the discomfort of insomnia.
Who: Theo Ellwood & Mattie Ford - OPEN
When: June 28, 1867 - 4:00 am
Where: Sitting outside of the Inn.
Status: Incomplete.

Insomnia: an issue that has plagued Theo for years now, has once again made an appearance and has been taunting him all night. He was restless, unable to close his eyes without them opening almost instantly there after. Before he even hit the sack, he knew he was tired. His eyelids begged for him to just lie down so that they could rest, but once his head hit the pillow, all hell broke loose. Counting the numerous times he tossed and turned would exceed how many fingers and toes he had. The moonlight was the first to be blamed. Theo could only sleep when it was pitch black, unless he was excessively exhausted or too drunk to even care. The curtains where not thick enough to mask the glow seeping into the room, and even when he achieved to exhale the light by hanging up a piece of clothing over each window, he still could not sleep.

Perhaps it was because he was thinking too much. Thinking about the last thing he told Helene, the last time he was in present company with Lilah and James, and the last brother he has yet to see. But also that one woman whom he had once fallen deeply in love with and how he fucked it up by acting like a complete moron towards her and basically pushing her away with his actions. He vowed, the day after, that he would never - or at least try - be that way again. Even if it was too late.

Despite the fact that his body was aching to be replenished with a good night's sleep, his mind could not stop exercising. Slowly but surely Theo rose from the bed and replaced his shirt, leaving it untucked. He slipped on his boots and grabbed a quirley and a match or two (just in case something happened to the first). He rubbed his face with a free hand with annoyance. Sleeping at this moment sounded like the greatest of joys and all he wanted to do was relish in that joy by closing his eyes and drifting off into whatever it was he would dream about. But now the only thing he was going to do was walk downstairs, sit outside, and smoke his damn cigarette.

Theo shut the door to his room after exiting and passed the two other doors before heading down the stairs and making his way outside. The moonlight crept from beneath the roof, mocking him. He simply shook his head, lit the match and pressed the flame to the smoke that hung from his lips. He shook out the lit match, tossed it aside, then took a seat on the top step connected to the porch. Very few were still out, but he wondered if any of them were having the same problem he was so unappreciatively experiencing.

Though it wasn't exactly insomnia that had Mattie up this late at night, there was something to be said about anyone who was up and about at this hour who wasn't a farmer of some kind. And in any case, the dead of night seemed to be the best time to make deliveries, and move stuff around to make more room where she kept most of her booze hidden. Tonight seemed to be one of those nights where Mattie was coming across the road after having just dropped off a rather large jug full of something or other, probably moonshine. In return she'd received the empty jar that had contained the remnants of her last shipment over there.

So she walked, carrying the large empty jar across the way, figuring no one was out and about at this time, and if there were, it wouldn't be anyone who was going to give her trouble. She really hoped not, anyway. Save the trouble for later on when she was a bit more coherent. All she wanted to do was get into her bed and sleep, but she didn't think her job would be that merciful. She still had a lot of things to do before she could ever crawl into her bed. The jar was kind of heavy, but not so much that she couldn't hold it, it just sort of dragged in front of her.

It was the light from his cigarette that drew her attention in that general direction and she paused, coming to a stop in front of the Inn. She couldn't quite make out who it was exactly, or even if she knew the person, but she figured it was probably a good idea to act like she wasn't doing anything wrong. She set the jar down with a huff and sighed. Stupid thing. If she hadn't been so concerned about saving bottles lately then she would've told the old guy to shove it up his you know what. Instead she was lugging this thing around and hoping that whoever it was on the porch wasn't anyone who was going to get her put into jail.

During this time that Theo felt that his brain was slowly going to excuse itself from his head, another living soul wandered across the road. Of course, he did not see this person from afar, and even if he did, he would not have known whether or not insomnia - like he - was the cause.

Instead, he kept himself seated on the wooden step which was too hard to even try and pretend that it was his bed. He could hear in separate distances a cricket chirping here and there; the noise was almost soothing to him, but still blocked by the thought of how he wasn't actually asleep at this hour in the morning. Soon the moon would tuck it self into the darkened space and leave the sky to the sun. But that was mere hours away, and he hoped that by that time he would have at least been able to shut his eyes for 5 minutes.

