Workin' Lady

Who: Helene Ellwood and Grayson Whiteley [OPEN]
Where: the Bank
When: Just after 4PM, Saturday
Status: Incomplete
Summary:

Helene let out a very short yawn, covering her hand over her mouth while doing so. ‘Twas going on after 4PM on Saturday and she was busily cleaning her area and closing the bank. She went to collect her belongings. Most of the time Helene prefers to stay at home with her family, but once in awhile she would like to go out the town, see what is there.

And who better to accompany her? She stepped around the customer service desk about to find her boss.

Grayson was working on some paper work in his office upstairs. The bank had two floors, the top floor contained his office, his brother in law Arthur's office and the building's bathrooms. The downstairs was basically an open area except for the vault in the back and the teller's desk. There was also a desk down there for people who were opening up accounts or needed assistance that wasn't just day to day transactions. The set up was nice and classy. The wood dark, the lighting gentle and his employee's polished. He liked the gleam of the brass fixings that were all around and the queue poles that kept everybody in line. Grayson Whiteley loved his bank.

He knew that Helene was downstairs busy closing up and he had intended on staying late today. There was lots to do and never enough time to do it. He was still sorting through accounts of his father's associates and picking apart slowly the things that went on behind the scenes. He knew that his brother in law knew a fair bit about what was going on with all of this, but he had gone home to his wife and rightly so, so they could have some alone time. It was hard to do that sometimes, considering they all lived together in the one house.

Hearing Helene's footsteps on the stairs though, he looked up at his door, expectin her knock at any moment. There weren't many places that he could be, so finding him wouldn't be difficult for her.

Helene and her co-workers always knew where Mister Whiteley would be at the end of the day, he would be busy in his office. As she was making her way upstairs different thoughts were going through her mind. She did not feel like going home straight away, she would not mind seein' the town a bit and would love Mister Whiteley to accompany her. Some days though he is far too busy for her.

She had finished walking the stairs and had made her way to her boss' office. She could feel her tummy turn and had no idea why. Mister Whiteley had always had that effect on her. She knew he was her boss and that is what confused her greatly. She shrugged it off before knocking on the door "Mister Whiteley?"

"Come on in Helene." He said to the door when she called through it. He turned back to his work, thinking she was telling him she was going home for the day. So many new accounts. People were starting to reap the rewards of New Shelby becomigng a great new town and that's something he liked to see. The people he deserved what they worked for, and they all worked so hard.

Filling out another application form for a widow who had just lost her husband but found he'd been stashing money away in an old piano nobody ever played he was amused at all the stories that he heard about how people came to have so much money. It was amazing what people were willing to tell a stranger.

Lookig up when the door opened, Grayson smiled his awkward smile at Helene. She was a good worker and he was fond of her. She'd been with the bank for a while now and her presence made a difference for everybody. The customers enjoyed her greatly. Her family was well known, her brother being part of the law and all. It was nice to have somebody connected to the sherriff's office...made for a quick response if there was something awry.

Helene stepped in, not letting her hand off the handle, she smiled in an instant to see him. She noticed he had that awkward smile of his on that she knew far too well, she wandered what gets to him feelin' awkward. She cleared her throat.

"Thought I'd let you know I have cleared up, Mister Whiteley and that I will be on my way."

She had a feelin' what his answer will be if she asked him to accompany her. He looked busy with piles of papers cluttering his desk. He should be able to spare a few hours, though she waited for his response.

Grayson's smile was just awkward. From birth he'd never been able to just really smile properly and when he was older his parents made a point of pointing it out to him that he never looked natural when he smiled. He'd practiced constantly in the mirror but never could get it to look just right. Only when he truly laughed did anybody see what his whole face looked like when he relaxed. It wasn't his fault really, just like some people were born with faces that tended to frown naturally.

"Thank you Helene. You did a good job today." Grayson believed in positive re-enforcement. When you told your employee's every day that they were doing a good job, it helped them realize they were part of a team and that they were appreciated. "And thank you again for volunteering to work on Saturday, I know some of the other's don't like working it, even if it is four hours."

He did have a lot of work to do. There was always work to be done....it wasn't going to do itself either. When she lingered though he looked up from what he was doing. "Is there something you need Helene?" he asked. He had told the girl to call him by Grayson, all the other employee's did, but she insisted on Mister Whiteley and so he'd given up that battle months ago.

Helene's smile widened as he thanked her especially for Saturday. Some employees looked down on her whenever she offered to work on the one day they liked to have off. It never worried Helene. All she would have been doing is spend time with her family, which she always do. And an excuse to spend some time with Mister Whiteley is a good reason as any.

"Oh, you don't have to keep on thanking my, Mister Whiteley, it is the least I can do. Don't want you workin' on your lonesome now." She admitted.

