Who: Phoebe Reed & Donnie Dooger
Where: Reed's House
When: May 4, 1867; Very late.
Status: Complete
Summary: Phoebe's favorite outlaw stops for a visit, which ends in anger instead of fun nekkid times.

A once prospective client had been forced from her establishment just a moment before, and Phoebe Reed was a frustrated woman in that moment. Removing men from the premises wasn't exactly unheard of, and while not enjoyed, if never bothered her quite this much. The man had been one she'd chatted with in town before. At the time of their chat he'd seemed so normal, almost kind even. But then he'd arrived at Reed's House with nothing but ugly words about her. Worse then that though, ugly words about her workers, about her friends.

Needless to say it had her in a bit of a poor mood. Though she was excellent at pushing aside her true feelings and putting on a charming face for clients, so she worried not about any of them realizing. Not wanting any of the others who weren't currently with clients of their own to realize, she'd decided it was a good moment to step into the back and have a smoke.

She pushed the door mostly closed behind her, leaving a crack open so she could better hear what was happening inside, slumping against the house. It took her a moment to get the hand rolled cigarette lit, but she refuses to acknowledge that her hand had a slight shake to it. Refused to acknowledge that the man she'd thought to be kind turned out to be vile, like most, because it wasn't worth the thought. She knew that once she'd had a drag or two the shake would disappear, same as it always did when someone, always someone she'd thought was kind or a friend, finally manage to shake her feelings.

Phoebe closed her eyes and she pulled in the burning relieve of the cigarettes smoke, completely lost to it and taking no notice in the man arriving at the back entrance.

[ooc: I thought it made sense for him to arrive at the back door better then the front, but I'm happy to change it if you disagree hun!]

"You outta not be smokin' them damn things. They'll kill ya." Donnie stepped out from behind a neighboring building and into the moonlight so that Phoebe could see him. It was difficult to distinguish the smirk on the man's face from his mustache, especially with so little light; however, the tone in his voice was clearly amused.

On this night, as with all nights when there was need for camoflauge, the outlaw was dressed all in black, from his boots to the hat perched atop his head. An unsuspecting and otherwise distracted person would simply overlook the shadows made by Donnie's figure moving through the darnkess.

After separating himself from the rest of his gang at the saloon, Donnie had made his way across the back streets to the brothel, where he had planned to surprise his ally with a visit. There had been rumors circulating that an outlaw by the name of Bones was in town, and Donnie was curious to see if Phoebe had any information on the man.

Coming to a stop in front of the back entrance, the outlaw surveyed the Madam in the minimal light. "You look like hell," he stated bluntly. Though the man didn't say the actual words, what he clearly meant was 'What's wrong?'

Phoebe's eyes snapped open a little quicker then they should have, and their was a tension to her back when the voice sounded. The tension however melted away when she realized who it was and what they'd said. So her answering reply came out just as amused, "they got a mighty long list of competitors then."

She flashed him a smile when she saw what he was wearing, then smashed the cigarette out under the heel of her boot. She was surprised by the visit, but it wasn't an unwelcome surprise by any means. She didn't however have much to offer him in the ways of gossip on Bones. Not yet at least.

Phoebe pushed off the house when the outlaw came closer. Shaking her head a little at his blunt phrasing. "Such a sweet talker," though the words should have been sarcastic, they weren't. Instead they were simply amused again. She heard the underlaying question, but left it unanswered aside from a smile that read 'I'm fine'.

"Wasn't expecting you tonight," and this time it was her turn for underlaying questions. This time in the form of 'Is everything alright?'

His smirk only broaded at that. "Ain't that the God's honest truth," he agreed.

Brown eyes tracked her movements when she pushed away from the building, but other than that he remained straight and motionless, a habit he had formed when adventuring through the darkness. </i>Move only when ya need to, otherwise make like a statue</i>; his brother had taught him that years ago. The older man had taught him many lessons, actually, most of which had been turned back on Billy the night Donnie shot him.

In a humorless way it entertained him, the fact that his brother had basically trained Donnie how to kill him, and as Donnie stood there in the darkness watching Phoebe and listening to her speak, he tried his best not to think on how much Billy had changed him over the years.

"Didn't figger I needed a written invitation," was his retort. Sometimes he sent word ahead that he and his gang were stopping by, sometimes he didn't. Usually the unplanned visits were more rewarding than the planned; however, by the irritation obvious in the brothel madam's posture, Donnie doubted this visit would be so grandly rewarding.

