Founders' Day Dancing
Who: Stella Cooper and [OPEN]
Where: Founder's Day Festival;
When: Thursday, September 5, 1867; early evening
Status: Incomplete
Summary: With a makeshift dance area set up in the town square, Stella's enjoying herself more than she'd expected.

***

Stella self-consciously adjusted her skirts, only a bit ill at ease in her saloon finery outside of the Heel Kicker itself. She tended to dress more modestly when she ventured out amongst the townspeople on her own time, with higher necklines and full length skirts -- but since she was technically working tonight, she'd had to compromise. Her bodice was cut low enough to draw eyes, but not so low as to raise eyebrows, at least, and her skirts were kilted up to keep her legs free during the dancing.

That would be new, at least -- in addition to a few performance dances, there had been a dance area set up in front of the stage in the town square, and the saloon girls would be expected to draw in a crowd for couples dances once the festivities were underway in earnest. It was something Stella had been looking forward to for weeks -- the chance to dance with a partner, instead of in front of spectators with a half a dozen other dancers, alone but not. She'd already started scanning the passersby in search of her first few victims, the local men that she deemed safe enough to draw into the dancing -- those without wives or serious sweethearts, but who might be encouraged to ask one or two of the young women in town for the next dance. The trick was to start a chain reaction; get one partner to ask another, and another, and another, until the dance floor was full and the laughter drew more people to watch and join in.

The musicians were already tuning up for the first set, and Stella leaned against the corner of the stage, a little apart from the other saloon girls, as she considered her options and tried not to fidget with impatience.

Joaquin wasn't surprised to find a dance starting up. It was a staple to every celebration it seemed. The sounds of the musicians warming up put a hint of a smile on his lips, he had always liked the sound of instruments tuning up for some reason like they were just waking up with creaky voices and grumpy complaints. He smiled at a few people and shook hands with a couple of the men, some asked if he was going to dance but he put of their questions. They knew the truth though, there wasn't a dance that went down that Sheriff Mendoza didn't dance at least once. A strange thing for the normally somber man, they all seemed to remember it.

Spotting Miss Stella Cooper he made his over with a smile. "Miss Stella, looking lovely like always, I see you're lacking in partners for once, if I may, could I have this dance?" he asked extending a hand with a smile.

Stella looked up in mild surprise at the sheriff's approach, and couldn't help but smile as her decision was taken neatly out of her hands. The town sheriff would suit quite nicely, after all -- no jealous wife or sweetheart to worry about, and recognizable enough to get others out on the dance floor, as well. Not to mention it was nice to see the man smiling so easily.

"I'd be delighted, sheriff," Stella agreed lightly, and bobbed an impish little curtsy (somewhat less effective with her skirts kilted up, alas) as she placed her hand in his. "I must admit, I've heard rumors that you're quite a dancer, but I've not had a chance to see for myself," she said with a laugh.

Joaquin laughed shaking his head, "You mustn't listen to rumors Miss Stella. I'm afraid I'll disappoint." He led her out onto the the floor waiting for the music to start up. "Any dancing I do must be entirely blamed on my Spanish blood," he said with a smile, "My father was an awful dancer, but my mother had wings on her feet. She always said it was the Spaniard in her."

As the music started he moved into the steps of the dance with ease. He had surprising grace for a man of his build and the smile that touched his face certainly helped him. When ever they had hit a town with dancing the army officers loved to stand up with the ladies almost more then the ladies loved to kick their heels themselves. Joaquin had learned most of the dances during his time in the army because of that.

"Ah, there's one thing we have in common, then," Stella laughed. "My mother taught me to dance, as well -- my father wasn't particularly helpful in that facet of my education," she added, forcing her voice to stay light. Her father's opinions on her dancing had been considerably less flattering than that, but she tried not to dwell on what was over and done with.

"Are you enjoying the festival so far, then?" Stella asked, tilting her head slightly as he led her easily around the makeshift dance floor.