Just as he decided to look up while taking a drag from his smoke, a woman came into view carrying a large (and perhaps heavy, from what it looked like) jug. She stopped after a moments passed and clunked it down on the road just feet from where Theo sat.

"Need help?" he said calmly as if he already knew her, in which, he did not. Nor has he seen her face around here before.

Though Mattie didn't have much of a sense of humor most of the time, she had the urge to look around and ask him if he was talking to her. Which of course, he was since there didn't seem to be anyone else around. She bit down the urge to do so, and shrugged one of her shoulders. It was hard to tell who to trust not to ask questions about what a woman was doing at 4 o'clock lugging this thing around, because let's face it, her behavior was probably suspicious. Yet asking the guy not to ask questions might make him want to ask them even more.

In any case, as she thought about these things, somewhere she realized that she thought too much, and thus was probably just sitting there and having him think she was mute or something. She stared in his general direction, though it was dark and gave a shrug of both of her shoulder, "If you're volunteering, I ain't gonna say no. This thing's heavier then a shit ton of bricks.." she finally answered with a little bit of a sigh and pushed her hair back from her face.

Maybe by the time he actually came down there to help her, she'd think of some excuse to be carrying this thing around so late at night. Usually she was good with excuses, but it was late, and she was kind of cranky, so who knew what was going to come out of her mouth.

Although to him it seemed like a century for the time it took for her to answer, perhaps the mistake was on his part. He did, in fact, speak very quietly this once. Theo opened his mouth only to close it again. Open. Close. An eyebrow quirked upon his face as he tilted his head and glanced up at the sky. Maybe she was ignoring him and didn't need help from some stranger. Of course, these thoughts simply vanished when the woman returned his question with somewhat of a straight-forward answer.

He wasn't necessarily volunteering; if she needed his help, then he'd be damned if he didn't get his ass up and do it. Without further adieu, the man slowly climbed to his feet, finished his cigarette, then flicked it aside. It did not matter to him that he was only half-dressed and perhaps looked like hell. It wasn't planned that he was going to help someone out this morning.

"Right then," he said, placing his hands on his hips first before getting ready to lug this thing to wherever it was she needed it, "Firstly, whatever this is, don't matter to me. Bad. Good. Whatever. You gotta do what you gotta do."

Theo reached down with either hand and hauled it upwards just enough so that he could rest it on his shoulder. "Second, lead the way 'cause I have no damn clue where you were headed." He smiled, looking over at her while readjusting the heavy load to his shoulder's comfort.

If she noticed or cared about him looking ragged, it didn't pass over her face. Though somewhere she could imagine some girly girl chastising him for running about like that, but it was four in the morning and really that gave anyone an excuse to go around half dressed and looking like the cat dragged them in. "Thanks," she muttered as he came over and she got up off the bottle and let him pick it up. She said it not only in thanks for his help, but for him not asking any questions either. "Just as well, don't want you gettin into trouble," she said afterwards with a smirk.

"Oh right.. this way.." she motioned down the way and then started to walk with him, just a little ahead so he didn't have to figure out where she was going before she actually went there. Her place wasn't too far down the way, and the barn was closer then the house.

Near the barn there were a bunch of other bottles, a whole collection of them really all surrounding the doors to the barn, and some inside. She kind of gestured towards the group, "You can just set it wherever, I gotta ... take em all.. well, make sure they're hid before sunrise.." at least it wasn't going to be too far.

The things Theo could have told her about all of the trouble he has put himself into his entire life simply sat in his head. He wasn't going to blurt out the fact he was wanted in Oregon for bank robbery and manslaughter. But, yes, he did not want to get into trouble here. It was his home and the home of his family. Leaving them all over again would indeed make him the biggest of jackasses. Ever.

Soon enough, the woman put one foot forward and lead the way. It was a short walk, yet the silence between them made it seem like it was a hell of a lot longer. He would have said more, but what do you say to a girl while carrying her so-called luggage?

The two reached the barn. She motioned to the other similar bottles all while mentioning what she was doing with them; which, in place, answered the question burning in Theo's brain: What the hell was she doing up this early carrying this damn thing?

He set the object down and began to knead his fingers into his shoulder for a moment, "I'm sure you can accomplish that... Somehow..." he said, turning to face her. "Haven't seen you 'round here before."

Still, he did not introduce himself. Not that he didn't want to. He just simply... Forgot.