A particularly loud group of men passed by the front of the building then. Their jovial and obviously drunken faces could be seen through the alley in which Donnie stood. Noticing that he was in possible danger of being seen by these brutes, and knowing they could be likely to inform the Law or investigate themselves, Donnie quickly stepped closer to the building, concealing himself behind the tall bushes that leaned against the brick.

He glanced at Phoebe, eyebrows raised. "You gonna invite a fella in or what?"

Though she was still, in her own way, hurt by the bastard who'd come in, she wouldn't let it ruin what could be a fantastic visit. Phoebe rather enjoyed Donnie's visit when they weren't planned quite a bit more. Things seemed to be better then, not so hurried or worrisome.

"Course you don't," she replied honestly. Still talking quiet so it didn't travel past his ears, "you and yours are always welcome here." Phoebe would likely stay a little tense until things got interesting, but she wasn't one to hold on to things in the midst of fun and pleasure. Why spoil something good when you didn't have to?

She heard the men passing and wasn't surprised when the outlaw stepped further into the shadows. If anything it made her smile in an amused sort of way, especially since she could just barely tell he'd lifted his eyebrow. She pulled the back door open then, stepping in, "well, come on then. Best be gettin' in here 'fore they take notice of us."

Booted feet thumped against the hollow wooden floor as Donnie stepped inside. He pushed the door closed behind him, sliding the bolt into place to lock it, and followed the madam through the corridor to the foyer. Squinting against the sudden change in lighting, the outlaw paused a moment to take in the surroundings. A few of the whores were still milling about, mingling with lonely and horny men, but otherwise the place was quiet. Comforting, even.

"Slow night?" He questioned in his gruff voice. "Don't look like much of a party." Without invitation, Donnie flopped down in one of the empty chairs lining the wall, the cool black leather feeling good against his heated skin. He removed the hat from his head and balanced it on his knee, stretching his legs out in front of him as he did so.

Phoebe had slipped out of her practical, but highly unfashionable, cowboy boots while he locked the door. Heading to the foyer in bare feet instead of slipping on a pair of fancy slippers, she made no noise compared to his thundering. She offered a smile to the workers and clients who happened to look up and over at them when they entered.

"Not so slow, no." Not their busiest night ever, but not slow either. Slow nights found them with only one or two, or no clients. She stood in the entrance to the sitting room, amused as he flopped himself down into one of the chairs. "Why didn't you hear mister, parties happen upstairs in these parts."

While Phoebe spoke, Donnie took a moment to work the kinks out of his stiff neck. Pretending to be a midnight statue tended to make muscles tense up. A grin turned up one side of his face upon hearing her last comment.

"I did hear that," he replied, going along with her little joke. "I think I might be familiar with them kinda parties."

[I just read the changes in his userinfo, and Phoebe is not amused by the cooking comment. I however am, highly. XD]

"You lookin' to have one of them sort of parties tonight?" As she asked her voice seemed to take on a bit of a purr, though her face stayed in it's friendly smile.

Her dark eyes watched him as he worked out the kinks on his own for a moment, before she slid into the room. Thankful yet again for her slim stature as she slid into the small space between the wall and chair he occupied, allowing her access to better work out the kinks for him.

[hee. was hoping you would be. XP]

A contented groan made its way from the man's throat, and he let his eyes drift closed as Phoebe's hands worked the tension out of his neck and shoulders. Just like any other normal man, Donnie had certain instincts and needs that needed to be attended to - however, he hadn't forgotten the purpose of his visit.

"I might can be persuaded to join in on one," he replied, allowing himself to relax a little more. "I actually came here for some information. Rumor says a guy by the name of Bones is in town. Him and his gang." Donnie felt his fists clench around the arm of the chair just thinking about the outlaw. "You heard anything? He ain't been by here, has he?" It wasn't even known to Donnie whether he was in love with Phoebe or not - maybe he was, maybe he wasn't - but either way, he was fiercely protective over the woman, and just the thought of Billy Bones setting his hands on Donnie's property - well, it was enough to get any man riled up.

Pleased, and slightly amused, by his groan Phoebe continued working his muscles. Making a man groan in a good way was always something the woman had been sort of smug about.

