, a pretty girl like his sister would not be hard to find.

As was her custom, Isobel was only now leaving Reed's House for the first time that day. The number of times the residents of New Shelby caught a glimpse of her before noon were preciously rare. She was dressed lavishly as usual but for once walked with purpose, with none of her characteristic languorous air. She was bound for Mr. Hyde's office, impatient to see if he had received any responses to the advertisement she had placed ten days before. He had promised to bring her any offers of course, and Quinlan Hyde seemed like a man of his word, but the ever-acquisitive Isobel simply could not bide her time any longer. She moved to cross the busy street, narrowly avoiding horses, wagons, and the many passersby. She was quite fond of her shoes and the notion of them being trod upon was insupportable.

All concerns for her wardrobe disappeared, however, when her eyes fell upon a familiar-looking rider only a few feet away.

"S-Sebastian?" Isobel fairly stuttered, stopping dead in her tracks in the exact middle of the road. Several people shot her annoyed glances and one man atop a wagon shouted gruffly to get out of his way but Isobel appeared to hear none of this, gaze locked on her brother's face.

Sebastian believed in luck and was proven that his believes were right. He had just ridden into town not knowing where to go look for Isobel and luck brought his sister to him.

"Isobel." He opened his arms for her to walk into. "You are looking absolutely delicious." He grinned as he winked playfully at his pretty sister.

Holding nothing back in her delight at this unexpected reunion, Isobel practically threw herself into his arms. She hugged Sebastian tightly, closing her eyes to savor the sensation of having her brother back. Six months had felt like a long time, of course, but Isobel hadn't realized just how much she missed him until this moment.

Oblivious to the curious gazes of onlookers, Isobel pulled away just enough to be able to look at him, beaming up into his face. "And you! You look as charming as ever."

"What in heaven have you been up to? I haven't received a letter in weeks!" She caught his hand in hers eagerly, like a greedy child.

Sebastian's smile grew bigger and brighter, it was really good to be back with his sister again and it was great to see her so happy. "I have been using my charm to make us some money, little sister." He had the decency to look a little bit guilty when he addressed the lack of letters. "I wrote them but I didn't get the chance to sent them." He searched his pockets to find the written letters.

Her face still shone from her excitement at this unexpected encounter. She hugged her brother again briefly before moving a few feet so the many annoyed passersby could move around the pair.

"Oh, never mind that now," she said with a wave of one hand, although curious to read what news these belated letters might contain. "I'm just so happy to have you back! We've never been apart for so long."

She continued to smile blissfully up at Sebastian as her mind turned swiftly to this second bit of information which, while clearly secondary, was still of keen interest to her. "Money?" Isobel prompted, relieved that he wasn't going to return home empty-handed as she had feared. She was doing nicely at Reed's House and from a recent transaction with Mr. Seven Smith, of course. Still, she didn't want to have the financial fortunes of both her and her brother resting on her shoulders alone. That was not part of any of Isobel's many plans for their future.

Sebastian smiled when his sister mentioned money. "Do you just love me for my wealth?" He joked as he pulled out the bag of money he had far enough for his sister to see but not far enough for nosy town's people to spot. It was enough for them to live on for a bit but it was not nearly enough to satisfy his thirst for wealth and pay for all the things he wanted to have or the kind of house he wanted to live in.

"I thought you loved your big brother for his charm and devilish good looks." He winked at Isobel as he put the money back. "Did you make some money too, my sweet sister? Maybe won some big poker game?" He had missed their poker games, he had always enjoyed the game and he and his sister were actually pretty good at it. "Maybe we should play with some gullible towns people soon." He suggested as he offered his sister his arm.

Visibly perking up at the sight of the bag of money, Isobel smiled at this remark. It was wonderful not to have to hide her decidedly mercenary sensibilities, not that she generally had much success with that task under any circumstances.

"Foolish boy," she laughed, swatting his forearm playfully. "I love you for all of your virtues and most of your sins." The mention of poker caused her to sigh, however. She had lost several dollars last night to a prospector uncannily able to read her tells. Accepting his arm, Isobel leaned on Sebastian's side briefly, as if reassuring herself that her brother was truly here in the flesh.

"I've been doing quite nicely these past few months, although I'm certain my winnings at poker will never match yours." She turned speculative as they began to stroll, her mind turning over the question of their finances. "What will you do now that you're back?"

Isobel had almost said home but the term didn't feel right while she remained at the brothel and Sebastian had no homestead to speak of. "You will have to play a hand with me at least, before turning your card playing skills on a less suspecting audience."