The questions were written on his face, but she never knew what to say to someone who wasn't a customer. If you were a friend of a friend and said they sent you, that was just as well in her book. It had worked out okay so far, none of her stuff had gone confiscated and she hadn't been hauled off to jail, which made her in her eyes on top of things. "Thanks," she told him again once he'd set the bottle down, just to be on the safe side.

"Yeah I reckon so, got a few more hours left till the sun comes up and people start wandering around.." she said with a sigh. It was easier to see him now that he was looking her and closer and they hadn't been walking.

Her shoulder shrugged a bit, "I've been here.. guess it's cause I'm usually out at night and the people usually come to me during the day, not the other way around. I'm not too good around.." she trailed off, thinking. "Well.. anyone I guess. People in general," she finished after a moment.

Then her eyebrow went up, "Ain't like I've seen you around here before either." She paused. "You a drinkin man?" her arms folded on top of her chest as she asked.

Sure, Theo was curious as to what really sat inside of each jug and had she been so ignorant as to tell him right away, he wouldn't have run off to tell the Sheriff like some little brat tattle-tale. He was already in trouble by the law in another location, and he wasn't a hypocrite.

But, he kept his questions and comments to himself. Had she wanted him to know, she would have already told him.

"So you're a... Bootlegger?" It was more of a statement, really; a rhetorical question if you will. "Hm, well, you can trust me not to let any of them know about it. You. This. That.." He shifted his eyes, "Well, you get m'point."

He folded his arms and shifted his gaze until she asked him if he was a drinker. Theo merely wanted to laugh and reply with a, 'Are you serious?' But instead...

"Yeah. I mean, yes, I'm drinkin' man."

The question made her grin slightly, the corners of her mouth turning upwards. The word always just made her laugh, she didn't know why. Guess it was just a funny word. Instead of actually answering the question, she gave a curt nod of her head, "Good.. wouldn't want to have to kill you for tellin," she said complete with a wink of her eye.

Her sense of humor was a little off most of the time apparently.

Instead of him laughing, she laughed at the look on his face. Her manners were a little off too. She turned a bit and gestured for him to follow. "What's your poison then?" she asked over her shoulder as she reached behind a stack of something and threw and pressed something that made a tiny little indent in the ground where there hadn't been before. Unless you were looking for it, most people had no idea it was there.

"I got moonshine, absinthe, whiskey and rum. Special rum."

He had helped her, it was the least she could do. Besides, it was good for business to get people to want more.

The set of moods between the two made the air lighter; well, at least in Theo's eyes, it did. Had she not of laughed, let alone joked around, it would have been extremely awkward. Knowing him, he would have either done something stupid, or said something stupid. Or, with his luck, both. He liked her sarcasm.

But once she started her business, his eyes lit up with a grin from ear to ear. A woman bootlegger selling alcohol in secret only made him hope that this would make him a good acquaintance, and vise versa.

"Since I'm already in good terms with both whiskey and rum, I do miss my good friend, Shine," he said, walking over to where she had placed herself. A while back he already took that dip into the absinthe pool. Special Rum, however, was new to him.

"And I suppose I can try this special rum that you speak of," he nodded, then stopped and cocked his head with a quizzical look, "What the hell's so special about it, anyways?"

"Then Shine it shall be," she said with a grin, heading down inside the little passageway. "I don't let just anyone get down here but y'helped me out," she told him, grinning a bit. It always made her happy when she was able to get a new customer.

It wasn't too far down into the 'basement' of sorts before she was finding another switch and pulling back another door. Inside was a bunch of buckets, bottles, and all sorts of contraptions that mixed, extracted and probably a whole bunch of other stuff.

Mattie turned her head to look back at him, "I made it, that's what's so special," she said smugly. She headed over to one of the stills and grabbed one of the bottles that was the size of a flask and then dipped it in, filling it up and handed it over. "It's a secret, and you may be a pretty face, but I ain't giving it away. You can taste for yourself.."

That's when she headed over to the barrel, grabbed a glass off the shelf and poured some in and handed that over too.

As she began to walk away, he stepped forth, following her although she did not ask for it. Oh well. He'd already seen the large stock she had, what's the harm in seeing the rest? It was far more interesting walking at her heels while his eyes gathered in the surroundings rather than sitting in front of the Inn doing nothing at all.

