RP: Founder's Day Festival
Who: Jed Stover and [Open to anyone/everyone]
Where: Founder's Day Festival
When: September 5, 1867, noon
Status: incomplete
Summary: Let the Founder's Day Celebration begin!

Jed finished adjusting his suspenders as he took the stage in the middle of the town square. Founder's Day was always a fantastic celebration -- second only to the Fourth of July celebration held every year. You celebrate your God, your country, and your town -- which meant that Founder's Day had to be given special notice.

"Welcome everyone," he called out, pulling their attention up to the stage. "I want to welcome you to our Founder's Day celebration. Today we get together and honor those of us who formed Shelby out of this dust and rock, and especially honor those who came back, reforming New Shelby from the destruction before. Now I don't know about you, but I think that this fine town returning from being a ghost town is up for celebration. We want to thank the Heel Kicker for providing drinks and opening their doors this afternoon, I know a couple of ladies from the church have baked a plethora of goods for us to sample and enjoy -- Ms. Donovan, I'm looking at you right now -- and a whole lot of games and prizes to be won. Everyone have a good time, and if my daughter comes around, make sure to give her a good quote," he chuckled. "Have a great time, everyone."

With a wave, he hopped off of the stage.

Ophelia couldn't hide a grin at her father's parting shot -- she had a small notebook hidden away in the pocket of her skirts for just that reason, after all. The Founder's Day Festival was sure to offer plenty of local color for the paper, especially with the baking and horse racing competitions being sponsored by town business owners. She'd already spoken with Eli Donovan and gotten a sneak peak at the impromptu 'course' he'd set up in one of his front pastures for the races, and hoped to catch a few minutes with the winners of the short and long distance races before the end of the day.

That wasn't to say she wasn't looking forward to the dancing later that night -- the Heel Kicker was planning to set up a dance area around the stage for local musicians, and some of the saloon girls would almost certainly be trying to pull the locals into the fun. Ms. Cooper had seemed pleased with the arrangement; it would be a nice change from dancing for other people, she'd said, provided they could pull a few townspeople in once the music started. Ophelia didn't think she'd have too much trouble on that count, but she'd promised to see what she could do to encourage participation, nonetheless.

Still, until the judging on the baked goods and the horse races and the evening's entertainment began, Ophelia had a few hours to herself -- and she intended to make the most of them. The festival wasn't so much a day off for her as an opportunity to multi-task -- she could speak with the townspeople for the paper, help her father keep everything running smoothly, and hopefully have a bit of fun on her own, all at the same time.

With another small smile, Ophelia turned away from the stage, wandering amongst the tables and townspeople as she tried to soak up everything around her at once.