"Suppose I'll just have to work on persuading you then," she sounded somewhat amused again. Her hands continued to work as her mind kicked in, trying to come up with anything she might have heard. "Haven't got much to share," she admitted after a moment. "Nobody stopping lately has made any whisper 'bout him or his gang." There was always at least a whisper after a few days, so they must not have been in town too long. "No, he ain't been here." Though it was unlikely she'd turn the man away from her employees if he stopped in, she didn't suppose it was necessary to tell Donnie since he seemed.. tense at the thought.

He wasn't sure whether he was pleased with this news or not. Part of him was disappointed that Phoebe had no new information to offer him, but the other part - the jealous man part - was relieved that Bones hadn't yet visited the brothel.

"Keep an ear out, will ya?" Donnie clenched his jaw, knowing she probably wouldn't obey what he said next. If she even listened to his words, the man knew it would be her will that decided the outcome, and not his selfish want. "And I don't want you servin' him or none of his men, neither." Clearly his tone was not a question, but a demand. He didn't care if any of the other whores fucked Bones and the other gang. Phoebe was his.

"Always do," Phoebe replied. Already she was thinking out the best way to put out feelers, try to gather up something useful before he came to visit again. Though when Donnie started to speak again the thoughts stopped. Matter of fact, the madame's hands paused in their work as she took in his demand. "Did you really just say that?" She sounded like she was annoyed working up to pissed. "Who're you to be tellin' me what I can and can't do now?" Her hands left him entirely, finding there way to her hips as she wiggled out from behind the chair and stood to the side of it.

So much for trying to relax. His brow furrowed in annoyance as he stared up at Phoebe. It was obvious she was pissed, and normally said pissyness was aimed toward someone other than Donnie. Not this time. But this was something he wasn't going to back down on. If Bones laid his grubby paws on the madam, Donnie wasn't so sure he would want the queen whore anymore.

Of course, he wasn't going to say that out loud. Phoebe may be the madam of a brothel and a whore in her own right, but Donnie knew when to shut his mouth.

"Yeah, I did just say it," he spat. "If you fuck him, it'd be just the same as you takin' this here knife on my hip and stabbin' me in the back with it." The night was already ruined, so why waste the energy trying to make things better?

[omg, lame. so lame. i had a big long reply and then it ate it. ate it! evil! also lame because this took me so long and bones is gone, but whateva.]

It was for the best that he'd kept that particular thought to himself, as there was a good chance Phoebe would have sent something flying at his head. She had a bad habit of just reacting when things made her especially mad, after all. Wasn't a big fan of thinking things through or worrying about the v.

Her dark red lips parted, a particularly nasty insult ready to throw at him, and then her mouth snapped shut. While she was clearly still annoyed at him telling her what to do, in the new context, she did have to think about it a little differently. After all, now he wasn't just being some jealous oaf. Now he was being a Gang Leader and keeping one of his informants loyal.

Which calmed her down on one front, and upset her more on another. "That's it? That's why you done come in here tellin' me what I can and can't do in my home?" She sounded almost alarmed by that. "You're a right pain in the ass Dooger." She shook her head, "I ain't never needed to be told how to be loyal 'fore this, so what makes ya think I do now?"

She spun on her heel then, turning her back on the man and stalking toward the booze they kept on the main floor. She muttered to herself as she went, "loyal as a damn dog. Damn men, always acting like a woman can't be trusted. Actin' like just 'cause I'm a whore I'm less then them. I ain't less then nobody." She poured herself a shot of whiskey, quickly drinking it up as she tried to organize her thoughts and emotions some. She'd been frazzled by the incident before Donnie showed up, and his appearance didn't seem to be making her feel any better about it.

[boo face to bones not bein' around no more. maybe we should just move on? XD]

True enough, but he was feeling particularly possessive with the news of Bones and his gang sculking around.

He stood up, ignoring the men and whores who were giving them looks.

"Bones ain't as reasonable like I can be. He's a crazy son of a bitch that don't care who gets caught in the crossfire." Pause. "Keep that in mind if he comes by here."

Donnie set his hat back on his head, prepared to leave now that he'd successfully pissed off the madam.

[moving on sounds like a good plan. XD]

Her back still turned to him, she sat the glass down and shook her head a little. She hadn't paid anyone any attention and she didn't have any intention of doing so in that moment either.

When Donnie spoke, she turned her head to look at him. Nodding to acknowledge his warning. Which, while she would never admit it to anyone else, she could admit to herself that it mattered to her that even when they were angry he cared enough to give the warning.

Phoebe watched him put his hat back on, shaking her head again. "I'll let you know if any useful information makes its way here," which was also keep yourself safe, you big oaf, I'd probably miss you.