Everything around the two had its own special purpose. He wasn't going to ask what each and every thing did, nor did he really care. But tasting what these things produced was what he wanted the most; and she was going to give it to him.

He watched as she filled a flask-sized bottle, then handed it to him. "I guess that's enough to call it special," he said in reply to her special rum. "Well if the secret is only yours then I'm not going to pry. I'm not here to steal anythin' or... Crap like that." He waved his free hand, but only for a moment before a glass was shoved into it.

The bottle, he imagined, was to keep. The glass, to drink now. It was obvious of course but still took Theo a short while to figure it out. Maybe he was tired after all. With a nod, he tipped the glass back, his lower lip cupping the outside of the rim while the other stood open so that the liquid would slide down more easily.

The major sting, burn, and even itch of the moonshine clawed at his throat and chest before slowly slithering down into its place. He cringed (and was never able not to, drinking this stuff), closed his eyes and wiggled his head before letting out a deep breath. "Wow. Very n," he coughed, "Shit. Nice."

If she had protested him following her down, she probably would have told him to stay put. Not everyone knew where this place was, but then it again it was four in the morning and not everyone could see their way in the mostly dark as she could through her own barn. "Yeah, that's enough to call it special, you'll see.." she certainly was smug about it. It was the only thing she knew how to do really.

The corner of her lip twitched up again, "If you were stealin I doubt you'd get very far. I'm stronger then I look.." Most people who decided to steal from her got a swift kick between their legs if not more. She wasn't above hitting someone over the head with a bottle.

She watched as he drank what she gave him, this time not actually smirking but seemingly pleased with herself that he thought it was good. "There's more of that when y'need it.. since you already know where I am.. I mean if y'want more.. when y'want more.." she leaned up against the still. "I'm Mattie by the way.."

"I don't doubt your strength," he said (before downing the shine) with raised brows. If there was one good way to make a man go down, then it was a kick to the nuts. Which in the past has happened at least once or twice to Theo.

After drinking the alcohol, he handed the glass over, nodding his head in approval and smacking his lips as though he had just tasted the finest of food or beverage. "I won't need it all that often, but if and when I do, I'll know where to go. Secretly or.. Hide.. ing.. ly. Shit that's not even a word." He waved a hand, "You know what I mean."

If it were unusual for Theo to be making a fool of himself in front of new company, then he'd be surprised. However, it was normal.

"Mattie. I'm Theo," he said, throwing out his hand.

Taking the glass back from him and smiled, "Yeah? Good.. I'm always glad to get new customers.." she said, nodding her head. "Quite sure half the words we use aren't actually words. People are always makin up new ones."

She couldn't help but grin slightly at him, but if she was actually laughing at him remained to be seen. After all, she wasn't that good with people. That didn't mean she had to be rude or anything.

Mattie put her hand in his and gave it a nice firm shake, "Nice to meet you Theo.." thanking god he wasn't any sort of gentleman that would make her curtsy or any of that nonsense.

A firm handshake from a woman was much more of a plus to him than anyone would have thought. He did not always offer his hand to a lady, but he had already known that Mattie would have wiggled an eyebrow if he asked for her to bow. If he were not offering his hand, like mentioned, then it was polite enough for him to take the woman's and kiss their knuckles.

With a small smile placing itself firmly on his face, he shook back, then let go and folded his arms across his chest (the bottle still in hand). He then found a place to lean back upon, the alcohol slowly beginning to kick in, however, not marking him "drunk." It was one of the finest bits of moonshine he had ever had. In fact, he could not even really remember the last time he had consumed it. Whether it be in Nevada or Oregon, he couldn't put a finger on either of the two.

"Pleasure to meet you as well," he said, wiggling his nose from a slight itch, "And... Uh, well is there anything else I could help you with?"

If there was not, he wasn't sure whether or not he should leave her to the rest of her work before the sun would rise. If there was, then he'd offer his services to her before she shooed him out.

Though she .. mostly looked and dressed like a woman, that was about as girly as she got. It was probably true that no one had ever kissed her knuckles not ever, and bowing probably had only happened once in her life if that. She was definitely not good at it in the slightest. And they both looked much better off for having shook hands then anything else, she definitely looked a bit relieved.

"Ah well.." she answered, nodding her head towards the direction they'd come in from. "If you wanna help me shove all the bottles inside the door, I won't say no to that either, but I can manage.." if she actually trusted someone she'd probably hire someone to help her.