It felt good to be with Isobel again, she was the only person who could, if she wanted too, keep Sebastian in line. He grinned at her when she told him she loved him, he probably had the best sister in the world.

"Do?" He played with his sister's hand as he pretended to think about what he was going to do. He really had no plans but no need to tell Isobel that. "I came here to spoil my favourite woman in the world." He said even though she was one of the only people who was immune to his charm and silver tongue but he just could not help himself.

It felt wonderful to stroll on her brother's arm again, how had she forgotten how happy she felt in his presence? She was certain everyone they passed wondered at the identity of her handsome, charming brother.

"I like that plan," Isobel replied with a smile, tilting her head slightly to cast a fond glance in his direction. "I like it very much."

"As your sister I feel like I should fuss over you, however. I need to make sure you won't be living in rough conditions with only whiskey and flirtations to subside on." She said this lightly, squeezing his fingers briefly. It was strange, to have someone to worry over again after so many months of going it alone.

"It is good to know you care enough to protect me from a loose life of booze and women." Sebastian had a big grin on his face, he actually liked both very much but he knew very well how to make sure neither would cost him too much money.

"I do need a place to stay though." He knew he probably could easily find a room in a boarding house and even con the owner into letting him stay there cheap and if not the owner he could always charm the owner's wife to still get the room cheap.

A year ago, Isobel might have made some false show of disapproval at his clear love of loose women and liquor. Now, however, she merely laughed at his response, nudging him on the shoulder affectionately. The other girls at the brothel--those that still had family members remaining to them--surely were not blessed with such accommodating relations.

"I wish you could stay with me," Isobel said plaintively, thinking again how odd it was not to have him as a daily presence in her life. They had grown up together, sharing train compartments, tiny rented rooms, and other small quarters as if there were no other existence. "I miss being woken up for midnight poker sessions."

She smiled at the memory, feeling decidedly nostalgic about their former life. "It'll be a relief to know where you are at least, and I can face a quick walk over to the boarding house far easier than having to rely on letters for news of you."

"If you tell me where you live I can still wake you up for midnight poker sessions." Sebastian didn't even know what Isobel did to make a living, which was really odd actually, he used to know everything about his sister's life. "You do have a nice place to live, don't you?" He really cared about his sister and any show of protective love was real and not played.

"I could always arrange a place for two." He grinned as he spoke, his arranging usually meant that he didn't pay for a thing.

The look that Isobel shot her brother at this remark was a confused mixture of apprehension and determination. It had been so long since she had had to explain her current choice of occupation, she had quite forgot that there was anything morally questionable whatsoever about her chosen lot. She weighed her response with uncharacteristic care, but then plunged forward boldly. There was no use trying to use sophistry to hide what she did for a living, Isobel had no use for glib lies for the sake of mere social mores.

"Well, I certainly think it's a nice place ot live," she replied honestly, her chin tilting up a fraction in a defense pose, as if anticipating a negative response to what her next words would reveal. "I'm at Reed's House, earning qutie a tidy income, I might add."

"And while I know how skilled you are at 'arranging' things, I'm quite happy where I am." This was said with a little decisive nod, but her eyes still watched Sebastian carefully, revealing her concern for his opinion.

Sebastian had not expected her to get so defensive at his suggestion, it had been made out of love and concern for his sister after all. "I am sure you make great money and I am not here to get you away from your life and job." True, he would have preferred that not all kinds of men put their grubby paws on his baby sister but he would and could not judge her. "If you are happy where you are then of course you should stay there." Yes, he could do mature if he tried.

For a few moments he didn't say anything then he conjured a cute little smile on his face, the kind that made many girl weak in the knees but he was sure his sister would be immune to it though. "I just wanted to take care of you." For good measure he added a little pout at the end, it could never hurt to pout.

Something stiff and brittle in Isobel's expression softened at this response. She paused and abruptly rose to place an impulsive kiss on his cheek. "I do love you," she said softly, in a rare showing of vulnerability and emotion. "I'm sorry if the past few months have made showing it more difficult."

The following silence came as a relief to her, it provided time to gather her thoughts which had become rather jumbled. She should have known Sebastian would accept her current profession, it worried her that she appeared to be becoming skittish about her occupation. Did she honestly care about the opinion of anyone in New Shelby aside from Sebastian? She liked to think not, but was not as confident on this point as she might have wished.