Helene had drifted off in the silence, but snapped out of it when she heard his voice again, she felt her words caught up. Some of the co-workers going out, they told her to forget about asking their boss but she thought it wasn't fair on him, once she got herself together "Oh, I, uh, was wonderin'" She started to fiddle with her fingers, a habit that always occured when she was nervous "If you would like to spend sometime in town? I know you are always busy, Mister Whiteley, but I am sure you can spare an hour or so?" She rambled, after all, she was nervous.

"Well if I had to I would. Sometimes you need to sacrifice your personal things for your business, especially when you work in such a demanding business." Grayson replied with a nod. It was nice though, to have a person willing to work the four hours on Saturdays. It was in the middle of the day and it was a little awkward. He considered figuring out a different time to be open on the weekend but decided against it for now.

Raising his eyebrows while he waited for her to answer, he brushed a hand through his hair when she finally did ask. "Er..." he knew that he should probably finish up some work at the bank, it was a lot to do and he didn't want to have to take it home, but he supposed some fresh air for an hour would be okay. And he knew he needed to show good will to his employees. "Well where are you planning on going Helene? I suppose I can accompany you if it's only an hour or so." he nodded his head, stretching his arms above his head and then bringing them down rubbing at his weak hand a little. It bothered him sometimes and the Doc hadn't been able to tell him anything that would help out with it.

Helene nodded, very grateful for ending up with a boss like Mister Whiteley thinking of his employees and not only himself, many of the reasons why she admired him.

Helene thought about where she wanted to get lunch. They all had their usual place to go, but today she felt like something different, probably something small "Hm good question, possible the Inn maybe? Then we could eat outside?" She nodded "It is always good to get some fresh air, Mister Whiteley." She watched him for a moment including him rubbing his hand, she was concerned, "Are you alright?"

"Just the normal acheyness." Grayson replied to the comment about his hand. When asked, he was never one to lie about what had happened to him as a child, and it was pretty much common knowledge around the bank that sometimes Grayson needed to have heavier things carried for him. Arthur, his brother in law, tended to take on that burden. He was self concious about it, but he couldn't change the past if he wanted to.

"Oh you're hungry? I thought you just went to pop around to the shops." he said thinking if he could tear himself away long enough to go and have a meal. He'd be eating dinner as soon as he got home though, in just a few hours. "I already told my servant I'd be home for dinner tonight Helene, I don't want to put her out after having told her to make me something...perhaps just a stroll then? It's four, a little late for lunch." he asked and remarked.

"More the reason to take a break." Helene replied politely, she wondered why there was nothing to help his aches, if only she could help.

She wanted to kick herself, he was right, it was late, she should have known better. She was still a little peckish though, but maybe that stroll will take her mind off it. "I am sorry, time is flying by me before I know it. Yes a stroll sounds lovely, are you ready or would you like me to wait a bit?"

"We can go now Helene." he replied standing up and reaching for his coat. There was no point in putting it off and they could get more done. Putting his coat on, he closed some confidential files and stepped around his desk, gathering his keys and placing his money pouch in his pocket.

He motioned for her to go first and then followed her out and down the steps from the second floor to the first. Taking a quick survey of the bank he then lead them from behind the counter to the door and opened the door for her to go through, following her and then locking up behind him. "So where to first? Perhaps we can drop by the General store and get you some cookies or something to eat if you're hungry?" he offered.

Helene nodded as Grayson allowed her to go out first, she did so and made sure he was still with her as she went down the stairs, she too made a quick survey of the bank. The bank was like a second home to her, she cared for it deeply like she did with Mister Whiteley, she would not know what to do if anything bad ever happened with it, she would know how devestated her boss will be. She reached outside and watched him lock the door, when he suggested where to go, she smiled,

"Have a sweet tooth, Mister Whiteley?" Maybe she should be calling him Grayson or Gray now that they are out of the building, sometimes she just couldn't help it though. "The General store sounds wonderful, may pick up some treats for my nephews and niece."

"Sometimes. Mostly, I have a rich tooth. I like rich foods." he replied placing his hands behind his back and clasping them as he normally did to walk. Grayson tended to ask his house lady to make fairly hearty foods. He wasn't sure how he managed it, perhaps it was just that he was so busy all the time, that he didn't find the food to go to his waistline. He was in fairly good shape he had to say, for how on in years he was getting. He knew at least Clara thought so. Or...he paid her to think so, Grayson wasn't sure.

"How is your family doing?" he asked politely now that she'd brought them up, walking down the steps and towards the General Store. His sister and Arthur though would sometimes try, knew they'd never have children and Grayson missed the pitter patter of little feet around him. He wished for his own children. He wished for a lot of things.