But she didn't.

So Mattie gestured, "It's up to you, I won't take no offense if you wanna go.. though it didn't look like you were doin much sleepin in the first place."

Once she had spoken of the fact that she did need the help, his brows raised. He wanted to help, and that was a rarity. It was just that if he left now, he would probably have been bored the rest of the day. Although, there might have been a good game of cards going on at the Heel Kicker. But it was still way early in the morning to be playing a bunch of drunks. He wanted the fresh ones.

Then when she spoke of him looking tired, his brows went right back down. He frowned, lowering his gaze and shaking his head from side to side as if in thought. "Yeah, two days and very little sleep. Too much on m'mind."

"If you can really manage getting those things in, then I'll leave you to it. But be honest now and tell me if you really need the help." He used his free hand for gesturing. He tended to use his hands a lot when he spoke (as most do). Now he stood there, looking at her... Blinking... His eyebrows shooting right back up.

"Seriously though. I don't mind helping. Otherwise I would have ran out like I was being chased by a pack of angry cowboys," he nodded a bit, then said, "Or something to that effect."

Both of her shoulders raised up in a shrug, "Maybe you should just try sleepin during the day and stay up at night. Dunno what all the fuss is about being awake during the day anyway. Just a bunch of people running around, yapping at each other. Boring if you ask me. I'd rather be awake now. But I guess you can just take sleep where you can get it.."

Licking her lips, she started up out of the still since they were done there and headed back to the top of the barn, closing the trap doors behind her when he followed. She grinned again at all his gesturing since he seemed to gesture as much as she rambled on.

"Well yeah I can manage, I manage every other night puttin them in here.. but you helpin just means I'll get done in a couple of minutes instead of a couple of hours.." she looked over at the bottles and then back at him. "But then it ain't like I'm gonna be doin much. Waiting for customers I guess.." she slid her hands in her apron pocket and sighed. Stupid dress. What she wouldn't give to be able to wear pants like a boy.

Mattie laughed outright and shook her head, "I ain't had a pack of angry cowboys in here in weeks," she said half teasingly. "Well come on then if you wanna help.. you're a regular ol knight in shining.. moonshine.."

Well, she sure was a talker. Not that it was a bad thing. Theo could do nothing but blink without response; there was none to be given. Once done, she walked out and he followed, letting her close the various "secret" doors and such to hide away her still.

"Right. Customers. Minutes as opposed to hours. Well I don't want to leave knowing that while I'm in bed you're moving around every jug known to man in here." In other words, he's going to help. He looked at her, then back to the bottles and independently began to move them.

"Moonshine, huh? Now I can't really imagine myself naked covered in moonshine that was actually shiny whilst holding sword," he said, stopping to ponder, "Nope, can't see it."

He turned to look at her with a grin then shrugged and continued on.

"How very generous of you.." she murmured as she started to lift up bottles and bring them inside the door, just putting them any old way. She didn't really have a system or anything, she just had to make sure that she could close the door, that was all she really cared about.

When he brought up the being covered naked in moonshine, she stopped, and stood up straight, glancing over at him and then smirked right back. "I think it's the holding a sword part y'prolly got wrong. Maybe if knights had guns or somethin.." she laughed.

Then it was back to actually putting things inside and actually not running her mouth for once. She didn't mean to carry on that way, especially for someone who didn't usually like people. "Or.." she said after a minute, "maybe you just gotta be up on a horse.."

"I do have a horse, but he ain't white. Doesn't he have to be white?" he questioned, stopping only to look at her with furrowed brows. He then shrugged and continued moving the bottles from the doorway. "I dunno, whenever I hear that phrase I think of some man on a white horse with all that crap on him."

The bottles were being moved effortlessly, but slowly. Not too slowly, just not quick enough. But that didn't matter. It was better than leaving her to do all of the work.

"I suppose though I could get on my black horse, guns in hands and pour moonshine on me while galloping down the road looking for a damsel in distress. Not sure if any girl would want some naked man smelling of alcohol to save them," he muttered with a shrug. Theo didn't even realize just how much he had been rambling on; much like she.

"I thought it was Death that had a white horse, not a knight. I think knight's just have shining horses? No wait, that's armor.. I dunno.." she shrugged her shoulders at him. "As long as y'got a horse.. with or without crap, guess that counts.. though I wouldn't know anything about being a damsel in distress, even if.. I suppose I am. In distress. Not a damsel."