Her brother's charming smile and following pout amused her and she resisted the urge to rumple his hair affectionately. "I plan on taking care of you too," she replied with a laugh, gazing at him with an open, upturned face. "I think taking care of each other might work out the best for both of us. What do you think?"

"I think that is the best thing we can do." Sebastian pulled his sister close and grinned happily, "first thing you can do is point me toward a good boarding house." He knew he had to get settled before he could do anything else, it was easier to find a good target when he didn't need to worry about sleeping arrangements.

It warmed her, seeing Sebastian's contended smile and Isobel wondered anew how she had managed without him for the last few months.

"This isn't Philadelphia or New Orleans, I'm afraid. Lodging options are limited in New Shelby. There's an inn located across from where I live, and a boarding house further down." She said this thoughtfully, clearly mulling over which would suit him better. "I'm afraid both will expect payment right away, and I don't think even your charming smile is quite the renumeration they will expect."

Her eyes drifted from his face to the location of his money purse. "But then, that doesn't seem a problem for you at the moment?" This was asked as a question, but it was clear Isobel was simply seeking reassurance again. Those first few years after their parents had died and money was so tight and life so uncertain still haunted her.

Money wasn't a problem at the moment and because he wanted to live in New Shelby for a while he was going to be good and pay for lodgings but he would find a way to live for free or find someone to pay for him. All that would take some careful planning though.

"I can pay for a place to stay." He reassured Isobel, "and I will find ways to get even more money." He didn't offer to pay for his sister but he would make sure that she would never want for anything again. He squeezed her hand, "We will be rich, little sister, you'll see."

More than anything else in this world, Isobel wished to be rich. Gloriously rich, sickening rich. Rich enough never to have the thought of money bother her again. While her savings certainly were far healthier than the last time the siblings had met, she felt she had a long way to go still.

"Of course we will be," Isobel replied, with more confidence than she truly felt. If charm and cleverness were worth anything, she felt certain that she and Sebastian could at least meet with some success. "Just make sure to keep things above board. I don't want to stay up nights worrying that you've been hauled off to prison."

She meant it. While more than ready to engage in any money-making scheme, illicit or otherwise, Isobel felt that she could not face the risk that her brother might wind up in jail.

Sebastian tried to look shocked, "Me? In jail?" He never thought he would do anything that would get him send to jail. True, charming people out of their money might not be really honest, but illegal? They gave him their money, he didn't threaten them or put a gun to their head after all.

He stopped and turned to face Isobel. "You will not have to worry about me, dear sister, I will be as honest as I can." He kissed her on her forehead, it was the best promise he could make.

"I believe you," Isobel said hastily, worried that she had inadvertently offended him. "But it is a sister's lot to fret and admonish, whatever the case may be."

She smiled up at him, hoping that her expression would be taken as the apology it was. What was the matter with her? Bringing up responsibilities and the ever-present fear of public disgrace. Perhaps she was not so secure in her current line of work as she believed.

The kiss seemed to silence many of her anxious questions and she closed her eyes for a moment, forcing herself to let go of those doubting concerns that remained behind. "I know you will. I'm sorry to fuss over you so." She responded with a breezy smile, trying to strike a nonchalant tone. She caught his hand in hers and gave it a quick, reassuring squeeze.

"You can fuss as much as you want over me, but there is really no need to worry." Sebastian squeezed Isobel's hand in return. "Especially not today, today is a day to celebrate." He winked at her before he started to move again. "Maybe a celebratory game of poker?"

It felt like he had not been gone at all, in a good way. He loved his sister and they still got on as good as ever even after six months. He didn't think anything could destroy the bond he had with Isobel, probably not even jail, not that he could believe he would ever end up there.

On a rare day off Helene found herself downtown picking up some supplies for her family, she came out of the store with her hands full of paper bags. Some days she felt invisible especially on her lonesome, when the city is busy. Today was one of them. How many more people were going to walk towards then don’t move out of the way the last minute? Now if she were with her big brother, Deputy James, people would take notice.

As she turned the corner she did not see a man heading directly towards her that they walked into each other making Helene drop a bag, immediately going down to pick her supplies “I’m so sorry.” She said in a low voice, not sure if she should expect to hear a response.

Sebastian was still searching his pockets for Isobel's letters when the woman bumped into him. "No problem." He said with one of his most charming smiles, it was always a good idea to charm any female one meets. "Let me help you." He bend down to pick up some of her supplies too.

