Out Ridin'
Who: Jessup Greene and OPEN
When: Saturday July 5, 1867; Early Morning
Where: Just on the outskirts of the town, and then heading back into town
Status: Incomplete

Pale pinks, yellows, and oranges could be seen on the horizon as the sun slowly rose. Jessup sat on top of his mount, arms folded and resting on the saddle horn just looking out to the horizon. He tilted his hat back, taking in a deep breath and then let out a soft sigh. I reckon it’s bout time to head back. Not that he really wanted to go back, but he couldn’t let Abelinda open the store by herself now could he? Well, without losing his life that was.

Straightening himself in the saddle he turned his horse, and with one last look at the horizon he squeezed his legs to urge his mount forward. Jessup would’ve preferred going on a little bit further, staying out a little bit longer but he could always go out riding again later that evening if they closed the shop early, which was the case on most Saturdays. Business seemed to slow down a little bit after lunch, and the family did need time to spend together because Abelinda took the children to church on Sunday while Jessup slept in.

He smiled softly wondering if he should accompany his wife to church, just to throw her off a little bit. He’d do it someday, not that weekend. He was bone tired from working that week, not only in the shop but piddling around and fixing little things that needed to be done for the shop. Letting loose on one of the reins he fixed his hat as his horse plodded along.

There was always something so peaceful about taking a ride, and Jessup missed riding. Not that he wanted to go on horseback for days on in, sleeping in his saddle, or on the hard ground. He was quite content with his life now, and that was all that mattered to him.

Finally he hit the road into town, letting his horse take his time. Jessup wasn’t in any rush, he never was. He could see the buildings in the early morning light, and took another deep breath. Life was good indeed.

It was fairly early in the morning on Saturday when Helene decided to mount on her horse, Florence, Flo, for short. She had some time to go for a ride before she headed into town for work. She wondered if most of her Bank co-workers were enjoying their sleep in. Many of them did not like the idea of working on Saturdays. But surely, what is the harm in a few hours? They only worked in the morning, and Helene did not mind helping Mister Whiteley out.

She was desperate to watch the sunrise while riding Flo, it had been sometime since she had spent quality time with her horse, with numerous things going on in her life she thought to take a break from it all, just for a few hours. Her brother would not even know she was gone.

Sitting on Flo, she was ready for her ride and motioned Flo to start off slow while still near home then once that was past her she allowed Flo to gallop. She had let her hair down and enjoyed the cool breeze blowing her hair back. Helene and Flo finally reached the outskirts of town, perfect place to watch the sun rise over New Shelby.

"Woah, slow down now, Flo." She whispered into her horses ear as she spotted a man taking her usual place. Well, it was not her place, she had not spent time there for awhile. In fact, it had been far too long. Flo slowed her paced down and Helene watched the man on his horse for awhile, before motioning Flo to carefully approach him.

Jessup turned his head slightly as he heard the approach of hoofs. He pulled back softly on the reins of his mount, a horse that had never known any name except ‘horsy’ by his children. Rangers never named their horses, since if food became scarce they would be eating something they had grown fond of.

He turned in his saddle, glancing back at the young lady approaching him. “Howdy.” He called, eyes narrowing slightly as he peered at her to see if he recognized her. He pulled his mount to a stop, turning the horse slightly. His mount snorted softly, tossing his head before Jessup patted his neck. “Easy now.” He glanced back over at the approaching lady, and tipped his hat. “Morin’ Miss.” He recognized her from the bank, the few times that he’d been in there himself to make small deposits. Not that he trusted banks by any means.

Most of their money was kept in their small apartment, not that anyone other than himself and Abelinda knew that. He waited for a moment, glancing back at the rising sun. It sure was going to be a pretty day, hot and humid from the rain the day before. He’d have to get his wife and go riding maybe after church, or later that evening if they could find someone to watch the children.

Helene had a habit of naming her animals, she knew Florence was safe from any wrong doing unless it was complete necessary. No one was allowed near her apart from Helene.

When the blonde hair man turned around she gave him a friendly smile, Flo started stirring so she tried to calm her down, Helene guessed Flo was not used to horses she did not know. "Morning... Sir." She nodded then tilted her head, the man was familiar, she tried to pin point where she had seen him before, but no matter how hard she tried she could not put a name to his face.

Feeling slightly awkward about asking his name, she looked over to see how pretty New Shelby looked at the time of the morning then looked back to the man on his horse "Beautiful sight, isn't it?"

Jessup watched her horse carefully, still patting his on the neck just to keep the gelding at ease. He smiled softly at her as she greeted him and then followed her gaze over to the town. A warm pride settled in his heart at the sight of it and he nodded, “It surely is.” He agreed, turning to look back at her.

“I don’t reckon we’ve been formally introduced. I’m Jessup Greene, my wife and I run the barber shop.” Once again he inclined his head to her, not terribly shy about asking for a name or introducing himself. “I think I’ve seen you around the town and at the bank, if my memory serves me correct.” He thought for a moment, and then lifted a shoulder. “I would also offer to shake yer hand, but I don’t think our horses would let us get that close.” He smiled, patting his gelding one more time on the neck before he leaned back a little and rested his hands on the saddle horn.