Anything was better then her doing all the work, and she didn't seem to protest at the pace they were going. She didn't work much harder herself, or faster at any rate.

Mattie laughed, "Well I'm sure some women find that whole.. smelling like booze thing attractive. I dunno, most of the time it's hard to find a guy who doesn't smell like it anyways, with or without the attractive part.. Guess I'd rather be covered in moonshine naked then put on a big old huge thing of armor though."

This was almost the weirdest conversation she'd ever had.

He stopped and slowly turned towards her with blinking eyes. "Death rides a white horse? Well, shit. Maybe he stole it from the knight after taking his soul. Or whatever it is that Death does," he said with a shrug as he scooted over the next bottle, "Or it's the knight in disguise. Yeah, I have no idea what I'm saying."

Taking a small break would probably be a good idea, even if for a minute or two. He didn't have tons of energy as he should, seeing as he didn't get the sleep to build it up.

"You're right. Abso-fucking-lutely right. Most women love that 'You smell like alcohol so I'm going to seduce you because you're probably drunk' thing. Maybe not women, but whores do. Not that I'm saying whores aren't women. Or I mean, women aren't whores."

Indeed, what an odd sort of conversation the two were having. But at least they were talking and not remaining silent, which would have been just as strange. It was sort of refreshing to find someone to babble on to without the worry of making sense.

"Uhh..." she stopped and thought for a minute, nose scrunching up in thought. "Pale horse? I mean.. pale.. white, same thing right? I mean it's not like you see a pale.. black horse or something.. at least I've never seen one. It wouldn't be pale black, it'd just be grey.." Semantics about the colors of horses, that was an interesting topic. "Maybe he stole it from King Arthur, he probably had a white horse.. though why Death would want his horse is beyond me. You'd think he'd have some kind of.. horse that was all on fire or .. I dunno, a dead one.."

Those questions were probably going to keep her up at night. They were almost done though with all the bottles, which was good, she was getting tired, and she'd only done half the work this time.

She cracked up this time, doubling over a little for no other reason then she thought the comparison between women and whores was hilarious. That and having them all soaked in alcohol. "Can't say I've ever been a whore.." she paused, "Well.. guess that's not true, I think every woman has at some point, but not.. officially. And I'm definitely not a woman.. I mean I got all the parts of a woman, but that don't make me one. Both of those must be the reason that it ain't so appealing."

She paused, "Actually... it's probably because I already smell like alcohol? So.. I don't really smell it on other people.." she said, like the answer had just dawned on her a second ago, which it had. She'd never thought about it like that before. "Guess that makes it easy with all the seducin that's supposed to be going on."

"Ah! Pale black does make it gray. But I can see Death riding a dead horse. A dead gray horse. With a matted mane and tail. And that's it," he said, throwing his hands up before finishing up with the last few bottles. "Damn, that went by pretty quick, I must say. Nonsense conversations make the time fly." He looked at her and nodded matter-of-factly.

He leaned over and placed his elbow up against the frame of the door, propping himself upright as he rested his head into the palm of his hand. "I wouldn't say every woman, but I dunno. I haven't started a poll or anything to really find out. You, m'dear, are a female. I can see what you're tryin' t'say about yourself. There is something though that I can see to confirm the fact that you are a woman. Beauty."

Great. Was Theo flirting? Probably not. He was only being honest. It just all depended on how she took it. "You don't really have to be girly to be a real woman. But for you, it's there. Just sort of... Hiding." He smiled, resting his other hand on his hip.

"As for the whole alcohol thing," he started, removing his hand from his hip to wave it around before replacing it, "It's not that bad. Just for when you're out and about and some drunk bastard thinks you're the drunk bastard and wants to get in your pants." Theo paused, tapped his chin then finished with, "But like you said, you're stronger than you look."

Mattie put the last bottle down and looked around. "Huh. You're right.." she hadn't even been paying attention really. "That did go by really quick.. I'm highly impressed. Maybe that means I should start talking nonsense to myself when I'm bored and putting this stuff away at night.." it sounded like a decent solution, even if it was a little bit odd.