For some reason Helene slightly hesitated to take her belongings off the man, but reached her hands out to do so "Thank you, Sebastian." She noticed his rather charming smile again so she returned the favor. When he mentioned travelling she beamed. She traveled a bit when she was younger while Shelby was being rebuilt "It must have been marvelous travelling, seeing different cities." Helene felt somewhat warm inside when he mentioned his little sister, thought it also reminded her of her oldest brother, she frowned for a second, then quickly let it disappear "That is very sweet of you, I am sure you sister will be excited to see you again."

Sebastian made sure to touch her hand slightly when he handed Helene her belongings. "Travelling is really nice but it is always good to come home with family." He spotted the frown but did not say anything about it, he was good at reading people but he wasn't here to con this nice young woman... yet. "I am sure she will be excited, my sister and I are really close."

The man touching her hand did not go unnoticed, her heart skipped a beat as she glanced down to their hands, thought she relaxed when she had her belongings back. Looking back up to him, still with a smile "Oh, I know what you mean, I travelled a bit when I was a youngster." Helene gazed at Sebastian, there was... something about this man that she was drawn to, for some reason she wanted to know everything about him. She had the strangest feeling they had a lot in common, but apart from her brothers, she was terrible at reading men. "Oh I am really glad to hear that, just like my brothers and sister, well, most." She had no idea why she started to think about Theo again, she hadn't for a long time and the thought was hurting her once more, wishing the pain would go away. All this time talking to this nice young man, she realised he would not know her name "I am sorry." She let out an awkward laugh as she balanced her bags to extend her hand "I haven't given you my name. I am Helene."

Sebastian took her hand and brought it to his lips in a very theatrical fashion he kissed Helene's knuckles. "It is a honour to meet you, Helene. My name is Sebastian Wycliffe." He released her hand, all charm and friendliness. Cute girl with good manners, they usually were the easiest to charm and Sebastian just could not help himself.

"The name fits you." His classical upbringing made him think of Helen of Troy, he could always explain that to her later, which girl didn't love to hear that her name was also the name of the prettiest princess in mythology? "A pretty name for a pretty girl."

Maybe after all she could not read him like she thought as Sebatastian taking her hand and kissing her knuckles completely caught her off guard, she was sure she looked like a fool for that grin that was stuck on her face, she was still staring down at their hands even after he released them, such a gentleman, it has been a long time since she had met one. Lifting her eyes so their gaze could meet, she finally found the words "Pleasure to meet you Mister Wycliffe and such a charming man, I am at awe." The last of the sentence were out before she knew it, but perhaps it was her intention to let him know.

"Thank you, I am quiet fond of it too." She could not tell if she was saying her words correctly, though when he told her she was pretty, she did not have a reply, only a blush creeping through. She surely hoped she was able to hide it.

Sebastian was great at reading people, of course, it was how he made his living after all. He noticed her grin and her blush but even if he had not been able to notice them her words were clear enough and they let him know that his charming ways were getting to Helene.

Charming. Very charming. Helene thought for sure she was already under his spell, could he really be her prince charming? She shook her head slightly, they had only just met, could it happen that fast? Helene was a girl who would easily fall in love if they had the right charm. Thinking about this made her think of Mister Whiteley. Although nothing would probably happen between them because he was her boss; would she be betraying her fondness for the man if she wanted to know more about newcomer Sebastian Wycliffe?

"Your parents brought you up well." She commented, though she quickly regretted it, she knew not to bring up parents unless you really know them, she seriously hoped she had not upsetted him at all. Did he just compare her to a princess? This man knew how to work her. She desperately wanted to get to know this charming prince, but she were to afraid to ask him for lunch or anything. Besides, he much be eager to get back to his sister. "Your sister must be waiting for you." She stumbled out, immediately hating herself, she did not want to part him, not just yet.

Sebastian could guess what was going through Helene's mind, maybe it was just his big ego but he definitely felt like she wanted to get to know him better. He, of course, could not read minds but he had not been wrong often when it came to women.

"My parents were very good people." He said showing a little bit of real emotions, they had been great people and he had loved them very much. "My sister is probably waiting, yes, but maybe we can continue this nice conversation at a later date." He suggested, if she said no then there were many more fish in the sea, but he was sure she would say yes. "Maybe some lunch or dinner later this week?"

Helene was very glad that she did not upset Sebastian about his parents and was fond of him for saying they were good people.

She nodded when he explained about his sister, James and his wife were probably wondering where she had gotten to with their supplies "My brother and his wife are waiting for me too." She paused, very grateful he asked, but also surprised, after all it had been a long time since a man had asked her, and she certainly did not want him finding another woman before giving him the chance, she ran through dates in her head to when she was free "Lunch will probably be best. I work but I have lunch from 12 to 1, any day you are free I am sure will be okay with me."