Helene smiled at his mention of a rich tooth, she glanced towards him, he did manage to keep in good shape and she liked that, though looks was not the reason she liked him, it mostly had to do with his personality.

She now beamed at the mention of her family, she loved them, they meant the world to her "They are doing splendid. James babies are growing up so fast, little Annie (his daughter) is an angel just over one now.”

"That's good that they're doing splendid. I haven't seen your brother around in a while but good to hear that they're well. Always amazing when kids grow up." He commented looking around in the bright sunlight of the day. He felt tired, but the sun felt nice and warm on his back. He wasn't really too fond of sweating, but sometimes it was just too hot in this small little town.

"And you're doing well then at home? Everything is happy?" He asked.

"It is amazing, they grow so fast don't they? James is a proud pa." When Grayson mentioned he hadn't seen her brother around for awhile, she thought of a crazy one, she ran the idea through her head and kept telling herself it couldn't be all that crazy "Well, I am sure James would love to see you again, why don't you come 'round when you are not busy for a drink or two perhaps?" She managed to stop herself from rambling, feeling slightly nervous about his answer.

Helene nodded at his second question "All is very well and the happiest we have ever been I think, Mister Whiteley, thank you. And yourself?"

Grayson considered. It was hard sometimes in a small community like New Shelby to not cross that line between work and friends. Considering he was her boss, but he had known James for a while to accept her invitation made it difficult. "Perhaps one day when we're all not busy." he answered without commitment. It was the safest bet really. It didn't say yes or no, but it left it polite.

"I'm glad you're so happy Helene, knowing that you are, makes me very pleased." he said gently and then nodded, "I'm quite happy, been spending my time with some lovely people and just making the most out life, when I'm not at work." he joked.

Helene was delighted that he considered coming over, no doubt James would be happy with a visitor too, if only it were closer, but Helene knew not to push "Perhaps for a Sunday lunch maybe?" She thought her ideas out loud. It had been sometime since Grayson Whiteley had been over.

"Thank you" She paused as she was about to call him Grayson, she was able to stop herself "Mister Whiteley, I am glad that you are." Maybe one of the reasons she is intent on calling him Mister Whiteley is to remind her that he is her boss, not someone random who she is quiet fond of, it helps her slip back into reality, that there may never be a chance between them. "That's wonderful that your life is well, I presume your family are good?" She knew when he said 'lovely people' that it meant his family, but she could not wonder if there were anyone else that fell into that category.

"Perhaps one Sunday yes." he said again, without commitment. He had his own family, be it only his brother and sister, but still, his own family to take care of as well. His Sundays were precious to him too of course. It was his only day off.

Of course he'd meant his family but he'd also meant Clara. He'd missed her so very much over the last little while though, not having been able to see her because he'd been so busy. He made a point of making a mental note to call on her during the next weekend and to buy her a present. Perhaps on Sunday. "Yes my family is well. Obviously you see Arthur all the time, but my sister is good too. She's happy at home right now I think." he replied with a nod.

They had made it past the saloon and now where coming up to the store. He stepped in front of her quickly to open the door before she could reach for it. Grayson was always still a gentleman, no matter where his mind was.

"That is wonderful we have agreed" Helene knew that Sunday's was there only day off so she was sure he had better things to do then spending it with an employee, but she sure did not mind when he made the time.

She agreed about Arthur and the mention of his sister made her smile, it has been awhile since she has seen her "I am glad, maybe you can mention to your sister if she has the time to chat to let me know? It has been awhile."

When they reached the General store she smiled to see him open the door for her, walk up and as she was next to him, she looked at him "Thank you." She knew they were a tad close, as much as she liked it she quickly walked in the store and looked around "I think... I might spoil my nephews and niece tonight." She thought out loud with a grin.

"I'll mention it to her Helene." He said with a nod. Families in New Shelby all seemed to know each other, and it was hard to not know a family when you employed one of it's members.

Grayson just nodded to her as she walked by him, "Not a problem." he replied and then followed her in. Thinking that perhaps Clara would like some chocolates. Or perhaps another dress. He was slowly running out of ideas as to what to get his...his....his lover? "I'm sure you're their favorite aunt Helene. They must just adore you." He said wandering over to an aisle that had some gifts, pondering over them.

Helene chuckled when he said she was their favorite aunt, as she wandered over to the gifts isle as well"I would like to think so, although, do not let Lilah hear that." The only problem having young nephews and niece is that they do get spoiled regularly, she thought about what they have not received just yet "But I do love them and glad I am living with James so I get to see them every day."

She spied her boss pondering over some gifts, curiously, "Looking for anything in particular, Mister Whiteley?"