She wiped her hands off in front of her on her apron and snorted, "Beauty? Here I thought it was just having tits and a vagina.. but if you say so. Most of the time guys just see me as... one of the guys I guess. But then usually all I hang around with are guys.. girls don't usually come around to see me.. we don't get along all that well. Actually I don't get along with anyone that well, but guess that's gotta change sometime.." she trailed off. Especially if she was going to get that job where she was going to have to serve other people.

"I don't mind really.. either way. Either they're drunk or I'm drunk.. and usually I am the drunk.. y'know.. when I'm not working. They say don't ever drink your own merchandise.. besides.. it's just sex.. ain't like I'm ever getting married again.. once was enough." Her nose wrinkled.

Theo shifted but kept his position against the doorway, shaking his head. Another one of those who do not think they have an ounce of good looks even when someone tells them they do right to their face. He sighed, looking away and twisting his mouth in thought.

"It's not just having tits and a vagina, it's much more than that and if anyone tells you otherwise then... They're wrong." He cocked his head forward and looked at her with a stiff stare, hoping that his words sink in just a little. "Though I guess I can see why you're objecting to it."

With a huff, he pushed himself away from the frame and let his arms hang at his sides. "Just sex. Yeah I guess that it is. Casual, innocent, se... Wait, married again? What happened with that? I mean, if you don't mind me asking, which I just did, so I should have said if you don't mind answering." His words trailed off, but his attention shot right back up to her.

It wasn't that she thought she wasn't good looking, she just didn't see the point in even thinking about it. There were lots of other reasons she didn't particularly like being a girl, "I just think everyone should be all.. equal.. or something. I dunno.. Maybe I just know too many girls who go around trying to use all their.. pretty faces for getting lots of stuff.. it just seems silly.." she waved her hand a little dismissively. "I don't mind being a woman.. I just mind most of the stuff that comes with it.. or what people think should come with it.." something like that.

Mattie blinked a little, "Oh that? I.. he.. he's dead.. he was an old bugger.. got scarlet fever a couple of years ago. Though I was just a kid when I got married.. I wasn't.. raised around these parts.. Didn't want to get married, but I couldn't stay with the tribe anymore.. or my sister's husband.." she rubbed the back of her neck.

Well, that wasn't the answer he wanted to hear, clearly. But it was too late to turn back now, he had already asked and she had already answered. "Dead. Scarlet. I'm sorry to hear that, Mattie," he said, chewing on the inside of his cheek as he lowered his gaze in thought. In what way can he turn the conversation around. Even considering that the talk didn't look like it bothered her that much, death wasn't something you talk about casually.

"Sorry to have brought that up, then. I guess I could say it's good that you're here. Would have never of met you had you stayed wherever it was you were before," he nodded and looked at her for some sort of approval.

From the looks of their surroundings, the sun was slowly beginning to show itself just above the horizon. The tip of the burning ball was just visible, barely lighting up the town but enough so that it was easier to see. Theo turned to gaze outside then looked back at Mattie. "Maybe I should, uh, leave you to your future sales? That and... I should at least try to be getting some sort of sleep."

Both of her shoulders shrugged a bit, "It's all right.. better off on my own.." and she truly believed that. "Guess you're right.. I was sent to live with one of the Indian tribes when I was younger.. well.. way younger, I don't really know my parents.. or remember them.. but they were my family in all the ways that counted. But I'm glad to be here.. glad to be doing what I'm doing.. even if it's.. on the illegal side." she smiled a bit.

Oh right, it was almost morning, "Here I am rambling on and on and keeping you from sleep.. yeah.. maybe I should get a couple of hours in before I go.. make the rounds.." she nodded her head. "It was nice meeting you.. and thanks again for the help. Whenever you want more, come on back.. not being legal helps where I don't have a closing time.. my door's always open."

As Theo stretched and yawned, he respectively listened to her short story about part of her life. At least she still had some sort of family that looked after her. He did have his family, but... That was a whole different story. "Well, I'm happy you agree, Mattie," he said, letting out a long sigh, "And yes, I should get going. Uh, even though I already said that."

He reached over and took the bottle she had given him, not too large to be able to hide on his way home. Even if he was wearing only his shirt. No one would question at this time in the morning anyways; or at least they shouldn't.

"Yes. I mean, it was nice meeting you as well. I'm sure we'll run into each other again, somehow." Theo waved a hand, took one last look, then turned and headed back to the inn.