"We are very lucky to just have one hour at all." She smiled, then noticed his pout, that was surely to have her sucked in, as if she weren't already "Goodbye?" They were still strangers, Helene was not sure what he had meant by saying goodbye. Normall she would not think of accepting someone else for company for dinner, she would rather spend dinner with her family, it was tradition when it came to the Ellwood family "Dinner can be hard..." She thought out loud "My family like to eat dinner together... "She paused "But I am sure I can persude my big brother for one night. Later this week, yes." Her smile turned into a grin, she was actually looking forward to a night out with this seemingly perfect stranger.

A family dinner was not something Sebastian had in mind, he wanted to spent some time with the pretty girl to get to know her and find out if and how he could or would use her. Not all he did was for personal gain but a lot of it was. He liked pretty women, he liked to play with them but usually that was all he did and when a pretty woman was thrown in his lap like this he just could not help himself.

"We can have a nice dinner here in town, at the time and place of your choice." He suggested, the fact she mentioned a big brother he stored for later, a big brother sometimes meant big trouble. "You can tell your brother I won't keep you out too late, I'll even walk you home." He kept playing the part of the perfect gentleman.

Helene hesitated again, sure she wanted to spend time with this newcomer, to get to know him, though she had a feeling a lunch date would be far more appropiate. She was not the one to stay out late only for special occasions. She ran through the nights in her head to when she was available, she did not have much of a social calendar so anytime and the place... she nodded at his suggestions

"Well, how 'bout Thursday or Friday night? I am free most nights. There is a nice restuarant in town that you may like, you can choose the time, I am sure it will suit me." She smiled when he offered to walk her home on the night "Oh, I am sure James won't mind, really."

Sebastian watched Helene as she thought and spoke, her hesitation told him that he was making her do something she usually might not do, he was good at what he did. His ego inflated a little bit more as she went along with his suggestion to make it dinner instead of lunch, his charm never failed!

"Friday is perfect." He started, making sure he didn't seem like he was pushing her, charming women was an art and pushy men never got what they wanted. "How about 7 o'clock? We will have the whole evening to get to know each other." Another cute little smile was on his face making him almost look like an innocent boy, something he surely was not.

Helene beamed when Sebastian mentioned Friday night ideas were already running through her mind on what they can do and what they would talk about, the sooner they met the better "7 o'clock is perfect, Sebastian!" She exclaimed, she could not hold her excitement. It had been sometime since she had dinner with a man, a charming man for that matter of fact, that was not part of her family.

When she saw him giving his cute little smile she felt weak, there was something about this stranger alright. Maybe he is that perfect stranger she has been waiting for, she was still beaming "Where would you like to meet? At the restuarant?"

Helene's excitement told Sebastian that picking Friday had been a good idea, it would give the girl time to imagine the evening and think of him. Yes, he was pretty proud of his achievement of the day, he charmed a pretty girl and he hadn't even been back in town for an hour.

"The restaurant would be perfect." He liked that suggestion, meeting her brother might not be a good idea just yet, first he needed Helene to believe that he was perfect. When she did her brother would have to be pretty special to change her mind, or at least that was what he had noticed with other girls. They may love and trust their brothers, girls were pretty stubborn he knew, the more a brother or parent disapproved the more the girl came running to him. "Where can I find this restaurant?"

Helene's smile did not disappear, she was already planning their night away, and very glad that he approved of the restuarant. "Oh it is not very far from here. Turn a couple of corners and you're there."

She had been so mesmermised by this charming fellow that she had forgotten her shopping bags in her hands, they were getting awkward for holding so long, she shifted them in her hands.

"I'll be right on time this Friday evening." Sebastian promised, he noticed Helene shifting her bags and his face turned a little guilty. "I have been keeping you too long, haven't?" He didn't feel guilty of course but he had noticed the effect that could have on girls.

Helene felt relieved when he mentioned he'll be right on time, she nodded "7 o'clock, Friday night." She repeated, only to make sure of herself. She noticed Sebastian's look of guilt as she hugged the bags "Oh no, well a little, my brother may be wondering where his supplies has gotten too." She let out a reassuring smile "But I should get on going, and I am sure your sister will be waiting too."

"We better not let our siblings wait." Sebastian gave her another sweet smile, "I will see you Friday." He bowed to her as if she was a princess. "I can't wait to see you."
